Never buying FW from EBay again!

I followed some advice on the forums in an attempt to save money on FW models for my growing 30k Army.

I got two different batches of models delivered from two different sellers. The price I paid was only marginally cheaper than going straight to the source, but I decided to help some fellow ebay users get rid of unwanted models...

Well, what a mistake that was! The models are re-casted fakes and the sellers are not responding to messages.

Hopefully Ebay will refund me, but I have to wait over a week before any action is taken. This has been a terrible start to 30k for me :-(

Been stung by this before. Bought two set of Justaerian Terminators from two "different" eBay sellers, for just under the Forgeworld value due to various people bidding on it. Turned up on my doorstep on the same day, in identical packaging, with an indentical return address.

The re-casts were ok, good level of detail on them - it was just the colour of the resin, and the amount of excess resin,  that was slightly off and gave it away that these were recasts.

I suppose peoples viewpoints on this will be mixed. If the recasts are good and the prices are cheaper then I'm sure there'll be support for it, as ForgeWorld is an expensive alternative to an already expensive hobby. Frankly for the savings I got (a couple of pounds total from 2x sets, including postage comparisons too) I'd rather buy the originals as I'd rather FW get the money, especially if I bundle together a few things and get enough for free delivery (or collect from an event).

I'll wager that eBay won't do anything. The seller/s I dealt with were based somewhere in Europe, and if their accounts get shut down then they'll very quickly generate new ones. It would appear that they have a couple of accounts on the go at the same time anyway. If they're recasts then get in touch with FW themselves - considering it's thier product these guys are recasting they have the most incentive to get these guys out of business. You never know, for bringing it to their attention they may give you something for it.

Yeah I hate to say it but I only buy bitz from eBay anymore and nothing at all from China, Hong Kong, Russia, etc; any full units I buy directly Forgeworld directly. Good luck on that refund, if they aren't talking to you chances are they aren't talking to eBay too so they'll take care of you.

Though I did just buy a Contemptor for slightly below retail but somebody had scraped the Death Guard markings off & glued some Sons of Horus brass on it (Hopefully with something easy to remove).

This is such a slippery slope of a conversation. It's been brought up before with people arguing on both sides, and no good really comes from it. The lesson is yes, there are plenty of re-casters out there (on eBay and otherwise). Yes, their business is profitable. Some people knowingly buy, some people unknowingly buy. Just realize who you're buying for, and if you're not sure and you don't want to buy re-casted bits, go directly through Forge World.

After having this experience myself, just buy from Forge World.  It's no guarantee that you'll get great parts from them either, but they'll quickly replace any bad parts that you have.  I had some MK V marines with badly cast heads and a few miscast legs and they had a replacement on my doorstep in 2 days.

Unless your willing to take the chance of something being recast always buy directly from FW. I got burned really bad once on the chinese version of ebay. i didn't know people where recasting this stuff. I got duped and getting my money back was laughable in the extreme. Now If i buy from anywhere and not direct, i always look twice before buying. If nothing strikes me as obviously wrong with the model, its real in my book. No hurt feelings and I have my cool new model to build and paint.

how can you tell these models you got are fake? are they very obviously fake or is it just the color of the resin?

I hate to take a moral high ground but re casting them is illegal at least in Europe.

I don't want fakes in my army, and the models I bought weren't represented as such. In effect I was lied to.

The seller is based in the UK. If I don't get a refund I will certainly contact FW to advise them of the situation... I also have his address...

Recasting is illegal to sell, but not to buy or own. So your morals are safe.

The funny thing is the two larger recasters have just as good of castings and better quality control then FW. They also have just as good customer service.

My personal stance is that I prefer to buy direct because I wish to support a company that produces a product I enjoy and want them to continue to produce great products. But I have no issues with buying second hand and they be recasts as long as the quality is good. Once the model is painted there is no difference.

I dunno who advised you to go to eBay, but I certainly wouldn't and for exactly the reason you ran into.

I don't have anything against recasts.  It's better for those who can to buy from FW and support the hobby directly, and it's also good to buy FW stuff from others who may not need it anymore (and whose dollars might go back to FW anyway as the person selling buys something else from them).  People who can't afford FW... can't afford FW.  In my mind, it's not a lost sale if someone spends $200 at yoymart or at zanchui because they can't afford to spend $600 at FW.  That person never had the hobby dollars for FW in the first place.  IMO, it's better for them to participate in the hobby, get their stuff painted up, and let people get excited about FW's products.  In the case of the HH, it means more 30k armies out there overall for the people who did buy FW to play against, meaning that they're getting more out of their hobby and are likely to buy even more crack from their dealer.

The downside here is that there are people who have even fewer morals than I, who will buy recasts, represent them as the real thing, and resell them on eBay.  This is what you ran into, and I'm sorry you did, but it's also why you shouldn't buy sight-unseen from eBay or similar.  If you're only saving a dollar or two, buy it from FW.  If the price is way too good to be true, it's a recast (and you could actually get it cheaper straight from the source).  If it's someone at your local gaming store's monthly swap shop with the parts in an actual FW baggie, hand them your money and be confident in your purchase.

The recasts aren't terrible, but certainly a notch below all the things I have directly from Forgeworld. Well, a lesson has been learnt.

I hope it doesn't happen to any of you guys.

Recasts like the ones I was sent hurt the hobby and we should look away from sellers or those who make them.

I'm...kinda in both camps on this subject. I have bought recasts, and likely will again, I won't lie. Think of me as you will. On the other hand, I only do so if it's a good value. I honestly prefer to buy from FW itself, and I will get all my books, and shoulder pads from them. I found a "Legion Mark 3 Bundle Set" on ebay a few months back, consisting of 50 Mk3 marines, 10 sets of Mk3 command upgrade (ended up actually being Mk4), 10 sets of phobos bolters and 10 sets of phobos pistols. I believe that comes out to about $600-700 retail. I bought it for $350. Plus free shipping from where ever it came from. Took almost two months for me to get it, but hey.

I definitely agree with kitwulfen, it's not really a lost sale if the person didn't have the money in the first place. I've dropped plenty of money on FW items, but never $600-700 at a time, so I probably wouldn't have bought those Mk3 guys if it wasn't for recasters.

I buy from FW but have occasionly gotten the odd recast helm or torso, personally Im fine with people who cant afford it to go for recast just as im fine for people proxying units.

but I do not support recasting personally and do attempt to stay away from it if I can.

ebay is a tricky business as sometimes you can be duped even by a bitz dealer.

my advice note down the recaster sellers and compile a list.

ive done that but at the same time I don't discourage others as everyone has their own way to get into the hobby.

plus I know ive got at least 10 recast minis

most people in the hobby use and make recasts of bits or hard to get bits.

different qualities of recasts out there and generally ebay cracks down on recasters most of the russian ones are gone from memory as well as a lot of the ones from china.

if see something on ebay that looks that it could be a recast then dont go for it or go for it its really up to you.

in other hobbies eg gunpla recast resin kits are common as and some ever recast a recast with entra bits.

its all down to money. some places in china do excellent recasts and are cheap as
