minigun762
Anyone used this before? Seems to be the only basing sand I could find on the Warstore's website, but never tried it. Hyaenidae
I swear by their basing material. I'd suggest it. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/291130-gale-force-9-basing-sand/#findComment-3689307 Share on other sites
Uprising
Yes gale force is great quality of basing material but is expensive for the small amount you get. I suggest you get a bag of reptile sand/bedding at your local pet store. Its the exact same stuff, and a bag will last a life time. battle captain corpus
Uprising is the pet store stuff really any good? I've heard it is but never tried it myself, always just stuck to GW sand etc. Theres quite a bit of difference between varies suppliers sands too...genuinely though the only basing material I really loved was the old GW "mixed sand" which had various textures which was great! Gurth
If anyone in your area is doing some construction work and has a pile of sand (to mix cement, to put under the slabs of a path in the garden, or whatever) ask if you can have a cup full of it for your hobby. SW1
Sharp sand is the stuff use in the building trade. It's got a mix of grain sizes in it. Probably cost the same for a sack of it as GWS sells a small pot for! Same with spray paints and tools and gs. All can be found much cheaper and better quality without much hassle. You just need to let go of GWS's tight hold of you. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/291130-gale-force-9-basing-sand/#findComment-3689588 Share on other sites

battle captain corpus
Cheers Uprising that's very cool! And do you just seal it down afterwards with some PVA like normal? minigun762
I swear by their basing material. I'd suggest it. Good news. I'm aiming for a Martian red look, but wanted a quality material to start. Fibonacci
I thought I might throw this out there. Here are a few common (and cheap!) basing options many people use. Full size pic here. The top two are plain old Kitty Litter. The grains are large and make good rubble pieces. You can crush it easy enough to make it finer and give it a more varied shape and size of grains. For this I put some on the work table and crushed it with a hammer. PRESS with the hammer head; DO NOT WHACK IT! you just want to slowly grind it up. A mortar and pestle would be best but I'm not putting cat litter in my good kitchen tools. The next two are found at most craft stores. Ballast is used by train modelers and can be found near the modeling section. The fine sand is from the kids craft section and comes in different colors. For both of thesea pint sized container will cost less than a GW brush and will quite litterally be a life time supply of miniature basing sand. And finally, premium desert dust. Seriously, I live in a desert and swept this up from my patio this morning. It is very fine and not great for giving a texture but included for the low end of the coarse to fine scale I seemed to have gone with. S.k.i.t.t.l.e
Use super glue to stick your sand/gravel/ballast to your bases. Way faster, and strong too. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/291130-gale-force-9-basing-sand/#findComment-3690040 Share on other sites
Uprising
Cheers Uprising that's very cool! And do you just seal it down afterwards with some PVA like normal? BCC Honesty I just use white glue and then the primer keep it in place extremely well. Honda
I'm a big proponent of fresh cat litter as Dr. Fib listed. It's pretty hard to beat from a cost perspective. Hyaenidae
I picked up a quad pack of various sizes from Galeforce, here's a visual. I also bought those almost 5 years ago, still got plenty around, even after basing all my old Marines Malevolent and Astral Claws. They were worth the cost. Hyaenidae
I always glue the model and then base. Never could get the other way right without ruining something. battle captain corpus
Jolemai: I normally seal my sand down with a very thinned down PVA water mix....maybe 2 thirds water? Literally just a very light wash almost across it to seal it in, then priming it will help too! :) BCC Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/291130-gale-force-9-basing-sand/#findComment-3690862 Share on other sites
Forté
I used to use sand from a park sand pit which I mixed some old flock into. Think the total cost was about 99p. My current bases use a mix of milliput to build it up a bit. I press stones onto the surface to give it texture. Add some tiny bits of smashed slate (found from near a garden which had slate and crushed with a hammer). Then Vallejo Grey Pumice paste to cover. I'll be doing some wooded/dirt bases soon which will use milliput for shape and actual dirt for the texture. Trying to keep cost as low as possible these days. Razblood
Got some Army Painter Battlegrounds basing material the other day, it's pretty nice and relatively cheap compared to other brands. But I have to agree regarding kitty litter/craft sand if funds are an issue :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/291130-gale-force-9-basing-sand/#findComment-3692532 Share on other sites
