Recommend a Bolter action book?

Brothers of the Snake, by Dan Abnett. Or the Night Lords Trilogy by ADB (although describing them as mere action stories is actually an immense disservice).

Alternatively there's the Heresy series, of course.

Edit: There's also the Space Marine Battle series. Helsreach by ADB and Battle of the Fang by Chris Wraight are probably the best ones I've read so far.

Night Lords are a far cry from bolter porn.

True. However, ADB also writes highly evocative action scenes, and his writing style is so easy to read (which I mean as a compliment) that even in an 'action story' list, I think they're worth suggesting.

In that context, the fact that they're amongst the very best work in the whole Black Library is just another bonus, in my opinion msn-wink.gif

Pretty much any space marine novel can be included under the bolter porn category.  Personal i've always liked the Ragnar Blackmane series or you could try Blood Gorgons, Blood of Asaheim, Angels of Death Short Story collection and Ian Watson's Space Marine.

I would recommend that you avoid Nick Kyme's Salamander series although the Marines Malevolent do feature in the first novel.

Rynn's World. Tons of dakka, plus the awesomeness that is Captain Coteaz running amok through Ork lines can never be discounted.

Yeah, this.  The plot's about as uncomplicated as possible, basically devolving to "Shoot ork in face, reload."  Still a good book though.

Well, I really enjoyed the Blood Angels series, but it's actually got a pretty involved plot, so I don't think it'll be to your liking. That's all I've read in the world of Space Marines, so I don't think I can help you. I definitely agree that, similarly, the Horus Heresy doesn't really qualify as "bolter porn." The ongoing plot of that series is even more involved than the Blood Angels series.

Faith and Fire along with Hammer and Anvil.

Ah I forgot about those as I was thinking about Space Marines, but I double this recommendation. Sororitas can use all the love they can get.

It was a loophole in his request I used to justify the recommendation. There's lots of action in those books and the Sisters of Battle use bolters. The plots are also more than passable as well.

What about Storm of Iron? and the Soul Drinkers series is really good too.

The quality of the Soul Drinkers series is debatable, to say the least.  I read them because I was in Iraq and needed something to read, and I will never read them again.  But then again, I did meet someone once who loved Battle for the Abyss and there's that one guy who was posting in this subforum who actually enjoys Goto's novels. . . so I guess it takes all kinds.

The Soul Drinkers series is actually pretty good. The first 2 Grey Knights books are fairly readable as well. The third is only redeemed if you compare it to the codex fluff Matt Ward gave them. I'll grant you I've never read Battle for the Abyss.

I think the Heroes/Legends/Victories/Treacheries of the Space Marines collections are best if you just want action. 10 short stories in each one, none of them long enough for more than the simplest plot.

+1

Helsreach is awesome and better than Rynn's World, but the latter is true bolter porn at its finest.

Hold the vox. What the hell did you say!?

Rynn's World is definitely in the right arena but I'd say Helsreach is actually a little more off-centre in to being slightly more involved.
