My army so far... (picture test)

As far as the game went, I was disappointed in my rolling and failed a lot of 2+ and 3++ saves. His riptides and broadsides shot my reserves out of turn and killed the ven dred and murderfang before they could accomplish anything. I rolled so badly with my termies that a 2x broadside team killed two in combat, I conceded shortly after. The fliers do really well, even though he has plenty of skyfire and a skyray.

I wanted to try the dreads because I had only just finished them, but I probably won't play them against Tau again.

I run them with deathwind launchers to break his gunline/bubble wrap, but that is a good idea going forward. Does it confer a cover onto the exiting dreads?

This was my fist game with the dreads, so I still have a lot to learn. I think two on the first turn makes sense, I tried to drop my grey hunter sq with meltas to pop a skyray or railhead, but the jink saved him.

I think I tripped over myself in this list, will learn for next time.

Yes, the smoke gives you a cover save and you use it instead of shooting in your shooting phase. Good for coming out of a drop pod or so I have been told as you can't assault when you jump out of it.

So its good for a pure assault dread as it atleast gives a tiny bit more survivability and the hope of assault in the next turn. With 2 pods landig with dreads you can either gang up on one flank and try to steamroller the opponent or go opposite sides of the gunline and make him split his fire between the 2. Then you need tobe aggressive with the oncoming unts so he has a lot to think about..

Drop the deathwind just before the main horde hits to thin out the pesky fish men and try to break up the co-ordinated snap fire.

You can also pop smoke with the Land Raider too, if it is out in the open with nothing to shoot at

Put the pressure on from the start.

Btw your army looks cracking!!

Someone was telling me that in the Lucius pattern drop pod, you actually don't have to exit on the turn it lands. The dread can stay in that round and get the armor save for the vehicle, and if the vehicle is wrecked, it then disembarks anyway.  I don't know if this applies to the standard drop pod.

There is a special rule drop pod, but i know there is some controversy about the rules. I also feel like it would be an unfair escalation in my home game that I don't want to be responsible for. So far we have an informal rule of one army/codex, and even though i play to win, I don't want to give off a power gaming vibe.

The Lucius pattern is just a Forge World DP.  And did't GW state explicitly that FW models were now legal in all tourneys (of course local groups are free to ban, but it is just an upgraded DP).  I see it more as ForgeWorld gives more entries into the codex - kind of like the supplement, but with units rather than formations.

Very nice army and i can clearly see your improvement from the start to where you are now, Well done indeed 2x thumbsup.gif

how have you found the flyers?? any points/tips that you see as a standout when you use them...

cheers and good luck with the rest you do, Mithril

Fliers are incredible in every game i play them. My data/opinion is skewed to play against tau, so keep that in mind.

They are so tough to shoot down, and bring so much pain. Its hard to roll badly with TL everything. The av 12 and jink makes it tough to bring down, it flies low enough to get cover in certain games, can drop turn and still be a skimmer with av 12, ceramite plating, jink. Power of the machine spirit keeps the template live or a melta if it suits you.

I have used them for assault with mixed results. I put a termie sq and rp in one, and when it got shot down i aged three years. But now i've learned to just take the dedicated transport and DS the termies for extra pressure. I am planning on trying a twin flier with small blood claw pack with flamers to get a small assault punch or objective grab

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I opted to use gold instead of the copper/bronze that is commonly seen because i feel it makes a nicer contrast with Fenresian grey. I aspire to codex colour/aesthetics but i do like to wash them very dark to have a bit more of an "edgy" look.

I will post some full army picture when I finish Logan Grimnar, and my 15 blood claws. At that point I will have everything but scouts painted to my new standards.

I was considering a thread where I show my progress and talk about some of the things that helped my progression and the tricks I've learned over the last 8 months. I am not new to art or sculpting, but these are my first table top minis, so it means a lot to hear the compliments from more season guys with great armies.
