ETL III Vow - Imperial Knight

Recommended Posts

"Your superstition and mumblings are but useless chaff before my righteousness."

This is my Imperial Knight which I am painting up to squash Xenos, smash Heretics and crush the Unclean, and present for the annual ETL.

Let's start:

This is the Knight in question. A Knight Paladin.

The shoulder plate is custom made by me. I made a big hole in there, inserted some random Warhammer Fantasy Angel of Death I got from a buddy and two Sanguinary Guard wings and then stuffed the rest with green stuff.

Next I primed it with Chaos Black spray.

Here I used medium sized rough pig hair brush to cover the Titan with gun-metal grey (Citadel Leadbelcher). This will be the lowest layer. The metal parts will remain in that colour. The armour plates will be covered but this colour will still look through to show battle damage. I did not use water. None at all. Just dry brushing with very little colour. I did it irregular on purpose to make the aformentioned battle damage more authentic and make it look like actual metal. It ain't a parade army, this beast will have seen plenty of war.

I used a similar rough small brush and Silver (Citadel Ironbreaker) and coloured the armoured plates while leaving the metal untouched. Again, no drop of water, pure dry brushing. This and the rough nature of the brush makes it look uneven and even a bit dirty which gives it a more used a weathered look as opposed being perfectly clean.

The next step will be using the bigger brush with gun-metal grey and some black to paint the edges where the colour is falling off and use some pale gold for the edges of the silver armour plates (and 'damage' them too) as well as the other house colours.

I spy a nice magnetised Russ in the background too tongue.png Looking forward to watching this topic, keep up the momentum! biggrin.png

Aye, that beast was a lot of work. I magnetised 2 battle tanks and 2 siege tanks in such a way that every gun fits on every tank to give me the ultimate freedom. I can show that in some other thread ;)

Here is the first and main layer of dirt and battle damage:

I used my small rough brush and a bit of water then I applied black (Citatdel Abaddon Black) and my gun-metal grey mostly on the edges. Then I applied the black to the unarmoured parts to darken them a bit.

Next step: Livery Colours on the shoulders as per the Knight Companion fluff, the golden edges and their damage.

As per the Knight Companion I painted the back halves of the shoulders in black to symbolise their cooperation with the Imperium and red as a personal livery. Abaddon Black and Mephiston Red. The helmet show the colours on the coat of arms, even though not in the right order. The correct one will be on the shield.

That will be it for today, seeing as I do not have any gold for the edges. Gotta get some tomorrow.

So, here's the next update. I added a small layer of rust (will be adding another once everything else is done), some more colours and finally the gold trim. The gold I am using is Citadel Auric Armour Gold. I like it because it does not cover the colours beneath at all, appearing already as weathered so I do not need to work on it as much as on other colours to make it look damaged.

Nothing new happened here. I just put a second gold layer on everywhere with a lot of water this time for more even colouring.

The Leman Russ squadron on the background is also ready to blast something into oblivion :D

Thanks bud. I feel that my original idea is really coming through. I know in 40k everyone paints their armour but I wanted to go with the Empire/European Knights theme, which was mainly metallic (silver) because they rarely painted their armour. The colour came from tabards, cloth and other trinkets. Same here, the majority show the silver metal while the colour just gives it that extra touch.

Heres the background of the Coat of Arms. It still needs a bit of fine tuning, especially in the green area to make the colours look even. This is a good way to do work like this:

Just cover it up and remove one bit of tape at a time. After that fix the edges a bit and you got it.

Next step will be attaching the transfer sheet thingies.

Soon done. Only the last layer of rust and damage left. You know, the (painted) holes, the blood and rust and the Chainsword and gun powder on the Battlecanon. Also the decals on the crotch flag, but I am still studying the symbols in the Knight Companion so give it a bit. Then there's the terrain and he's done. Give it a few more days.

The current decals do have a meaning actually. While I am going to rework the Coat of Arms on the shield to make it more like a personal icon for the Knight, the other are well in place. The Aquila on the shoulder clearly means it's affiliation with the Imperium. The Raven on the feet means House Ravenholdt. The cog on the green knee is an AdMech sign of service. The Skull on the red knee.. working on that. I also need to come up why the flag says Scions, seeing as this is a knight household with no affiliation with the Schola Progenium.

The white horse is a bit more complicated. I based their homeworld on Innistrad (from MTG), so the main military faction there outside of the regiment are horseback warriors hunting evil spirits, ghouls, werewolves, vampires, chaos across the planes loosely based on the Riders of Gavony (from Innistrad). The pilot of the Knight came from this background, as do most members of the regiment and this horse symbolizes that. It also shows their way of mounted assault, since they are a mechanized army.

Anyway, the terrain will get some yellow accents, some rocks (it's a stony steppe of sorts. Google 'Gavony' to get the idea) and some fake grass to give it more depth and realism.

You may also notice that the transfer sheet symbols are damaged. I did it with colour and a precision knife. I mean it looks strange if you see battle damage on the steel but the pictures are fine.

I will at some areas where there's gaps and stuff to show the depth. Not too much though because as I found out it just becomes too dirty, which ruins the silver look. As for the battle damage? Nah, I prefer to draw the holes separately with black + rust + gun-metal grey to show where hard hitting shots have landed.

He had his first run today. Well, let's say he has to wash some Space Marines off his feet. Damn did he squash them in melee.

Update time! I gave this baby a massive wash with gun-metal grey and black. I like the effects. Now i need to fresh up the green, black, red and gold as well as some silver areas. Then it's the blood on the chain saw.

Any comments, ideas or remarks thus far?

Have you decided how you'll do the blood? GW's Blood for the Blood God is good, but I think it'll need some thought as the scale of the chainsword will change how it's best applied. I think the angel needs a bit of colour on to make it stand out, if you're going to have such ornate work on your shoulder you clearly want to make a statement of some kind so may as well make it count tongue.png

Cheers for the input fish. I won't make too much of a fuss about the blood. I will probably wash the blade with mephiston red. Along with the washed black it should appear like some dried blood in stuck in there. After that I will need to try things out but I was going to either try dry-brushing some areas or simply apply a few dark red accents. The other areas around the blades I will dry brush for sure. Then I'll mix some small rust accents in there. Won't go over board. I mean the blade is being maintained, the tech priests are not lazy. As for the angel, I will have to think about it. You are definitely right that is needs some more attention, but I alsondo not want to take away the eyes from the rest of the model. I am also not very pleased with the coat of arms shield next to the head. It looks... empty. I consider removing the transfers and putting either a big raven symbol transfer or an angel of death from a DA shield there. Any ideas on the angel and the coat of arms?
