The Future of Vulkan(Spoilers Maybe)

Well, there's some prophecy about him being a 'Guardian of the Gate' or something like that  - to me it sounds like the Vulkan might play a part in the Webway Gate defense, but there are other possibilities.

In the shorter term he'll probably wake up with his sanity restored, possibly on time to bodyslam Curze into the planet's center and be ready to fulfill his destiny.

Vulkan and the salamanders were never at the Battle of the Emperors Palace. Also there is no mention or artwork or canon to support him at the Golden Gate fight. This was pueply the Sisters of Silence.

Following the decimation of the Salamanders at Istvaan and Vulkans huge personal tragedies, his legion played little role in the remaining elemenst of the "pure" HH fights. What happened behind closed doors though is anyones guess.

But he wasn't at Terra. :)

There's very little on who took part in the webway portal, I'd suggest that the whole "this legion, this primarch, was there" is a little outdated now, we've already seen numerous alterations to the traditional narrative, so anything is possible.

Yes but when canon has been steered by 35 years of everyone knowing who fought on Terra...that's a little different I feel.

Don't get me wrong, Vulkan cracking skulls alongside the SoS sounds amazeballs!

Some heavy spoilers coming for later novels.

Did you know Angron was park of the crusade against the Ultramarines? Did you know that Fulgrim was corrupted by a daemon sword as opposed to when he was simply corrupted when he went to reason with Horus? Did you know there were two Alpha Legion Primarchs? Did you know Corax didn't just mess up his attempt at speeding up the growth rate of marines but that the Alpha Legion corrupted it? Did you know the Khan went to Prospero and fought motarion after having a brief chat with the ghost of Magnus? Did you know Leman Russ was fooled into attacking the Thousand Sons because he thought he was speaking to Magnus when in fact it was a daemon using a rememberancer as a vessel?

Those are just some of the big changes that come to mind, I think those who were present at Terra could change to.

Vulkan being part of the webway defense actually makes some sense, after all who better to keep at bay an endless attack of daemons than somebody who will perpetually rise again after being killed? The perfect immovable object to counter the irresistable force.

On the contrary, sir. It's always been the Legio Custdoes, the Sisters of Silence, the Imperial Army, Titans...

I'm hoping that he wakes up and the events of Vulkan Lives were but a dream.

Some of the changes made were either grey areas (AL) or for the better (Magnus, Angron).  Some were just bad (Corax).  After the derp that was Vulkan Lives I'm iffy about any further adventures the Salamenders might get caught up in.

As far as getting Vulkan and the Salamanders to the gate, there's a problem in that I don't know how you do that and still leave Vulkan with enough legion left that he's concerned about the Codex Astartes breaking them up into Chapters.  There aren't many Salamanders left, and most of those seem to be getting killed off pretty quick.  If Vulkan is going to be legitimately concerned about breaking up his Legion, he's going to need at least 1000 dudes still alive at the end of the Heresy, and that's going to be hard to do if you have them fighting at the gate with their current numbers.

Still, from a writing standpoint, it'd be pretty great to have Vulkan rally the remaining Salamanders, give a totally balls out speach of awesomeness about heading to Terra to go out like bosses, and then showing up to stomp heads.  It'd also tie into the mindset of the Salamanders prior to hooking up with Vulkan, what with their seeming preference for long odds and suicide missions.

What if

Vulkan only has one more life after waking up? IIRC, Grammaticus was left a mortal after sticking Vulkan with the athame, so it's possible Vulkan suffers sort of a mirror effect as payment for his sanity. Besides, it'd make for a nice balance for the amount of times he abused of his power in Unremembered Empire. Not that I thought it was badly written, but with that sort of ability, he'll off the entire Daemon horde invading the Palace

He doesn't necessarily need 1000 guys. He might just not like the idea that he'll have to split his boys once they go over 1000.

Eh... I don't remember that as being the sticking point.  Not to mention that the Salamanders aren't know for going over the codex recommended limits.  If they had something like 2k or so running around in 40k, then I could buy Vulkan arguing about not breaking up the band, but as of now, it looks more like Vulkan ended up with maybe 1500 or so guys and didn't want them broken up.

Oh God, Unrembered Empire actually continues the story from Vulkan Lives?  I think I"m just going to buy Scars and then take a break from the series for a while.

Unremembered Empire is pure awesome-sauce.

Don't be messing with me on this, because I read Vulkan Lives waiting to get to the good point, only to realise that the good point was probably a hundred pages behind me and that Vulkan was going to be stuck showing all the character growth of a slime mold.

Seriously, he's stuck in the Perturabo designed ubermaze, and instead of pulling together some crowning moment of Primarch awesomness to get out of it, he instead has to have his Dad lend him some mental strength and then he just cajoles Curze into TURNING THE MAZE OFF!!

Where does Unremembered Empire fit in the grand scale of the HH books?  I thought A Thousand Sons was weapons grade awesomesauce and KNF was pretty good.  How's it stack up?
