7th edition and the future of our hobby.

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the clarification Thunors Hammer. I was getting my jocks in a knot over nothing.

Realistically we don't know how it will all work in practice but it seems having Troops is very very good in battle-forged armies, especially against non-battle forged ones.

I don't care about Unbound for 40k, but doesn't it affect some HH rules like Molokai said? I was going to start playing the Heresy this summer, now I don't know if the changes in 7th edition affects the Heresy Books and If FW has to release FAQs or new stuff to patch that. If I buy this monday the Legiones Astartes and Crusade Army List how much time would their rules endure? Would they be changed given the release of 7th edition? And how much time until we get 8th? A year? A couple of years? And the new Apocalypse?

Guys I'm worried about this. Even when the rules in this new edition doesn't affect the Heresy, how long would it endure? An edition? GW right now just want to release as fast as they can to get their accounts in line. But when will they stop that politics? I just want a rulebook that I could buy for 65 euros and that I could use for many years without me being left behind like it happens with 6th edition (I bought it last summer to return to 40k -.-). Right now I think that I will stay in 6th, and probably won't buy any new edition, because I feel kinda tricked. Hope that FW doesn't change much things in the wake of 7th.

the leaks from 7th are quite positive, many little tidbits and holes in 6th were adressed...it's almost as if they were listening ;)

unbound is basically just apocalypse (which already made some things better than the brb) light. it won't be a problem, people will play what they want to play anyway.

tactical objectives is genius. and it was in apoc first.

not exited about psychics, but meh. word bearers will appreciate.

alltogether, FAQs will be needed, but for now it seems to be an improvement.

Whilst the leaks are mixed, it is the principle that a rules edition will not even last 2 years (I remember 6th being released just as I went on my first dig) and I'm going to the same dig, same dates this year and yet 7th will have been out for several months.
I'm not paying £50 for something that will be obsolete in under two years, that simple.
I'm going to grab the heresy army list and massacre at the lotr throne of skulls, as I want to play my salamanders, and the books are nice, if they have been replaced with versions that need 7th.
That is a question really, is there any hints in the rules of the extermination of 7th coming up?
The fact there is still fw products using Faqs to update themselves to 6th speaks to how rushed this is.
Ultimately, whilst I will still play 40k, it will be back editions, and whilst price will be a factor in this, the main thing is a new edition every year and a half, with a new codex implied is just too fast for me to feel any more investment is worth it, even the bare minimum to play will be at least £80 even if there are no more price rises.

I'm currently hoping that this is a blip. They realised that 6th needed patching, hence the earlier 7th, which will then last 4-5 years at least like a regular edition. However, as we're still on 8th fantasy, I currently have some hope left that 7th isn't proof of a blanket shorter edition cycle.

Aye I'm with other fraters hoping that '7th Ed' is more of an 'oh :cuss: we need to fix some big holes really fast' hence they went the whole hog - that said atm my severe lack of games means I'm invariably falling into the painter/fluff-hauler category as opposed to my usual gaming side...

I have no need to buy the new rules set. I only have heresy models here and i rarely have even had a chance to play 6th edition. If i ever visit home im sure a friend or two of mine will be happy to give me a good few games of play testing of the new rules for free and i can sit down and read there rule book over a coffee and twisted jokes. On the plus side It would be great to be able to play as several legions at one time in a game to really bring out all my forces against some alien scum! :)

I'm working on it, redecorating and updating a really old house at the moment on the weekends + work during the week. This does not  allow a lot of time to post pictures. Never fear brother, those models are getting paint thrown on them. I've painted purple so much im going color blind.

I have a query then that you guys might be able to help with. With the stating that in bound lists, all units are scoring and then troops are scoring+1, what do legion Terminators special rule become then??

Do you think FW will just FAQ it out of the rules or change it so that they score like troops?

I question as this summer the LGWS is doing a campaign and I am deciding when to bring them in

Although I maybe get in three or four games of 40k per edition these days, I love what I'm hearing about 7th edition. It seems finally to be coming back round to a truly narrative style. I play a lot of historical games where the general culture is far more centred around the players providing the balance rather than the rules, and where the narrative and having fun with your mates comes way ahead of winning. I like to play my games with good friends, a beer and pizza to hand, evocative scenarios and most importantly big grins on my and my oponent's faces as our best laid plans completely fail to survive first contact with the enemy. To see my favourite setting returning to this approach with releases like 7th ed and the Heresy series warms my geeky heart.

This is why I wish they'd release sourcebooks about each legion with details on uniforms and organization of individual companies. This way those of us who like a more regimented narrative could build a 'standard company' and those who don't care don't have to.

I guess I have to redact a lot of my first impressions. There are no changes in CC, no changes for walkers and no changes for deathstars. The restrictive ally chart doesn't apply to HH, but I don't care about psi-powers, so only the tactical objectives and jink nerfs remain in my box of exitement.

Yeah, while I don't want to pass judgement until I've actually seen the rules, I'm currently worried they've 'made vehicles more durable' by 'fixing' the damage table, which worked fine, while leaving the unbelievably irritating, stupid and broken hull point and glancing hit combination (the worst thing 6th did)  intact.

It's funny because I rarely ever wreck vehicles (don't play that much).  Even when playing Tau (Pulse rifles) against DE I would be more likely to miss everything or blow up an AV10 vehicle than wreck it. Must just be my luck. I'm sure it'll happen more now they can't blow stuff up. Although I am toting a 10 man multi-melta Heavy support squad :)
