What legion did you choose..and why?

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd throw this out as a topic of discussion :-)

I chose emperors children, mainly because I love the background from the early days, their quest for perfection, and how their primarch was defended when found by locals and they killed one of Their own to protect him.

Later I love the first 3 books, Saul tartvitz, and eidolons relationship. How lucius betrays his friend and kills his men.

How fulgrim realised to late when he kills ferrus. All of it!

Plus I like painting purple and bling gold haha

what about you guys? Who and why?

Iron Warriors, they have been my favourite Legion since the Index Astartes article in ye olde White Dwarf. Always been a fan of their colour scheme, sieges are always interesting and digging in and yelling "Come and 'ave a go if you think you're 'ard enough!" is too tempting to pass on biggrin.png.

Quite a few different ones...

At the moment World Eaters, and they were sold to me by ADB. I loved they way they came across in Betrayer, brutal, uncaring, under little illusion what they were, fighting I a direct way till their enemies, or themselves, were dead. I especially like the imagery ADB invoked about them being warriors, not soldiers, fighting as if out ancient myth. Plus they have possibly the best colour scheme (Spurs fan so White and Blue is awesome in my eyes) and some nice models from Forge World.

I opted for the Night Lords and actually made my choice before ever reading any of the HH volumes because:

1) Lack of options when it comes to gaming/modelling. The codex is very restrictive when you get away from any of the marked units and as I wanted to portray a force that doesn't make use of daemons or daemonic units that leaves basically, regular marines, bikes and tanks. Plus the chaos model range doesn't do anything for me. Between constant spikes/eight pointed stars/mutations and the fact that whilst I'm happy to acknowledge the quality of models like the heldrake, I personally don't like them at all.

2) The original material in the old Index Astartes. A Legion that made the use of terror and psychological warefare when everyone else was using the biggest guns possible? Intriguing. That and the fact that after the Siege of Terra they didn't make a dash headlong into the eye, they carved and bloody path across the galaxy and carried on raiding for a few hundred years until eventually the Ultramarines and their successors massed to purge them.

3) The series by ADB. Probably the deciding factor for me. Whilst I probably won't be into them as much as I am without the great portrayal they get in the books, taking into account the 3 novels and 3 shorts, I'm now an out and out fan boy.

4) Sevatar. Another contribution from ADB. Everyone's favourite psycho/sociopathic super solider, the fact he was going to get rules and a model was an enormous draw

Those aside, now that they have got rules etc in Massacre makes me even more glad that I picked them. Fluff is outstanding, the models that have found their way out so far are excellent and more importantly to me, the rules themselves are spot on, everything that is lacking for them in the codex is found here instead

I have yet to decide.

In 40k I play Blood Angels so whilst that seems a natural choice, I'd rather paint a different colour for the first time in seventeen years. I do have a soft spot for the Thousand Sons but sadly, they are a crimson paint job...

I did feel a pull when the Alpha Legion rules were released, but I think I'm going to wait for a while.

Green is not blue/purple/gold/yellow, plus what's not to love about a force which actively tries to preserve/practice skills outside of war, the idea of a legion that actually seeks limit the damage upon the populous, even at cost to themselves whilst also being pragmatic in a universe in which such practice is unheard of.
Plus the drake imagery and use of hammers :p

The Death Guard was an easy choice

- I've been a fan ever since Collected Visions and Flight of the Eisenstein, even painted a few back then

- I like the colours

- Attrition warfare, trench fighting and chemical weapons easily gets the attention of a WWI addict

- I'm a loyalist and I love the Dusk Raiders, so loyalist Death Guard putting Terra above Emperor and Primarch

- Lots of Destroyers

When I played the old "Space Crusade" game, there were blue, red and yellow Space Marines in it. When I later started 40K, the blue ones and the red ones had their own Codex, plus some dark green Marines and some blue/grey Marines. I picked the blue ones because I knew them from Space Crusade, and because of the four Chapters available they were the straight up "good guys", whereas the others all had some dark secret or feral attitude or something like that.

I then learned that they strictly adhere to a code of operations and honour. Awesome. (And they actually wrote it themselves.) They are also themes slightly after the roman legions. More awesome. And on top of that they are one of the key factions of the Imperial history.

(That they are also sometimes refered to as the "greatest" Space Marines Chapter was something I only learned much much later, when I got my hands on some original english source books. In the german translation, the 2nd Edition Codex Ultramarines instead refers to them as the "most famous".)

I um'ed and ah'ed for ages, settling on World Eater. I've been a Khorne man for decades, mostly fantasy. But my World Eaters were loyalists. However, everytime a new book was released I felt my urge pulled. So I decided I would do the my Legion from an alternative Heresy in the special projects section of this site. That way I can do whatever I like while the other stuff is being released and then once I'm done I can pick up some of the other Legions for small projects. I'm thinking Raven Guard or Alpha Legion at the moment.

i've settled with word bearers - to be honest i cant stand erebus and hes cancer throughout the heresy but because of that i've had to choose them.  ADB's and Abnett's portrayal of them has been excellent and i wanted to choose a set of bad guys that were there at the gates of terra so it was all encompassed together in my choice.

When Calth gets visited by FW for a book you'll all be getting word bearers so you might as well be original!!!

Alpha Legion. Combination between a complicated paint scheme to figure out and their rep as the Ultimate Jerks. No matter what they always provoked a strong reaction when I read their stories so being furious at them in "The Long Games at Carcharias" and "Legion" transformed into fascination.

If I had to pick a loyalist Legion it would probably end up Dark Angels though. They've got a ton of cool art out there and the description of their baroque weaponry in Unremembered Empire was rad.

Raven Guard

1) Operators in SPAAAAAAAAAAACE! Hell yeah. Mixing stealth and lightning attacks? Hell yeah.

2) Surviving for 98 days on Istvaan? Why not? (Admittedly their escape in space was planned but meh)

3) I like their paint scheme / heraldry

4) Tons of fluff oppurtunity

5) Mk VI armor

Death Guard for me, tough, stoic, foot slogging mothers who eat physical punishment even their brother legions can't take like it was a delicious piece of french toast for breakfast, with a stalwart side of salty British bacon and the egg's of excellence in honor and demeanor, all next to the pile of baked beans representing their tough mountainous born heraldry from their home planet barbarus, lead by their mighty hash-browned center piece of a primarch

p.s. i wish id got breakfast this morning................

Imperial Fists for many reasons but only one should suffice: Sigismund!

In all fairness they have awesome fluff, their paintscheme and heraldy is badass and they are the embodiment of the Emperor's ideals...

Plus I play a diy Templar chapter in 40k so it's only fitting I find my roots msn-wink.gif

My very first 40K army was the Black Templars when they were adorning the box art of the newly released 3rd edition.

I like Yellow (well Gold inthe case of my army)

I love the imagery of boarding actions and sieges and wanted a drop pod assault/boarding torpedo feel to an army.

I like terminators.

I like the idea of an army of stubborn heroes raised from all the regions of ancient Terra standing defiant against the hordes of xenos and traitor alike like a stubborn bulwark in the darkness of the void.

Sigismund.

For all these reasons and more I am proud to call myself an Imperial Fist player.

'The Legionnes Astartes are the Emperor's strong right arm. And the VII are his FIST!'

I like the Raven Guard quite a bit for most of the same reasons komkr likes 'em.

the lightning assault/ hit and run warfare allows for a very different type of warfare from the rest of the legions, and They seem more humane going out to help those oppressed or those without hope against larger forces. Even a small force could be deadly! the fact they survived what was supposed to be a deathkneel for them and the fact that they bounced back and are still a thorn in the side of the enemy makes me smile more.

Plus hey, the Primarch could still be a live, and I could imagine Corax performing hit and run attacks towards the 40th milenium.

I'm leaning towards Dark Angels, for the simple reason that my 40k army is mostly black with green trim.  The first legion would allow me to mix and match parts from my existing army as I build 30k specific models.  A simple black paint scheme would also allow me to play Raven Guard or Iron Hands in a pinch.

I haven't I can't decide on a legion, my opinion runs something like this

dark angels - never liked them never will plus are gav's special snow flakes and I'm not a huge fan of gav

emp. Children - can't stand them, hate purple, think fulgrim, eidlon and lucius are cocks

iron warriors - moody jealous primarch plus don't like silver

white scars - bit too the forgotten legion, colours ok not huge fan of space mongols

Space Wolves - loved the original concept just hate what gw have done to them in 40k and not overly keen on 30k portrayal so bit nervous as to fw do with them

imperial fists - hate dorn, love sigsmund

blood angels - can't stand red not overly keen on fluff

iron hands - flesh is week wannabe cyborgs, ferus is a cock and don't like the fluff

world eaters - hate angron/love Khârn, colour scheme is good, berserkers with brain implants bad

ultramarines - hate them in 40k due to gw super special characters, not huge fan of blue, soem of the characters from BL have been cool

death guard - hate the characters (except garro)

thousands sons - psykers = hate

sons of horus - horus is a puppet & loser, abby & terminators are pants

word bearers - never liked, never will plus hate lorgar, erebus and kor pharen, not fan of colours either

salamanders - never liked + nick kyme

raven gaurd - alpha legion are so  much better than them

alpha legion - hate the way have been portrayed by BL

I'd have to say I'm either pre primarch Warhounds or Dusk Raiders.
