Captain Juan Juarez
Ladies and Gents (also frothing madmen like M2C and heathens), Once upon a time I owned a whole truck load of books, Codices, novels and the like but some shoddy plumbing put paid to that - I say put paid, it ruined over £4k worth of books (not just GW stuff). I want to get back in to the swing of things but I no longer have the financial muscle to buy everything I used to so, on the basis that I only read the Heresy series up until Know No Fear and remember only bits and pieces about each to be honest, if you had a budget of £100 (or your currency equivalent) which Heresy series books would you buy as the best from the whole series? Edited for clarity. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/291318-the-heresy-on-a-budget/ Share on other sites
Anvilarium
Ten books? The opening Trilogy is pretty much a must-buy: Horus Rising False Gods Galaxy in Flames Then I'd advise these seven which in my opinion cover the major over-tones of the Heresy so far: Fulgrim (not everyone's favourite, but a decent novel which covers the fall of the Emperors Children and Isstvan V) A Thousand Sons (Space Wolves vs Thousand Sons, the destruction of Prospero, and the Council of Nikea) The First Heretic (the origin of the Heresy, bascially) Know No Fear (The Battle of Calth) Betrayer (More Calth, from the Word Bearers & World Eaters point of view) Unremembered Empire (The start of the Second Empire in Ultramar) Vengeful Spirit (The first proper Sons of Horus novel since the opening trilogy) If you could stretch to 11 books, I'd also reccommend Angel Exterminatus, as it's a good book and has several important events in it! Perrin
Do you mean what you should get post-Know No Fear or the whole Heresy? If we say that with £100 you could get roughly 11 novels, you could get everything that's been released since KNF. If we're talking 11 books from the whole series, for someone who has already read most of it, I'd go with the following: Flight of the Eisenstein Legion Mechanicum A Thousand Sons Prospero Burns Angel Exterminatus Scars Shadows of Treachery Age of Darkness The Primarchs Betrayer Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/291318-the-heresy-on-a-budget/#findComment-3694487 Share on other sites
Valkyrion
Assuming roughly a tenner a book then; Horus Rising False Gods Galaxy in Flames Flight of the Eisenstein Fulgrim Mechanicum** Legion* Prospero Burns A Thousand Sons The First Heretic * this is my favourite book, but it is not essential so substitute for Mark of Calth if necessary ** this is my third favourite book, but it is not essential, so substitute for Unremembered Empire if necessary Rats, I forgot about Betrayer...substitute for...erm...nothing. Just add it to the list. Rats - double edit. Forget the list, find them on ebay and read all of them except Battle for the Abyss. Reyner
I have a few kicking around I was looking to get rid of (got most of them on Kindle now, I love that thing) so if you are looking for any in particular I can have a look and sort something out for you if you want. Brother Dallo
Is buying used books an option? I got into the Heresy with new books, but I've been getting them from eBay recently. A used book is just as good as a new one, so I think the savings are worth it. You can pick up some of the older books for about £3. Kol Saresk
My personal suggestion would be how I collected in the first place and that is a book each time. Since they're already released, I'd say one a month, or one a pay period, if you can manage that. Start slow, build momentum and slam home whenever you can. Rejects of Anvilus
It's also worth checking what your local library has, or can order in, if you want a really cheap option. The library I run has a couple of books, so others may well have too.. SW1
I find amazon has them a lot cheaper than the rrp. I've also found with the move over to electronic books quite a few people are getting rid of perfectly fine paper books. So ask around and I'm sure you'll find someone willing to part with them for a reasonable price. I had four books get soaked due to being in a bag that wasn't water proof in the rain. Got them replaced 2nd hand for less than the full price of a new one! I have to say, I completely agree with Kol - especially now that Black Library have changed the format of the books and you can buy them all in Hardback. If my collection was ever lost, I would definitely start it back up by buying one or two hardback books a month until I was caught up to the current release. Captain Juan Juarez
See, I didn't want to buy the "bad" books but I'm kidding myself that I wouldn't feel bad about having the gaps in my collection. I'm thinking that I'm going to have to go down the hardback route and buy one a month, starting from where I finished off with Know No Fear and then once I have all the books I haven't read go back and buy from the beginning. This will require such discipline as I have never displayed before! One thing I'm glad about is that I definitely remember some books as "bad" and no one mentioned those to buy. Thanks for the advice and opinions guys, much appreciated, and I now venture forth to find my first purchase! Kol Saresk
Well, the problem is "defining bad". I can tell you that personally, I wouldn't spend my money on Battle for the Abyss, Deliverance Lost, Angel Exterminatus an some others, but there are others who will tell you to buy them. As he said, bad is a relative term. I agree that Battle for the Abyss was... weak, and Deliverance Lost made Corax look like an idiot which sucks but I enjoyed it (most likely because Gav is the best the Raven Guard are ever going to get), but I liked Angel Exterminatus. On the other hand, the books I didn't like at all were Mechanicum, Fear to Tread, and the second half of The First Heretic. So it's all based on opinion. True statement. I know quite a few folks who hated A Thousand Sons, but I thought it was amazing. Other side of the coin, I despise Angel Exterminatus with a passion I once reserved for Battle for the Abyss alone, yet there are many who liked it. And this is the hardline IV Legion guy talking here. Down to brass tacks, man, it's a toss up, depending on your tastes.
