Some cool HH art I'd like to share (right forum?)

That first missing Primarch is Icarion, an invention of someone on this forum modeling a II Legion army. Its in the Works In Progress forum.

Oh don't worry brother. I'm planning to erase his Thunder Legion from the annals of Imperial history this summer with my 1st legion ;)

But it's a fethin good idea and I think it should be made canon.

Could you give a brief description of the legion's theme and history, if you don't mind? I found the thread but the posts are kinda scattered

Athrawes can explain it best as it's his project. It's a Japanese/pacific themed legion named the Thunder Legion. His primarch is that dude with the ashigaru (?) spear.

He's also a psyker I believe, but I can't remember what his forte was. Nowhere near the strength of Magnus however.

The Angron is my least favorite, actually. He looks kind of... round. Like he'd roll down the hill. It's a bit over-the-top, even for power armor.

Honestly, that's my quibble with both of them.

But those Marines, though!

Hi, I'm glad you like the artwork for the II Primarch. He was commission by Ibrahem Swaid. Him and his legion are based of the Tarot Major arcana interpretation of the Primarchs. Icarion (The second Primarch) is represented by the High Priestess. Basically, the tarot theory goes that each of the Primarchs is accounted for in the characters of the tarot major arcana, including the two missing Primarchs. by using Tarot lore, you are able to come up with a rough approximation of the two missing Primarchs and what they might be like.

As for the Legion itself, I'd recommend you give my log a read when you have the time.

However, a quick summary of them would be that the II Legio, known as the Thunder Legion, was the third legion to be reunited with their Primarch Icarion.  He was found by the Emperor and Russ on a world called madrigal, which was the principle world of a small interstellar empire in the Maelstrom subsector.

The world of Madrigal was once a gigantic shipyard, but a catastrophic event during the age of strife destroyed the surface of the world and forced the population to live above the titanic storm clouds in vast cities built upon the tops of mountains.

Icarion and many in his legion are gifted psykers. The legion specializes in divination and precognitive psychic powers, and the ability to through focus, shut down enemy psykers. Icarion (and to a lesser extent is sons) act as a foil to Magnus and the Thousand sons. (much like Dorn has Perturabo for siegecraft and Russ has Angron for savagry). Magnus and Icarion are two sides of the same coin.

Basically, Magnus is the undisputed might of the emperors psychic ability unchained by fear of the true horror of the primordial Annihilator, and without a understanding of the threat it truly poses.

I think Icarion could be the other side of Magnus' coin. The emperors psychic capacity to bring order to chaos, his nature as anathema to the warp. Icarion is by the nature of his aspect, a calming influence in the turbulence of the warp. He is a psychic/physical avatar of the Emperors understanding of the warp. The true warp, that Magnus can't see.

The Emperor then would embody both aspects of Icarion and Magnus. The recognition of the warp as the great enemy (Icarion) but also a desire to not simply subdue the warp but to yoke its power to his control (Magnus). Both of these aspects are present in the creation if the primarchs, a desire to fight chaos by bargaining with chaos.

This then I think could loop back to the tarot interpretation of Magnus and Icarion. Magnus represents desire for ultimate control of the warp and do can't see it's true threat, while Icarion represents understanding of the warp, and so seeks to subdue it instead of harnessing it.

I'm actually in the process of working with a commission sculpture to create a Miniature of the Primarch Icarion, these are the WIP photos.

. . .

I like the idea of another psychic legion. Why would there only be one? Why not more?

I also like the idea that your legion is a foil to the TSons. That gives you a lot of room to invent a unique philosophy of the Warp for them, one that is fundamentally different from the TSons' philosophy

Would the TSons and your legion be rivals or friends. I'd guess friendly rivals. They respect each other's views but obviously disagree in many areas. Also, I think the White Scars would be very friendly with your legion. The White Scars believe in the value of the Warp and we know that the Khan was on good terms with Magnus. I think the Khan would be on even better terms with Icarion, as both the Thunder Legion and the White Scars have a more cautious approach to the Warp. The TSons are more reckless in their pursuit of Warp knowledge

...just my thoughts. I like your concept and I think it has A LOT of potential. You could make them really unique.

By the way, have you thoughts of any names other than the Thunder Legion, it really reminds me of the Thunder Warriors. It's totally up to you, but are you extremely fond of this name or have you been thinking of others?

EDIT: oh yes, I wanted to ask...what would the Eleventh Primarch be like according to the Tarot Theory?

i absolutely love the Angron... not so sold on Russ though.

WLK

I hate the John Blanche version of Russ and how it keeps getting replicated by better artists. This is a million times better.

this may be heresy of the highest order, but I hate nearly every piece of John Blanche's art. i think anything is a step up from his art.

HATE.

I agree. I don't get the frothing legions of his fans at all and think most of his art looks like scribblings of a someone in high school. That being said, I think he has some neat concepts that can inspire ideas in people, but let's not derail this into a Blanche-bashing.

I think Blanche's art is good at evoking 40K's "Gothic" atmosphere. It has its unique flavour

However, it's not very good at realistically portraying things in great detail. My favourite 40K artist is Adrian Smith. His Emperor vs. Warmaster is simply stunning

The other missing Primarch could potentially be represented by fortune.

In my log, there is a brief bit of fluff describing Icarion's role in the formation of the LIbrarius and how he opposed Magnus. Basically relations between the II and XV are frosty. Additionally, there is a unification war historical account I wrote showcasing the I Legion as another large rival.

As for the name Thunder Legion, I purposefully wanted a name that alluded to the Emperors Thunder Warriors. I sort of imagined Icarion naming them like this:

"As my Father brought Unity to Terra with his warriors of caged thunder, so you shall unify the Galaxy.  Where he had his warriors, now I command his legion. You will be his will made flesh. His vision for humanity will be the Lightning that Illuminates the night and you shall be his Thunder, the echo of his highest goals surging out into the darkness! Where his dreams land, you shall follow! In my Father's name you shall be a Legion of caged thunder, my Thunder Legion."

-Primarch Icarion upon taking command of the II Legion Astartes.

All of that being said, I am very open to people suggesting alternative names for the legion. From the beginning, I always hoped that this would turn into a community project and so input is very important!

Not a bad idea...the only weakness I see is that the Thunder Legion and the Thunder Warriors are so different (learned psyker magi who exercise great restraint vs. brutish, berserk warriors prone to mental and physical degeneration). Of course, the primary distinction would be between Legion and Warriors. I see how that could work

I'll see if I can come up with some suggestions for an alternative name.

Is your Legion still extant or does it represent the Legion that was destroyed prior to the Heresy? By that I mean is it now an alternate version to what is in the HH series, or does it seek to conform to what has been published? If so, what's the story with it being destroyed?

It represents the legion prior to the Heresy and is one of the reasons so many people feel comfortable with it as a project. It conforms extremely nicely with existing material and the major arcana interpretations (I'm almost positive) predate the Horus Heresy books and yet have remained highly accurate. As for how the legion will be destroyed well...he won't tell us yet tongue.png
