New Thousand Sons fan

I decided a while back that my next venture into the HHverse would be to reads these two books simultaneously (well I listened to the PB audio book) to try and follow the similarites between the shared storylines. I didnt realize before but the two books actually had little in common until the climax, telling two different stories around the same pair of legions. I thought both books were excellent, and reading them side by side really helped show the vast differences between the two legions. I also found reading both made me a huge fan of the KSons and start to dislike the SW as a whole. I dont think it has to do with the way McNeil described them vs Abnett, more I think the entire theme of the Thousand Sons and their fighting style/philosophy makes them far more interesting. Previously I hadn't really had a favorite traitor legion (maybe Night Lords) but now I can say I do have one due to these books

The pre-heresy Thousand Sons are probably the most interesting Legion. Also likely the pound for pound strongest. A Thousand Sons does a really good job of showing why any rebelion that could not 100% count on the Thousand Sons joining them. Would want them destroyed, preferably by another loyal legion.  To McNeil's credit;  It also does an amazing job of showing the Wolves to be very dangerous.  Instead of just how most novels just say it.

Side note:  A Thousand Sons is still the best  portrayal of the SWs.  Also PBs is best when listened to rather than read.

I would argue that they're not different stories at all.  They're both the same story.  They're the story of Tzeentch making preparations to use Horus to take revenge on the Emperor for betraying the chaos gods.  From moment one when they are scattered across the galaxy, the two primarchs are set against each other with the intent that they and their legions will destroy each other to remove both as obstacles to Horus's coup.  Magnus is led astray by his ego, and Russ is manipulated by his absolutism.

A Thousand Sons presents the destruction of the XVth legion as a classic greek tragedy of a noble hero laid low by his own tragic character flaw.  Prospero Burns is a ghost story that pulls back the curtain to reveal how Magnus and Russ were both exploited.

I just finished Thousand Sons and am about to start Prospero Burns.

I agree, what a fantastic story. I was also not a huge fan of the Sons and usually find the Psyker heavy stories from BL a bit boring but this has made me more of a fan of them, and as you said, I kind of dislike the Wolves a bit more now. Looking forward to PB, I hope it is more focused on the invasion more than 1k Sons.
