Knight of the Raven
I can't honestly blame the manager for refusing to let you use a competitor's tools in his own shop. Neither can I blame him for the disdain he showed at used models when it's his job to sell new models. You don't go to a KFC to benefit from unlimited soda refills with the McDonald's meal you just bought down the street after all, do you? He's doing an awfully bad job though if he forbides tutorial games. That's like the basics of every GW employee. It might be true, but it also might be a lie because he doesn't like you showing up with second-hand models and Army Painter brushes. 'Showcase games and well-painted models only' is certainly not a dictate from GW, since my own store allows anyone to play (provided they shop there once in a while, I suppose). It also has frequent tournaments, though I never checked their rules about painted models. Tommie Soule
Hello gents I know no one likes a negative nelly, but I've got to get this out to someone. I am new to the hobby and have jumped in head first and been having a great time so far. I really like the game and especially the lore. BUT... I have not enjoyed my interactions with GW in the least. My first trip to the store was annoying because the guy working there was very condescending about my "used" units. I can understand this because of the fact that he is running a retail store, but it seems strange to stifle the community in any regard. He insisted that I not mention to anyone that I found them used, and refused to give me advice on how to recover some bad paint jobs. I have just chalked this up to one guy being a bit of a jerk, which has been confirmed in following interactions. He has asked me not to use my Army Painter brushes while in store which is lame since I spent nearly 100$ that same day on paints and online orders. After I had asked a guy at the shop to give me a tutorial/play a game he informed me that my models were not welcome on the table because they are only supposed to host showcase games with experienced players and well painted models. My first order is 20 GH shoulder pads for the units I have that are lacking pads. I liked the idea of a bit of coherency but I was annoyed to learn that they were metal, and like someone told me on this site (after I had ordered), they were smaller than the current pads. I had to purchase a file to handle the nubs, which is fine, but I would have like a heads up from the guy that they were old pieces. That same day I got some super glue and plastic glue and when I got home, half of each bottle was evaporated, I have chosen to assume that this is how they are packaged, but for 10$ it seems a bit crazy. Today I saw on reddit that they are no longer distributing the 6th ed Rule Book, which is assumed to be a function of an upcoming update/new rule book which will be extraordinarily expensive no doubt. Anyway, I just needed to vent about what I see as crappy business practice. I will now be ordering online exclusively instead of the web terminal because my interactions at the store have been less than fun. Thanks for listening, end of rant Tell gw. They need to know and will appreciate it. Hope things get better for you Tommie Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/290319-need-to-vent-my-hobby-experience-so-far/page/2/#findComment-3677052 Share on other sites

Dantay VI
I tend to buy online or occasionally if I am in a rush (and the wife is in a good mood) I get to pop into the local GW to pick up the odd bit here and there. Generally they are really okay with me, I havent had a bad experience yet. But if you have, then you must let GW know about it Depending where you are, Flash power spray is super good at stripping paint off of models, my paint came off my FW stuff in half an hour, the bits I soaked over night, wiped off really easy, but it did soften the super glue bond though so some of the models came apart. Brother Crazywolf
As for cleaning up old paint jobs I have to agree with simple green. Forgot I had some soaking for several weeks. No problem. Clear off old varnish, again no problem. That with an old toothbrush and a toothpick, I got most of the paint and primer off of many models. I use a FLGS since the "local" corporate store is literally an hour plus away and spotty hours for my availability. The owners are a husband and wife team and remember me even if I have been into the store in months. The wife only tolerates it for so long, but almost always finds something to look at while I got lost in the wall of goodies. CatSmasher
I opted to paint over them because I wanted to test the medium. I have never painted something so small, or any models to be honest. I am glad I did. I made a lot of mistakes, and did some research in the mean time and I have learned a lot. The wet palette, and mounting my bases on a pop bottle lids have really helped me. I've learned about how to thin my paints, dry brushing and washes so it has been fun to test all this with a bit less pressure. My next 12 are getting built now and they will hopefully benefit from the experience gained. Thanks everyone for you advice and support, this site has been a great resource for me. I am entered in a campaign at a local store, and the games I have played have really taught me how to play. Valerian
I prefer this stuff, now, for stripping paint jobs from models: You can find it in the automotive section at Walmart. I used to use Simple Green, but this stuff works much, much, better. I've not had any issues using it on plastics or old metals. It did soften the Finecast resin a bit, temporarily, so I'd stick to Simple Green for any of those. Rune_Priest_Rhapsody
@Valerian - That stuff rocks!! I used it on some fine cast for like 30 mins and a soft toothbrush... poof, gone. I am moving to Seattle Washington in about two weeks where I know nothing of the game scene. I have looked online, but I am always weary of that. A lot of old reviews and since closed shops. But as I only play with one friend as of late, moving there is a blessing and a boon. I order online and do a lot of modeling and hobby stuff more than playing. And lastly with new game rules on the horizon, who knows what I will be spazzing out on...
