Tempustus Scions Any good?

Are you talking about as part of a Guard army or as their own codex? Like all things it depends on what you want or need. They're cool models and effective elite infantry for us, but that's if you have a job for them. What are you thinking of using them for? They can work well in infantry armies and particularly so in mechanised lists as well as fill gaps in a supporting role.

I'm building my IG army Mainly a tank list 4 leman russ 3 demolisher kits with a full platoon of infantry all with chimeras I want to add a vendetta or 3 and manticores as well

I haven't quite enough points to put a whole army together but I also need a 2nd troops choice I'm thinking of running Veterans or just split my 50 man platooon into a 20 man and a 30 man thus having 2 troops choices.

Thats what I was thinking especially that AP 3 to take out some power armored targets or use them as krak addicts. and bust some medium/light armor

I do have an Imperial knight and If I make room for it should I field that with my IG army as well?

They will also benefit from orders, we have a few comrades who are already quite experienced with Scion use I believe so I'm sure they'll be along to talk your ear off with some wisdom soon :) Same for a Knight, they're awesome models and good anyway but have a lot to offer a Guard army in drawing fire and stomping the nastiest of enemy units.

I'll keep that in mind and once I drop some money on these bad boys payday which is tomorrow thank the emperor I'll hop into the Army list forum. I already Have a Blood Angels with an imperial knight and IG allied attachment in it.

Sounds like you're half way there for your Guard already smile.png

I'm trying my Scions against my wife's Tyranids this weekend. It should be interesting to say the least...

Let us know how it goes!

We're planning on 1250. I need to fit in a Valk so I'm thinking 1 command squad  with either 5 flamers or hot-shot volley guns and 3 scions squads (10 man ea with 2 special weapons for each team w/Tauroxes) along with an Aegis line with Quad Gun. Hoping I can fit in a commissar as well to put on the quad. Wife is bringing a Swarmlord, Broodlord, Haruspex, Venomthrope and other swarmy badness. Fingers crossed!

I'm  thinking of running Veterans or just split my 50 man platooon into a 20 man and a 30 man thus having 2 troops choices.

Um...you'll need two platoon command squads if you split the platoon, and the way you phrased that almost sounds like you don't have even one at the moment, but I'm sure that's me interpreting things wrong.

Worse in that Veterans can take more and only lose out on a lasgun in doing so. Veterans can focus on their specials more for their role without losing out too much but with Scions it's better to complement their hotshot unless you're running a small strike team (e.g. double melta) for example.

So as a rule of thumb if you're thinking about getting special weapons in you should probably look at Vets, but if you want some elite infantry to get a specific job done then the Stormies might be what you need :)

It depends...ten vets with three meltaguns is 90 points...five stormtroopers with two meltaguns are also 90 points...but they're nonscoring and therefore disposable, have 4+ armor, and can deepstrike.  I wouldn't treat any scoring unit as disposable, and melta units are often thrown into situations where they get one chance at a big kill, then they die.  As for plasma, it's also complicated.  Hotshots synergize well with plasma, if you're shooting MEQs, and carapace armor is a given with stormtroopers.  If you pay for carapace armor and three plasma guns for veterans, they get pricey, and the lasguns are basically wasted no matter what plasma-worthy target you shoot at.  On the other hand, Plasma's range means that it's a reasonable choice for a unit that isn't being thrown under the proverbial bus, there's a huge difference between 6" and 24" effective range.  Therefore, it's not horrible to give plasma to vets, you're not "suiciding" a scoring unit.  A minor consideration is that stormtroopers can ride in a vendetta, and veterans cannot....

Personally, I field my scoring vets with long range dakka (autocannons, but plasma would be good, too), and expendable stormtroopers with melta.

Something to consider as well is the scion command squad. You can have 4 spec weps in that one. I'm currently converting so that I have plasma in the standard squads & melta in the command one. At 125 for a melta command & 100 per plasma squad they aren't cheap but they don't need transport to get in close & show up at the same time.

I'm doing the opposite.  plasma command and melta line squads.

Four melta can easily be overkill, but two is almost right to reliably achieve at least one penetrating hit. You get two misses 1/9 of the time,  one hit 4/9 of the time, and two hits 4/9 of the time.

Meanwhile, four plasme guns will certainly obliterate five marines, and will gut even a full ten man squad, while two will at best cause a couple casualties.

that's true.  Before glory boy command squads existed, I had enough special weapons to equip all of my squads with pure plasma or pure melta, with a few flamers and grenade launchers sitting around unpainted, lol.  Now, I've been able to gin up a command squad by painting a sergeant, lol.
