b1soul
By awesomeness, I mean being generally acknowledged as the best fighter among those of the legions. I remember in the old fluff he's mentioned as a great champion who defeats a lot of traitors in single combat...but does the old fluff ever hint that he's #1? Is this something BL has developed recently? marshal seanisi
From what I can recall, it mostly started from White Dwarf #245, the 25th anniversary edition with the then New Land Raider on the cover. It was a story by Andy Chambers that revolved around the battle of Terra, It starts with a Chaplain blessing a squad of Imperial Fists ready to take the fight to the traitors. Brother Sigismund is at odds with "obscuring the sacred colors of the legion" by wearing Black instead of Yellow. Chaplain Akrida assures Sigismund that "Dorn himself ordered it to be so" and tells Sigismund that he serves the Emperor himself directly. The story then goes on to describe a Massive Chaos Champion with "Massive Twin Chain Axes" , This has always assumed to be Khârn but it was never actually stated that it was him. This Champion was the reason so many loyal marines were dying in droves and Sigismund challenged him to combat. After a back and forth combat, Sigismund slays the Champion and moves on. "There was still much of the Emperor's work to be done this day" As far as I know this is really the first time we got to see the story of Sigismund start to take shape. The boys at the Black Library have obviously developed the character much further and have made him the Champion of the imperium we see today. Scribe
I was unaware of the backstory there, and always thought it was just a given that Siggy killed Khârn. Queue the rainbows and 'The More you Know'. Marshal Reinhard
There's also the whole "The Emperor's Champion" thing, which while only being words, is a bit atypical from a no-nonsense legion like the imperial fists. Also, was given to him while th Emperor was alive, so, he was naturally approving. And I don't think he'd approve for no reason.
