Emperor's Furor
Just a warning though if you lose your terminator squads and veteran squads and lose more squads than the enemy you give up 2 victory points at the end of the battle immediately before actual game objectives and secondary objectives are taken into consideration. Another fluff point, anyone find it weird that the Alpha Legion would successfully campaign with the Iron Hands without incident? It also says they did so with the Dark Angels to, but they are used to secrets. hairojin
That is very true, but the way i see it with three veteran squads as troops in 2000p and adding a terminator squad in 2500p, if I loose all of them I've lost the game anyways. Emperor's Furor
Turns out I can't play them if I wanted as my friend is going to, so I'm now leaning further towards the second most secretive legion, the Dark Angels Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/290515-alpha-legion-in-the-new-book/page/2/#findComment-3673808 Share on other sites
Plague Angel
Do it anyways, Alpha Legion vs. Alpha Legion could be justified... Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/290515-alpha-legion-in-the-new-book/page/2/#findComment-3673824 Share on other sites
Emperor's Furor
I guess but wouldn't be a fun game, we'd both know what we're capable of and we're the only two who are really into the heresy at our store, so would be nice to be diverse. It also says they did so with the Dark Angels to, but they are used to secrets. Something which struck me as well, although it’s definitely not an error since the Xth fell out with the Fists as well, where one would assume them to fall in line with their set-piece engagement preference. What definitely is an error is the mention on the XXth in the Xth entry, because there it says Ferrus did have a falling out with the Alpha Legion’s ways. Oh yeah, and we should totally pull a wolf and call ourselves something else. I see your point, but barring special rules and Rites of War, the Heresy list is much more symmetrical then 40k vanilla already, since all Legions use the same list aside from two units. Do whatever's the most fun! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/290515-alpha-legion-in-the-new-book/page/2/#findComment-3673884 Share on other sites

If I was in your situation I would consider going for opposing forces. I haven't read the campaigns but imagine playing something as wolves vs thousand sons would be great narrative fun. Back On topic: @althair; I found another reason for Pride of the Legion, veterans get 2 attacks bse :D Choosing counter charge as army wide bonus it's like playing with better grey hunters in 40K :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/290515-alpha-legion-in-the-new-book/page/2/#findComment-3674052 Share on other sites
Custodian Athiair
Certain that Veterans are the way to go now. Although I may still take a 20 man tactical squad as non-compulsory troops purely because of the pain it can dish out. Footslog unit across the board. Lending wait to the attack at the end kinda thing. I may make lists today, to see what happens :) Instead of revision. hivey
i may be new here, and not have a 30k army (yet, its in the mail), but im gonna give my thoughts anyways. keep in mind, im thinking for playing against all armies, not just HH legions. for units to steal with the AL rite, i like the idea of using iron havocs. give them autocannon, and 2 or 3 missile launchers, and they can a good bit damage to nearly any type of unit. the only thing theyd really struggle to hurt is AV14, because of the missiles still needing 6s just to glance. one strategy im looking to try is having a full 20-man tactical squad with extra CCW. put a vigilator and master of signal in the squad. take the infiltrate special rule for the whole army. infiltrate the squad as close to its target as possible (probably only 18 inches), then use the scout move from the vigilator to move closer still. first turn, fury of the legion. second turn, you can probably get a charge off at something if theyre still on the table. putting alpharius in this unit will just make it hurt that much more when they hit home. Custodian Athiair
I just whipped up a FOC "army" for the Alpha Legion, and it actually was quite hard. Taking 3 Veteran squads, 2 recon squads. Left 1 troop choice, and i couldn't pass up on 20 marines with Fury of the Legion, which then left no room for Special Weapon squads which was disappointing. Fast Attack was similarly challenging. I wanted a Primaris Strike fighter which only left two slots for Seeker Squads and Headhunter Squads. Heavy Support i ended up with a Fire Raptor for even more aerial dominance, along with Basaliks and a Sicarian. Elites were Apothecaries, Comptemptor Dreads and Leraean Terminators. The disappointing thing here is I would dearly love to be able to drop them in rather than slog them, but that means they need to be a 5 man squad :/ but in real terms apocalypse "free-reign" I would have two 5 man squads with heavy flamers in drop pods and a Deathwind drop pod too and then bring them in as another component of attack. One major problem I had was deciding where to place my Apothecaries. Taking 3, one went with my command squad + Preator in land raider. Another went with the 20 man tactical squad, making them more survivable as they foot slogged it. Leaving one. However everything else was in a Rhino or Terminators (which Apothecaries can't join!). Meaning the only squad capable of taking the last Apothecary was the Headhunter Squad I took, but to use them effectively I needed to get the Apothecary to have Infiltrate, which dictates by Alpha Legion army wide special rule. And then it is barely used across the army :/ HELP! Also Alpharius was taken as Lord of War ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/290515-alpha-legion-in-the-new-book/page/2/#findComment-3674378 Share on other sites
