ETLIII dilemma

It's ETL time and I've decided to switch my allegiance from Chaos to the HH forum. The only problem is that I'm unsure what to pledge as my first vow...

The pledge will be based on these chaps who arrived in the mail yesterday.

I'm not entirely sold on the Palatine Blades as a unit and leaving them unconverted is against my nature (despite how gorgeous the sculpts are). At this stage I'm considering several different options and conversions. The simplest option would be to give them jump packs and maybe a couple of power weapons/phoenix spears. I've also considered a Praetor and Command Squad, Legion Veteran Squad, Seeker Squad, Legion Apothecaries, and various Centurions such as the Legion Champion, Primus Medicae, and Moritat. I also like the idea of using them as Sergeants for other units but unfortunately this wouldn't be possible under the ETL rules (although I could just count them as veterans for the purpose of the challenge).

So I'm after some input and inspiration from the HH forum. Which option do you prefer? Maybe a combination of ideas? Perhaps something different altogether?

I look forward to your input smile.png

Thanks for the replies guys! Certainly food for thought :)

I'd say that you could make a pretty cool Praetor with a command squad, provided you have a banner laying around. Some head swaps, weapons swaps and the banner and it's already going to be looking pretty good!

I've got a spare regular SM Command Squad banner. I'll have a look to see if works well with the EC aesthetic. I'm also waiting on some Phoenix Guard and plan to use one of their 'Phoenician' style helmets if I decide to go with the Praetor and CS.

Are you sticking with the EC?

I would go Praetor and command squad with those bits. I kind of want a Palatine blade body to make a Word Bearer praetor.

Thanks for the reply Demon. The Palatine Blades do seem to lend them selves to the elite body guard mould quite well.

I'm with the two fraters above me - Praetor + Comm. Squad, a nice banner fluttering or stuck in the ground makes a nice centrepiece - perhaps a couple of dead foes at their feet - could look great smile.png

I'm not sure if my EC are going to be pre heresy, post heresy, or post heresy loyalists. If I do decide to go the post heresy route (whether loyalist or traitor) I'll definitely be adding vanquished legion foes to their bases.

You traitorous son of a.....

Just kidding man, looking forward to seeing you tackle the prissy sons of Fulgrim.

Hahaha, the IIIrd Legion has always been my first love, but as far as 40k is concerned my loyalty lies with the Dark Gods.

Thanks again for the feed back guys and any further suggestions are more than welcome :)

The banner top on the mark II command set will fit the EC perfectly. Have seen it on ebay a few times if you dont want to buy the whole kit.

Yeah, the MkII standard would be perfect. I've been looking at the High Elf Sword Master's banner from the Island of Blood set. If I can find a suitable banner top in my bits box or scratch build one I might go that way.

At this stage I'm thinking of a Praetor, an Apothecary, and a min size Command Squad. I'd still love some suggestions for the Command Squad's load out. Do people even use Command Squads?

I'm thinking cheapish close combat. So combat shields (minor invulnerable save for cheaps) and power weapons - I am mostly thinking about them for the looks at the minute. I've got a squad of breachers to build so might have them resembling blinged up close combat breachers - the guys to run in and support squads who are pinned in close combat or hopefully intercept any Gal Vorbak my friend is wanting...

(I bought some Iron Hands Immortals when they came out so might use the sergeant as one of my command team).

I would give them combat shields and charnabal sabres.

Well I would really give them whatever looked cool but the above is what I would do if I was being serious.

That sounds like a decent load out and fits nicely with the EC aesthetic. If I choose to expand the squad later I could add a couple of axes and Phoenix Spears for a bit more punch.

Now I just need to find some EC appropriate combat shields...

Yeah kizzdougs mine are Iron Warriors and the Immortals are on my desk in pieces :P There are some combat shields in the 40k range with Imperial eagles on I think - I think the one in the assault squad box has a winged skull and the one in the command squad box has a skull and laurel design. Kite shields might look quite cool for Emperors Children - a shape of shield not too common in 40k.

Alright, I've finally made a start!

I'm going to use this Apothecary as my test mini. I've just place a FW order that includes both of the new EC upgrade kits. I plan to use one of the new 'Phoenician' helmets for the Praetor, so until my order arrives I'll be painting the Apothecary and working on the Command Squad.

Ps. Once I've pledged I'll be posting my WIP updates in my old HH TS WIP thread smile.png
