So...can Njal swat down flyers now?!

I was reading the new FAQ and was disappointed as most of your were, I'm sure.  I then noticed something odd about N'Jal's entry, which I thought was just leftover from the previous FAQ.

" "At the end of Njal's Shooting Phase, a single model of your choice within 18 inches is ravaged by a tornado, taking D3 Str 9 AP - hits. Vehicles are hit on their side armor"

Now, that's only one of the results for the Lord of the Tempests rule roll table.  Given that Nova's can now auto-hit flyers and given the removal of the prior ruling re: Njal's storm affecting flyers, I'm lead to believe that N'Jal could swat fighters out of the air like Storm.  D3 Str 9 hits is nothing to sneeze at, either.  You could just as easily smack down a Daemon Prince.

I could be wrong and welcome any thoughts on this observation.

Potentially a very nice find.  However, Skyfire might be required to attempt those shots at full BS, normally.  Including the auto hit, I don't know yet, as I currently lack the new 7th Edition rules set.  Definitely worth looking into for clarification.

It's not a shooting attack, just a special power with an affect that auto-Hits (d3, in fact), so unless they provide a new Errata/FAQ to say otherwise then yes, it should affect any Flyer within 18".  No need for Skyfire or otherwise, because you don't roll to hit; it's not a Psychic Shooting attack (not a Beam or Witchfire, etc.).

I see not yet having the new rules is affecting my understanding of things currently, at this time.  Rather annoying, however thanks for the clarification.

So, nice find, this could mean with a nice points drop Njal might just be a real go to replacement for the normal Rune Priest until or unless our Codex returns RP's into line with normal Librarians overall.  Auto-hit and no skyfire to worry about also really helps, too; get those lucky dice, I'm going flyer huntin' with Njal! 1d3 hits really will make things interesting.

Just remember that his Lord of Tempest effects are determined each turn by a random dice roll (d6 plus game turn), so there's no guarantee that you'll ever produce the Vengeful Tornado effect.  You could go a whole game and not get that result (assuming it isn't the last one, that results on a 7+, I forget where it is in the list).

Agreed Fyth!!

With the advent of Unbound armies, and the pretty spectacular DtW Njal can bring I am kit bashing myself (I do it with all my named HQ slots...) one as I type. Njal becomes a much more appealing choice for my army, plus I 'NEED' another terminator... It'll go right next to that hole in my head!!

And Karack, don't let Val scare you off from this concept, ( ;) ) I have had loads of games when I got off his ultimate power more than once!! Just roll your high roller dice and take 'em to Vegas, baby!!

End of Line

More important, that is only result 6 on that chart.  7+ is the lightning strike, wherein all unengaged enemy units within 12" of Njal take d6 str 8 AP 5 hits, vehicles hit on side armor (I think, not sure that's exactly right).  Again though, that should effect flyers in range.  So that's two results where you can potentially swat down a flyer or swooping flying monstrous creature AFTER your shooting phase (and after your psychic phase, for that matter).

Njal may still be a bit too expensive, but he's more compelling than before.

In my Apoc list at full points, I will be using, "Brethren of the Great Wolf" so this is proving a rather important discussion, considering I have both the PA and RTDA models for Njal.

I'm also noticing that the Brethren unit might fit inside a Stormlord; the question is, can Bjorn go in as well as the full unit of 9 TDA WG, Logan, Njal, Ulric and Arjac?  This is something I need to find more out about ASAP, as in Apoc things get shot dead fast.

My Brethren of the Great Wolf ride around in a Spartan, they all fit perfectly well. 12 TDA models and a single PA guy (being Ulrik). Bjorn just tags along outside. But yes, the Brethren can all fit, including Bjorn, in a Stormlord. Stormlord's capacity is 40, Dreadnoughts count for 10. Battle Brothers can be transported in each others rides now so go at it!
