Forge World Question

Recommended Posts

I have gone and done it. I screwed up a Forgeworld model.

It's my contemptor. I picked a dumb pose for the arms, but by the time I realized my mistake, it was too late. The glue had cured. One arm came off with little resistance, and I was able to put it back in place, but the other... it's a lost cause. And worst of all, the part that got destroyed was the shoulder - part of the body, not the arm, so I can't even replace it.

The way I see it, I have three options:

1) Try to make a cast of the surviving shoulder and build my own replacement bit.

2) Email Forgeworld and beg them to send me a new one (even though their policy is against selling parts individually).

3) Email Forgeworld and lie to them, claiming it was miscast.

What do I do? I hate the idea of lying to Forgeworld, and only partly because if I'm caught - if they demand a photo - it will be too late to try honesty; but once I try honesty, it's also too late to lie. I don't think that my greenstuff casting skills are up to the task of creating a new shoulder bit, though I suppose that's what I'd try if I had no other options left.

What do you think I should do. Help me out here!

You could try calling them and begging for a part. Failing that, buy an new entire model, take the part you need, and sell the rest of the parts individually on ebay or something. You should be able to recuperate most, if not all of the price of the new model, most bitz sellers on ebay sell the parts for a lot more than the mini costs.

Did you actually wreck the kit, or is the arm just stuck in a weird position?  An overnight soak in Simple Green will loosen up the glue.  A bit of advice for next time - I always pin arms before I glue them for this very reason.  It lets you play with the pose until you're 100% happy with it, and adds stability to the join.

If you tried to brute force it and tore the resin, well, there's only so much you can do.  My advice would be to cut out the warped resin with a hobby knife or Dremel and GS it back into shape.  If it's not too bad of a warp you can simply model it up as battle damage - maybe your Contemptor caught a melta blast to the shoulder, melting its armor.  Maybe a chainblade gouged out some ceramite.

As Bob Ross said, there are no mistakes - only happy accidents.

It sounds like you destroyed the torso's shoulder socket or its surrounding? As for a replacement perhaps Chinese/Russian/Ukranian seller may be your only option. I've used All4wargames and am happy with their quality. They may do just the torso for you.

Cheers,

Jono

Lying isn't really an option. I was just panicking. After a night's sleep and reading the advice here and elsewhere, I have a three step plan:

  • Step One: Email Forgeworld, throw myself on their mercy, see if I can't get another bit.
  • Step Two: Try to structurally recreate the bit using the two pieces of the old bit, glue, and greenstuff, and then sculpt over the inevitable join. I'm thinking a combination of decorative bling from my bits box and a greenstuff half-cloak over the damaged shoulder.
  • Step Three: Worst case scenario, I buy a second contemptor, use it to cast a new shoulder (which I'll either have to learn to do or pay someone to do...) and then either sell it or be two thirds of the way to a contemptor talon for Apocalypse.

I use something called blue stuff from www.greenstuffworld.com

You can also get it on ebay, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281151002352?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649  great stuff with nice tutorial videos near the bottom of the listing.

It helps me with wee knick-knacks, not sure if it would serve your purpose though

Hey everyone. I thought I'd let everyone know how the situation resolved itself.

Sadly (and surprisingly, from what I've heard of them...) Forgeworld declined to solve my problem for me. However, a splendid and helpful - not to mention a brilliant artist - forumite over on BoLS, where I also panic-posted, had a spare set of shoulders, which he mailed to me. They arrived yesterday and were successfully added to the model. I even managed to salvage the arm, so the pose was fixed without me even having to buy any additional parts. My benefactor will remain nameless unless he wishes to reveal himself, but suffice it to say that he is wonderful and amazing and I am deeply grateful.

I will definitely post WIP pics. Right now what I'm waiting for is some Blood Angels bling I ordered to arrive so I can look into generally making the model even more interesting and attractive than it already is.

I'm disappointed that Forgeworld couldn't help me out. I don't suppose I can blame them - they are just following their stated policy, and it was my own fault, after all - but I'd heard that they were more in the "we go above and beyond" camp, rather than the "we follow our policy - you're on your own" camp. Or maybe they're both, and the particular customer service guy I got was just a stickler for the rules.

Ah, well. Life goes on, and it all worked out for me, so no hard feelings anyway.

I think if the part is defective or its lost then yes they will go above and beyond, because they are atoning for their mistake.

If you happen to mis-pose or break your dreadnaught then, its not so much policy as, dryfit it next time to avoid making a mistake.

If they sent out free bits for every person who mis=posed their models or brke bis off it would quickly become open to abuse.

I am glad you got your dreadnaught fixed up though and I am looking forward to seeing it reposed and looking rather spiffy.

Like I said, I only expected the possibility of a solution because Forgeworld's tendency to solve their customers' problems has been talked up extensively by their fans, even to the point of solving problems that we create ourselves. I'm not upset that they stuck to their stated policy - that's entirely fair. I guess I had been led to think that going even further was a possibility.

Yeah, anyway, the problem is now a non-problem, so the point is rather moot.

Well done on getting a fix through a generous member of the community! That bodes well for us all :D

A few years ago my children broke the ends off my AnGraath models' whip, I e-mailed FW explaining my predicament and they sent me a replacement whip and ends to the other side of the world free of charge!!!

Maybe things have changed now they are closer to GW, maybe I was just really lucky.
