Sorry brothers been away for the past few days and haven't been able to respond.

I gratefully accept the honour of hunting in your Leif and Sven.

Please put me down as a Blood Claw, what wargear would benefit most from as a pack. I would quite happily engage in close combat if you would like in which case a Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon or if ranged I will happily take a Storm Bolter

---Morning Patrol---

1) Post your locations. You can place yourselves anywhere from columns E and F. Please be aware that the dark blue color located on the map is considered frozen ice, and is therefore safe to walk/run/fight on. Once everybody is on the map. I'll roll for the number of kraken and I'll place them at random.

2) You are all given 48hrs to send in your instructions to the Hunt-Master. The sooner I receive your instructions, the faster I can roll the dice.

3) If I forgot someone or if I missed something, please let me know! I am sure to miss things along the way.

--EDIT--

Updated list. The Gauntlet is now closed for those who wish to join. As for those who remain on the ice fields good luck! I rolled the 5 dice and I came up of a total of 22 kraken-spawn. Please give me until tomorrow to put up an updated map with the locations of all the members/packs. Thank you for your patience!

A power maul? For me?woot.gif

It was a cold day on Fenris. It was always cold on Fenris, but even by the standards of the hardy Space Wolves stationed here, it was a cold day. Ace could tell by the lack of talk about just how cold it was - usually the Fenrisians mocked his discomfort in the wintry wildlands.

Most of the Wolves were actively out fighting wars on other planets, but the few who had remained were gearing up to hunt the Kraken - a sea-borne monster known as deadly even by the high standards of Fenris.

Coming here to study Space Wolf combat tactics had seemed like such a good idea at the time. If only I hadn't arrived during Kraken season, Ace mused. He caught a glance at Dizzyeye, further over on the ice ridges. Like Ace, Dizzyeye had made a pilgrimage to study the wisdom of the Wolves. Unlike Ace, he was adapting to the climate of Fenris quickly.

Ace shuddered again from the bitter, freezing wind. Talhon was not without it's monsters. Great droves of them, inhabiting land, sea and air alike, but compared to the beasts Fenris, Talhon was a leisurely paradise world.

Not for the first time, Ace wondered if the Huntmaster had sent them to the wrong place. They'd been camped out here now for some three days, and so far the seas remained quiet.

Sven and Sigvard were sat on a rocky outcrop, bragging about their previous hunting exploits, tracking bears, wolves and the like. Jbickb was checking over his weapons with methodical patience, and Leif...

Leif was waving frantically from a nearby high outcrop of ice to the east.

"Kraken!" Bearclaw called out to his pack. "Coming this way, and fast!"

"How many?" Sven called back up to him. Leif dropped down from the lookout post.

"Couldn't be sure, but there looks to be many. The Huntmaster was right to send us here. Warn the other packs, then return here. And may the Allfather speed your steps, brother!" Sven took off for the other packs, moving across the treacherous ice with the sure-footed swiftness of a hunting Wolf.

Ace gave his power maul an experimental swing. It was a Fenris-forged weapon, and a finely made one.

"Are you ready, offworlder?" Jbickb gave Ace a wry grin. "Ready to learn the ways of the Vlka Fenryka?" Sigvard and Leif began to lope forward as the other packs began to move. Before Ace could give an answer, Jbickb gave a short, humourless laugh.

"It may well be a harsh lesson. Let's hope you're a quick learner!"

The packs moved into their places with practiced ease, even as the kraken began to draw closer.

So, let's talk tactics! biggrin.png

I don't mind acting as a screen for the members of my pack with the big guns - if I can play spoiler and intercept any incoming krakens that should buy you guys more time to keep blasting away. happy.png

Also I've got a power maul now, so I don't mind getting stuck into the fight.

Don't forget only 3 users can occupy a tile. Anyway I was half tempted to surround all of you... so very tempted! Awaiting your further instructions. For Russ, for FENRIS!!!

There was a noise like thunder, despite the cloudless sky. It was so loud that it was felt rather than heard - even the most hardened veterans of the packs hesitated briefly at the noise. Gaining the crest of a hill,  the packs looked out across the islands at the approaching swarm of Kraken.

More than a score of the beasts were approaching quickly. It would be no small feat to turn back this many kraken.

There was silence for a long as the Wolves and their guests watched the great beasts surge across the freezing wastes, smashing apart the ice in their haste to advance.

The spell was broken by Grey Mage, speaking into his vox-caster.

"By the Allfather, brothers. This will be a hunt to remember!"

Battlecries rang out across the still morning air as the packs took their positions on the ice, facing the oncoming danger.

Ace took a deep breath, his difficulty with the cold forgotten in the face of the coming battle.

A hunt to remember, he thought. I only hope it's not one I'd rather forget.

Alright lads, this is it. What's our plan?

For what it's worth, I'm thinking of moving for D1 (or D3) and giving the kraken in C1 (or C3) some headaches with my mace, but I'm also willing to move to D2 and shoot at the kraken in C3 instead to stop the krakens from getting between us and flanking anyone.

Anyone else got any ideas or preferences?

Move me up to D7 and I'll open fire into the kraken at C7

+---------------------+

Quickly checking over his meltagun, Dizzyeye gave a nod towards the Space Wolves, he had been lucky to find friends on Fenris. While he wasn't the only guest on this frozen planet, its climate is similar to mountain ranges found on his homeworld of Vartux. The kraken, on the other hand, didn't have a cousin on Vartux. Having talked with his pack about the beasts, Dizzyeye had decided that the meltagun was the best choice, in theory anyway.

"For Ultramar!" cried Dizzyeye, hoping theoretical was as sound as practical.

I say we soften up the beasts before going in. WLK, Skadi, what say you?

Agreed. I'll start with my heavy bolter and open fire on C12.

*looks are Arez* The air is still cool, but the recoil alone will wake and warm my blood. "This one is for littlbitz!!!"

*as im prepping my flamer i look at Skadi* What happened when I was gone?

I'd like to loose my first volley of missile at B11, A10.

Those with shorter range weapons should sweep the front, those will missile should stop the second wave before it arrives.

Ace i think you should go beat it with your maul I'll move to Do and shoot the C3 kraken with my melta.

And I love the narrative.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jbickb breathed deep the icy air of his home world as he advanced on the kraken's position. Long since had his wanton blood lust cooled into an icy calm in the face of the enemy. As the kraken came into view he let out a small growl and pulled the trigger sending searing death it's way, only for a moment did he wonder the bizarre origins of such a beast, but then the thought passed on. After all, such things should be left to priests to question, his job was to kill.
He glanced at his initiate brothers and then to the Grey Hunter amongst them. Jbickb was slow burning ember to the inferno of the Blood Claw’s battle lust. They would need his control if they were to deal with the Kraken spawn bearing down up the pack. He gripped the power axe “Carwennan” he had been gifted, the ancient weapon felt heavy in his hands, not just from the weight of the great weapon but from the great honour of carrying such a weapon into battle.
He watched as his pack brothers wielding ranged weapons stepped forward and unleash their weapons upon the vile beasts. He waited for the barrage of fire to cease and launched himself headlong at the nearest of his foes. His howl was long and loud as he careened into combat swinging the mighty axe. His mind was clear as it should be as he engaged the creature. One thought other than the intense need to kill his enemy came into his head.
“Hja! Today was going to be a good day.”
* * * * *
I would like (if it's agreed by my pack brothers) to move forward and engage the C3 Kraken in close combat. I have as above gone with a Power Axe as I don't think I decided above. I hope thats okay Mav?
Jbickb, you'd be better off going D2 and melting the beastie at C1, leave C3 to the rest of us and watch the flank, like Hunters are meant tomsn-wink.gif .
I'll back up Ace and Sigvard at C3 and start axing some kraken.
**********
Dropping down from the outcrop he'd been perched on as lookout, Leif loped forward, trailing his brother Claws by a handful of paces, axe held low as he advanced. As he passed Jbickb preparing to unleash the wrath of his meltagun, having seen the damage such weapons could inflict in the past, Leif hoped that some Kraken would survive the Hunter's wrath. Quashing such doubts with another look towards the swarm of kraken filling the ice field, Leif leapt into the fray, axe in hand and a grin on his face.
I think Leif might have the best scheme here.
If we go with his suggestion we'll have:
Sven on D1, Jbickb on D2, and Leif, Sigvard and myself on D3.
Sven and Jbickb will drown the left flank in a wave of superheated flames, and the rest of us will go ruin that other kraken's day. teehee.gif
I'm figuring it's our job to watch the gunner's flanks as much as it is their job to watch ours, so hopefully we can keep the kraken away from Sven and Jbickb.
The Kraken were close now. They were truly enormous creatures, thick of scale, strong of muscle and sinew and sharp of tooth. Ace cast his mind back - he'd hunted many great beasts before. The Garthedions of Athlum, The Blood-Crows of Narth, and of course the Sky-Drakes back on Talhon. All seemingly impossible foes, all bested by skill-at-arms. The memories gave him strength - strong though these creatures undoubtedly were, everything has a weakness.
The Power Maul crackled into life as Ace gave it another swing.
Let the beasts come. Fenris wasn't the only world that bred hunters.
