7th edition and the future of our hobby.

Recommended Posts

So I've been chatting with some mates and it seems these unbound armies have finally pushed them to the heresy.

A lot of people have been saying that they don't feel comfortable and feel GW have lost their way.

This is not a thread to whinge or fight about GW FW or anything.

This is simply a question.

Where do you see our hobby going?

Is the heresy going to be a main focus for GW/FW?

Is this the push to help people move away from 40k?

I ask because lately with the crusade list and campaign releases plus FW looking at merch sales is our hobby going to be more heresy orientated and how long until 8 the edition or god knows is released.

What is the communities feelings honestly and not to be trolling insert whatever word you feel is an appropriate description ;)

But the main part of the core rules we ignore is the FOC and the ally chart. We also get special D weapon rules and smoother integration of super heavies. We're not immune to all 40K rules goofs, but we do get to avoid some of the worst of them.

Honestly, with Unbound Army lists available, I'm actually considering starting to play again, and I haven't played since 2nd Ed. I like the idea of being able to take what I want my army to look like rather than shoe-horn it around some other stuff I'm *required* to take. I'm not sure how this'll work with HH games, but I'm at least more open to the possibility of gaming again than I was 2 weeks ago.

I'm going to wait for mini rules books to show up on eBay before getting the new rules though...

Cheers,

Jono

I don't really get all the big darn fuzz about the unbound-rage. Are you guys always playing against such douchebags that you'll need to be afraid of the all-WK lists and such?

I know my local players, still being competitive, won't go around making insane unbound lists...and especially not before the rules are even released! I never got the pre-emptive rage thing. If such a small amount of information pushes people over the edge to go play something else they were already unhappy with it in the first place...

I think the most worrying thing is, the turn over. At the rate things are going we will need to buy a new codex every 3 years and a new rule book every 2 years and then there's also apocalypse, esculation ect that will also have new editions coming out every few years, I guess. It's getting impossible to keep up.

One of the best things about death guards reaping rite of war is the fact we can take heavy and veteran squads as troops. Now that everyone will be able to take what they want it kinda renders that pro pointless. So yeah, that's my only slight miff. But I guess I will still be able to play battle forged and receive these rumored bonuses.

It's hard to assess without having the rules in hand so I'm not gonna get over excited just yet. I think we all need to wait and see.

I'm not angry at unbound I'm just wondering how everyone is reacting how it will effect they're hobby and in particular the HH series

Yeah, it was not directed specifically to you Jaspy, just a general statement.

I think that the turnover from 40k to 30k will stay the same, the ragequitters would most likely go to a non-GW game imho.

About the only thing I'll have to worry about is the guy who has the Transcendent C'Tan (which my main problem is that it's a gargantuan monstrous creature...and is smaller than most monstrous creature models)

And I can now take 900 points of spawn to "Lol :cuss you dude" neutralize him, and still take other Fast attack choices so I'm not particularly worried.

An unbound list would be cool for representing a mixed Army/Legion force. IIRC, in older fluff Imperial Army regiments had access to the mass produced classes of Legion vehicles, so a host of Krieg models in rhinos and predators sounds delightful. Last or Krieg beat me to the punch, but I had been sitting on an idea for when my fists are done of a militant knight house based off the Teutonic Knights with a host of scions in MRAPs as halbruder.

For me personally it won't affect me either way. I've been playing with a group that uses a sort of "House rules" for years. I actually like the idea of unbound rules from a fluff stand point. I see way more D.I.Y. and fluffy armies in the future.

Although slightly off-topic the thing that worries me the most is the crazy price hikes. The plastic space marine captain was going for $30 a pop! For one mini? That's insane. I see these price hikes making it more difficult to get new blood into the hobby then the constantly changing rules.

I just broke down and ordered Extermination last night.

This is an expensive hobby, and I think we all realize that. I love Forgeworld and the stuff they put out. Their HH books are just... stellar, top-to-bottom, from rules quality to background material to physical and visual design.

And then today I just saw 7th Edition up for pre-order, and I looked at the price. I looked at the format of what they're offering (three books in a slip case). I picked up my 6th Edition rulebook, which I dropped $75 on not two years ago. Now they're asking for $85.

I think I just had a moment of epiphany. My passion for this hobby has been waning. I used to love collecting codices just to read and peruse, get models just to paint for fun. Then codices nearly doubled in price with the transition to hardbound. Model prices keep creeping up. I used to purchase every Horus Heresy novel as soon as they came out. Then they went from $10 paperpacks and $8 ebooks to $30 hardbacks and $16 ebooks in one fell swoop.

Now less than two years after a previous edition a new one drops with a fairly hefty price hike. Are we going to be looking at $55 a codex now? Does Forgeworld have to delay other projects because they have to transition existing rules to a new edition? Release an interim book to bring the rules up to date? Charge another $50 for it?

And then are we going to repeat the cycle twenty months from now? In the grim darkness of the near future, there are only $100 annual 40K rulebooks? GW is going to kill themselves with this business model if they keep this up, just like TSR did back in the day. And it will sadly wreak havoc with Forgeworld and the Black Library, because these two branches have demonstrated they've got big-hearted, talented people with a passion for the IP.

It breaks my heart, but I'm now seriously considering if 7th Edition is where this hobby and myself part ways.

30K has a modified FOC. You can't use unbound or battle forged, just like you couldn't use double FOC in 6th.

"Battles in the Age of Darkness" have modified FOCS, just like Planet Strike and Cities of Death and other expansions. But there's nothing stopping you from using the Crusade Army List in non-BitAoD missions, if you wanted to for example play Planet Strike missions, or play against a 40k list like Eldar. Obviously some clubs will be less okay with this than others, but seeing as Forge World supplements require a bit more understanding between players anyways, playing the Legion list Unbound or with the Maelstrom of War objective cards or what have you is probably worth a shot, just to see how it is.

It's even pretty suggestive to those of us who only hold back from 30k because we're too divided on what Legion we want to play. But now someone could do a Defenders of Terra list with Fists, Scars, and BAngel units, or do an Unbound list of either side of the Dropsite Massacre...

I'm a hobbyist and not much of a gamer at all.

So editions mean nothing as long as I get my pretty resin/plastic/metal ;)

And, if Games Workshop decide that my arms and legs are the price for a tac squad, then I am happy to be NoLimbs McGee.

Regarding the Reaper RoW, taking Heavy and Veterans as Troops means they have to be killed to a man to contest the objective, rather than just getting something within 3" on the last turn. That's still pretty awesome. I'm going to advance my 10 man Pyroclast squad into and objective, 2+ save, 10 S5 flamers and 10 meltas, troops :)

It really isn't a move to push people away from 40k to 30k that would make no sense. And as already stated, the rules apply to 30k too.

Edit: just for clarification I think all the known changes sound awesome...but I only play in friendly competitive environment.
