Forget the Scouring...

The issue with Unification Wars stuff is that it's just not as iconic as the Horus Heresy. The primarchs aren't around, and the Legions aren't really the same Legions that everyone already knows, it's too niche. Not saying it couldn't be done well, just saying that a.) BL wants to appeal more to the "average 40k fan" and b.) They want to slowly move the overarching plot forward, not back

Give it time for the madness and obsession to begin. The Unification Wars will be to the Horus Heresy, what the Horus Heresy was to the 41st Millennium for decades. A series of myths and legends of epic wars and climatic endings to entire civilizations, spoken of with awe by we who were not there.

The FW team have the cash cow of the HH and the Scouring for now. It will end one day, though, and they'll begin looking for a new project.

We just need to be there to point them in the right direction.

Honestly I'm much more interested in the Great Crusade itself.

When I read Horus Rising, it was like I was seeing the setting for the first time. The idea of humanity scattered across the galaxy and the Legions bringing them all into compliance... that was just so cool, and I'd never really given it much thought. One of my only problems with the Heresy craze isn't so much that it's a foregone conclusion, but more that since we all know it's destined it just happens immediately. If we had as much fluff about the Crusade when all the Primarchs were loyal as we do about the Heresy and its spiraling betrayals, I think both would complement and feel more tragic.

Forget the Great Crusade, give me the Scouring Era. I want to experience and read through the darkest time in the Imperium still teetering on the edge of distruction, where traitor and loyalist are scavanging like dogs for anything they can to murder one another in a fruitless war of annihilation. I want that desperation and despair the likes of which the Horus Heresy will never be able to completely experience.

This. The Imperium is dead. Those who could revive it, for better or for worse, are dead. All that is left is to scramble over the corpse.

But I would never be able to decide what I would most like to read. Thunder Regiments marching on the horrors that reigned over the many sovereign states of Old Earth. War Hounds marching, mercilessly clean of the Nails' bite. The sons of Ultramar, still unused to the wearing of colors that will last them millennia.

Heresy.

Roboute Guilliman will lead the Imperium from the brink into another age of dominance. Until he cuts his neck shaving.

You forget your history, brother.

That's why I want it all.

I'd run thunder warriors as Tactical Marines without the Legion Astartes rules, and maybe drop a point or two in their statline. Or maybe even take a Marine Tactical Squad and just give them Guardsman Stats....

Tricky...

But hey, if anyone in the UK wants to do a Unification Book, I'm down for helping with that! :D Get a map of Old Earth, and write up army lists for the various nation states - like the techno geniuses the Salamanders fought before being Salamanders, or Cardinal Tang's forces in the Yndonesic Bloc, or the armies of Ursh, or the Nord Afrik Conclaves, or the forces of Hy Brasil, or the inhabitants of the wastes of Merica, or the kingdom in the Marinara Gorge, etc etc

Make Custodes Guardsmen? Nah. Maybe give them extra WS for their spears, make them a little bit more expensive and maybe make them a 10-man squad max. For weapon options, I think I'd stick with CCWs and Assault weapons. For rules, gibe them something to make them useful as bodyguards and able to get into CC with no problem. But I think I'd leave their saves equal to Astartes.

If we’re going to read about Unification we’re damn right going to read it from the viewpoints of those fighting against the Big E who was just another tyrant back then. I mean this will be a chance to see through the papyrus gloss and glamour and see what a monster the Emperor had to be to win Earth, not to mention give us an opportunity to squeeze our eyes really hard and project it into what things would be like in the 60th millennium. Cycle of good & evil, ‘heroes of today become the monsters of tomorrow’ and all that.
