Ultramarine, 4th Company WIP

Signing in,

Hello brothers, I bring to you my introductory work in progress. I have been painting for about 3 months and have dished up a couple of assorted marines but this will be the first chapter I have ever collected. I have chosen the mighty Ultramarines, in particular the 3rd company. I am new to these forums and 40k in general so I will be asking for feedback and also criticism around my painting as I journey.

I purchased an airbrush last week and finally it has arrived along with the compressor. I reason I bought an airbrush is to cut back on the time I have to paint models, and I also like the seamless blend you can get with a few passes and colours.

I painted these guys up tonight in about 3 hours, from pinning to priming to layering.

I have used dark sea blue as the shadow and then worked in french blue, then moved on to a mixture of french blue with light sea blue, then pure light sea blue and then into light sea blue with white.

Added is some gold but other than that this is where I will stop tonight and continue tomorrow/into the weekend.

I CLAIM TO BE NO EXPERT AND AM REALLY JUST LEARNING! I DO REALIZE THAT THE LAYERING MAY BE A LITTLE STARK, THE TRANSITION NOT AS GOOD AS I WANTED IT. BUT ONCE I GET A PIN WASH DONE, I HOPE THINGS LIVEN UP A BIT MORE. ALSO WILL BE EDGE HIGHLIGHTING A SOFT BLUE/WHITE

I am very new to this, but I have definitely enjoyed it so far! I really look forward to getting some squads out for you guys and also inevitably an army!

(PS: I make graphic signatures, so if you like a personalized one like the one below you can private message me and I can see what I can do, it's great fun and I enjoy doing it!)

THANKS!

Thanks guys.

Oh yes, 4th Company how could I get that wrong! Thread topic updated.

Here are some images I got some black lining done this morning but I need to do a bit of a clean up (but off to work so I'll leave it for tomorrow) it's a bit messy for now but it really adds to the definition of the power armour. These guys won't be super crisp, I want them to look a little oiled and weathered so hopefully I can pull this off.

Hopefully I can finish this tactical squad off this week.

Definitely a missile launcher, which can handle anti-personnel and anti-armour (and anti-air, if you're willing to shell out the 15 points) quite happily. Personally don't leave home without a Meltagun or Plasma gun in my squads.

Looking good so far, mate :)

They look amazing so far thumbsup.gif

I like that you have chosen the 4th, to much 2nd around in my opinion ;)

I would second a missile launcher. Overall a good solid choice. I would avoid flamers, except you know you will face slimsy horde armies.

I'd go for Plasma Gun, Plasma Cannon to boost your infantry killing effectiveness (which is what Tacs do well :) ) and then either a combi-weapon of the same type as the special, or a power weapon for the Sarge. Depends on your style of play.

Bit more work done. Got all the heads backpacks and bolters done. They only need a good wash and an edge highlight to help liven them up a bit.

Should I give these guys some weathering?

Also, can I get away with a bit of dirt/dust airbrushed onto the legs or should I invest in pigment?

Working hard!

Any suggestions on the power weapon? I don't want to do the traditional blue and white as the marines are already blue. I was thinking either pink/purple or possible a hot red to yellow.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey guys, got a bit more work done. Also just wanted to let you know I'll be going with some rocky kind of bases, like piled up pieces of tarmac urban rubble.

Umm.. Yea. Got my tactical squad ALMOST done. Just have taken pictures as I've been playing around with my Sergeant. Decals have been applied.

I was totally unsure about what colour to do my power sword- but I quite like this, it's a super strong contrast versus the light blue and it screams "HOT HOT HOT- DON'T TOUCH!"

Haha.

I might add a bit of black near the hilt to really make it pop and maybe some white at the very tip.
