How could Word Bearers have escaped Calth?

Most escaped calth by being freed from their wretched existence by the Warrior Kings of Ultramar.

Though if you escaped alive... well that is another matter entirely.  The only way I can see of them surviving without daemon knives and warp jumping, would be a Word Bearer ship that escaped the Calth's orbital defenses.

You know...that whole cut a hole in the Warp thing.

Did we just forget how to do that after the Heresy? Because I can think of hundreds of times completely bypassing enemy defenses (as Narek and the two Possesed did in Unremembered Empire) would have come in darn handy.

To say nothing of just popping into the Emperor's throne room and pulling the plug on the Golden Throne. We haven't done this WHY?

Maybe it works like:

1- You get out of: Here

2- You end up: Somewhere

Which makes it very handy to escape a nasty situation here (Calth, or the Tau museum in the Pandorax novel), but not really useful to get there. Unless you are:

1 - exceedingly lucky or

2 - have access to exceedingly valuable tech (A super duper knife? rolleyes.gif ) / large amount of quality sacrifices (like Magnus coming to Terra) / lots of very devoted supplicants to beseech the Dark Gods

3 - Aware of a link (webway?) between here and there that you can trust

to make somewhere be there. I'm not sure how the characters you mentioned did it, as I have not read Unremembered Empire, but it seems like one of the above should reconcile it being possible, with it not being attempted on a regular basis.

Maybe there is a downside to their use that has not yet come to light, but that makes their future use much more limited or rare.

Or maybe they lost it in a card game to some daemon that is all "Mortals, please. I :cuss ing love walking."

Or, its like Harry Dresden and the Ways. They're random and twisting and it takes someone who 1.)has access to them and 2.)knowledge of how to traverse them in order for them to be useful to anyone. Narek had to have two of Erebus' bodyguards guide him. Erebus guided himself and M'Kar was guided by M'Kar-who-was-not-yet-M'Kar.

And IIRC, it was the now dead Davinite priests who showed Erebus.
