Mk6 armour

SW1

Recommended Posts

I've got a bunch of beakies in metal and want to pump up their numbers using plastics. Legs don't seem an issue but chests seem like next to impossible to get hold of. The only one I can see as actually being the correct chest that closely matches the metal ones seems to be the SW mk6 chest. But that has the wolf tooth necklace on it. Any other chests knocking around on other plastic kits?

I can see having to convert up a few chest fronts and cast as the only option to go with the legs I've got. Just not quite as advanced in the gs-foo area as I want to be.

So anyone got any ideas?

Not sure which SW torso you are talking about but none of the torsos I know of look like the FW Corvus.

There are some that look similar though:

The Vanguard torsos have the JP straps over most of the identifying features:

As far as I heard, you will face another problem: scale. The old metal minis are considerably smaller than contemporary marines.

Besides, if you build tactical marines, most of the identifying features will be obscured by the boltgun.

I'm after getting them to look like the metal ones. The metal beakies I'm trying to match up to have a very different look:

This is the closest I can get in plastics:

I don't think there's any other plastics close to looking like this.

The forge world stuff doesn't look right as the ribbing on the chest is in the wrong place and all the plastics I'm aware of match the FW stuff. I think the FW stuff is a closer match to the original plastic beakies that were first released. If I was doing the unit from scratch I'd go down that route but I've got almost 20 SW's and 30+ RG that will be in this other version of mk6 and want them to match.

Back packs wise I've still got the backpacks the metal models originally came with and will be using them. So no need to worry about the backpacks.

The aim is to stay as close to the original metal models I already have within reason rather than the FW models which have a very different look.

I've bit the bullet and had a go at carving up a chest and gs'ing it to be as close to the type of mk6 I want:

Now I've done one it's not too hard to do more with gs. Do you reckon it's close enough? Maybe get some brass etch to add detail to the belt for whatever legion I'm using it for?

It's a good match to the original and out of production sculpts. I think the brass etch will lift it to match nicely. There are small brass etch numbers, you could use as squad numbers or chapter numbers, on the Forgeworld site.

Can you post the pic of the three side-by-side, I found it a great comparison.

Great work SW1.

I think I am going to have to steal that idea.

Which chest did you use? Mk 5?

It's the SW mk6 shown next to it. Once you've removed all the necklace bits the pipes are too knackered to fix easily and match the ribbing without a lot of effort. So I removed it and the gs'd it back in place.

My thinking was I can easily match all 3 pipes if I do all of them myself.

There's quite a few that would probably work with a little extra work. If you were working from a mk7 just shave off the eagle, fill in the stomach bit first, let it cure, then build up the belt buckle and once cured do the piping.

Sacrilege!!!

Don't worry there is a SW presence in the HH ETL from me. If I can get certain pads to work a lot more will be backing my current lot up with some TDA characters and wolf guard (command squads).

Decided to see how easy/hard it actually is to convert other marks of armour to match the mk6 I want to use them with. Currently I've got a bunch of different chests on my desk being scraped of any extra details. Hopefully I'll end up with a variety of different chests. Currently looking at getting hold of different legs as well rather than just having the roshambo stance ones. At this rate I might even try gs'ing legs.

Pics to follow shortly.
