Ishagu
So, these things look really cool to me and I understand that they are troop choices? The stats look great too, and I've rarely used MCs in my lists... Can I take them in a Heresy army or will they have to make up a second Mechanicus detachment? Also, what is the consensus on these, and what are the best ways to equip them? Any terrible downsides? I would love to run a unit of 3... BassWave
If I remember correctly, a Forge lord upgraded with a cortex controller can take a unit of battle automata as an elite choice. I'd have to check Massacre again to be sure. Ishagu
If I must take an allied detachment just give me a link to the Hq I need to buy on The FW site! Sanct
they are now a support choice in the troops selection in a mechanium army If you have a cortex controller in a space marine army 1 unit may be taken as a heavy support (cortex controller is available for any Forge Lord Centurion and some other characters) If you have the Iron Hands RoW: The Head of the Gorgon, you may take them as Elites choices Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/291658-castellax-battle-automata-questions/#findComment-3701937 Share on other sites
Ishagu
Is there an upside or downside to taking them as allies? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/291658-castellax-battle-automata-questions/#findComment-3701946 Share on other sites
Reyner
It would depend on the ally status for the Legion you are allying them with wouldn't it? The Iron Warriors are battle brothers with Mechanicum but I'm not sure who else is. Sanct
All the Legions are fellow warriors or sworn brothers Legio Cybernetica from Book 2: They have to take an Magos (who should have a Cortex Controller or they revert to programmed behaviour) who is not an IC so he can be sniped You have to take a unit of thallax (who are expensive for what they do IMO) Taghamata Omnissiah from Book 3: Same as above plus: Instead of a Magos you can take a Magos Prime (who is an IC Magos that has to take an upgrade like a consul) Instead of a unit of thallax you can take a unit of Adsecularis Covenant (bit like beefed up IG conscripts) The quickest and cheapest option is a Forge Lord Consul with a Cortex Controller but you are limited to 1 unit in heavy support Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/291658-castellax-battle-automata-questions/#findComment-3701971 Share on other sites

OwlandMoonGuy
Just to be clear, Castallax Battle Automata are only support troops for Thagamata Omnisiah Mechanicum armies. The new entry in Book III, Extermination was in addition to the one that existed in Book II, Massacre. I've been running just 1 as a single unit w/combat blades (+1 attack and rending) & multi-melta as part of an allied Mechnicum detachment. I've also been running a Magos w/conversion beamer, but I've tried Tech-thralls, Myrmidon Destructors and have plenty more planned. I've also played team games where my partner brought multiple squads of 3x models each - but that was a true Castallax/Thallax army. There's really few downsides to these units. They have all the might that comes from an MC with few of the weakness, i.e. they even resist poison, fleshbane & psychic attacks. Given their toughness, wounds, 3+ armor AND INV saves they are just hard to kill. Programmed behavior isn't really all that bad considering that if you have an enemy within 12" it's most likely the one you need/want to content with anyway. Remember too that 12" is measured at the start of every phase. It's a far cry from how the old rage rule use to work. Their primary issue is foot slogging so you can't expect them to always be where you need them. A little chess-like planning is required. In my case, I use them (really him) as a back table defender & for taking mid-table objectives. All 30K armies have to deal with the question of how to cross the table. Given what your opponent brings it's fairly clear where they will base their approach. Even if they are coming in pods or deep strike, it's easy to find your optional starting point for the Castallax. Then, when the unsuspecting foolishly draw too close - they're received by the warm embrace that only the mechanicum can give. If you bring a lot of them (i.e. more than a 3-man unit) it pushes you more towards an entire army strategy around them as a core selection. Ishagu
Thank you very much for the informative outlook. I won't be facing 30k armies exclusively so I wonder what weapon offers the best Versatility. I'm leaning towards Melta as vehicles got a buff, but there is a lot to be said for volume of str6 ap3 fire... I just wish the DarkFire variant was available. I'm a decent painter but terrible at conversion lol Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/291658-castellax-battle-automata-questions/#findComment-3702086 Share on other sites

Sevatar
Just wondering - do they still have AP 2 in combat due to the changes to Smash? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/291658-castellax-battle-automata-questions/#findComment-3702187 Share on other sites
OwlandMoonGuy
Smash rules are now: All CC attacks except Hammer of Wrath are AP2 (unless the models has an AP1 weapon). Smash attacks are x2 strength and reroll armor pen but is reduced to 1 attack only.
