Emperor's Furor
Personally I've always overlooked this pattern of Bolter, it always seemed to be the black sheep, the phobos is the trusty ancient hand crafted design, the tigrus is the fancier, flashier, newer bolter and the umbra ferrox looks beefy and fancy with it's bigger magazine and targeter. The normal Umbra one though seemed a little weedy, but now I'm reconsidering my opinion. After looking at art work, especially that of the early rogue trader era dark angels the umbra is actually quite prominent in them, although in the art work the magazine is infront of the hand, rather than behind it. http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f262/SGM-Daly91/Warhammer%2040K/DarkAngels-RogueTrader.gif http://images.wikia.com/warhammer40k/images/a/aa/Pre-Heresy_Dark_Angel.jpg Now traditionally I favour the Phobos, it's suitable for the crusade era and all the way through the heresy, so my force can be based around anything I want, but the umbra seems to be unique amongst those who collect 30k armies in that they don't use them, the most popular ones from my experience are the phobos and the tigrus. Anyway that's my view on the Umbra pattern now and I think if I do proceed with dark angels I'm going to go with the umbra pattern just for the difference they bring, what do you think? Aqui
I've always had a soft spot for the Umbra, especially as I have a number of RTB01 Marines. I'd love to see more of them in armies Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/290393-thinking-of-using-umbra-bolters/#findComment-3669157 Share on other sites
Armond
I have ten o them spread out thru my tacticals, do it. I like the diversity! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/290393-thinking-of-using-umbra-bolters/#findComment-3669238 Share on other sites
SpecialIssue
I reckon tricking em out would make em look pretty cool. Like others have said, I have a thing with seeing em on beakies, or on MkV Heresy I reckon they look pretty snazzy. A bit like slightly shorter, more manoeuvrable boltguns. Emperor's Furor
Yeah, I was considering going with mk VI but I don't think the current lore supports that any more, so was going to go with the umbra pattern on Mk II instead. Also I'm planning on giving all my basic marines the combat knives from the tigrus bolter set (was able to acquire like 30 to 40 of them recently) and also perhaps a side arm bolt pistol, either the phobos pattern or the tigrus pattern ones, I kind of prefer the tigrus pattern set from fw since they seem to come with more but also have more detail compared to the phobos ones. DuskRaider
I use all Patterns. I don't see a Legion favouring one over the others. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/290393-thinking-of-using-umbra-bolters/#findComment-3669301 Share on other sites
Emperor's Furor
I use all Patterns. I don't see a Legion favouring one over the others. I dunno, perhaps for some legions but I personally think the more regimented ones would try to keep their marines in the same mk of armour from a unit to unit basis, but that's just me. DuskRaider
Yeah, I don't know... I like mixed Armor Mark squads. I've got mainly Mk. III, but I'm catching up with Mk. II and I've thrown some Mk. IV into the mix. But their equipment is all different. All the same coloration wise and whatnot, but mainly Phobos and Umbra, with some Tigrus and Ferrox thrown in for 'zazz. Emperor's Furor
Hmm I might mix them up, I want my models to have character, I started another army before and was going to keep to the same mk but I grew bored of the same armour, so I guess this is probably a better way to go. I'm a stickler for fluff though, but since I'm going with umbra pattern bolters, then perhaps throwing in a few mk IV and MK VI maybe ok. DuskRaider
Yeah... I mean, it breaks up the monotony. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/290393-thinking-of-using-umbra-bolters/#findComment-3669364 Share on other sites
Emperor's Furor
The only issue I'm facing with the umbra pattern atm is that since the Dark Angels are the first legion, I really wanted to emphasise this with a lot of the older weaponry, so I want stuff like graviton cannons, volkite weapons, perhaps the malcador tank and so perhaps the umbra pattern may conflict with that. However I was thinking in one of the stories the Dark Angels retake a forgeworld (and then give Perturabo a load of weird super heavy tanks) so I was thinking perhaps this could go address why they have some of the fancier new stuff to like the Sicaran Venator, Scorpius tanks and the newer marks, what do you think? Aristeo
Sounds fine to me. And if you like Umbra pattern, you'll love the Umbra Ferrox. I've been using all types mixed into my squads as well, it looks really good and not out of place at all.
