What legion did you choose..and why?

Recommended Posts

I went with Imperial Fists myself for much of the same reasons others have. Just everything about the VII resonates with me.

But were I not enamored by the VII, then the Alpha Legion...Legion... would've been my choice - the antithesis of what the Imperial Fists are all about. Also that Forgeworld paint scheme is damn impressive so that's bonus points in my book tongue.png

As an addendum, with all the HH fluff Forgeworld is producing for the Legions, Its getting really hard for me to stick with my plan of "Paint my Fists First THEN a filthy Xenos force (wraithdar for those curious) THEEEEEN a second legion/chapter!" It might soon turn into a "Gotta Catch 'Em All" kinda deal @_@

Edit:added addendum.

Luna Wolves.

I wanted to portray a force from before the Heresy, something that evoked the Great Crusade and humanity's height.  The Luna Wolves and Horus were undeniably a centerpiece to the era.  I enjoy the more muted wolf themes and iconography (as compared to the over the top Wolf of the Wolf Wolf Wolf that I've played with in 40k Space Wolves for the last decade), their color scheme is stark and striking.

One thing that doesn't quite fit, though, is their preferred tactics.  I'm actually not getting a whole heck of a lot out of the Legion rules for the LW/SoH.  I'm not playing a drop pod/reserve-heavy force, so things like Edge of the Spear just don't do anything for my army.  If I were to choose a Legion based on my playstyle and tactics alone, I would probably have ended up with Iron Warriors or Iron Hands.  They both have the methodical approach that I favor, with an emphasis on the importance of vehicles on the battlefield.

Don't think I could stand painting all that silver.

I'm up in the air so have planned on a bit of a shotgun approach.

Originally I was going to do a pure Iron Hands force and started getting hold of forge world bits to make a force. But this was going pretty slowly. So I've raided all my armies and pulled out all the models that are not in mk7 or mk8.

Currently doing a few units of SW's as I had enough metal SW's in the right armour mark. It also helps several characters are also in HH marks of armour (anything other that mk7).

Next up will be be Raven Guard as there's a lot of beakies still to be used up and hopefully I'll have built up enough Iron Hands by this point to crack on with them.

If I get any odd models left over I'll be painting them up in loyalist Terrans from the traitor legions.

So as you can see I've majorly failed to stick to any one legion even though my intent was to just stick to the IH's originally.

There are a couple I am working on.

Alpha Legion - Not just their subterfuge, but their need to be top dog, the Alpha of the Legions, and prove their worth.

Iron Hands - my preferred Legion. I love their cold, mechanical logic, it speaks volumes to me. I love tanks and robots.

Torn between three.

1) Alpha Legion, always liked them, the sneaky subterfuge, assasinations, dummy armies etc. However always felt they were impossible to play as in 40K, especially with the Chaos Codex. However the Horus Heresy Extermination book, had amazing rules making them play like I always imagined. But built insanely amazing fluff for them in the background section. I think my favourite part is they clarified how they fight. Yes all the sneaky stabby stuff comes first, but when they finally deploy they do so with every aspect of warfare attacking you. Outflanking vehicles, large bodies of troops walking to meet you, fast reacting stuff to hit you and run away, artillery to blow you to pieces, air-support, probably even attacking from underneath. And then they will stop at nothing till you are wiped from the battlefield.

2) Salamanders, they're my 40K force loved them for a long time. Because of that I had said I would not get them in 30K, made no sense to keep painting green. However the rules for HH Salamanders are SO SO SO good, especially compared to the crummy ones we get in C:SM, Strength 5 flamers are a god send I'm sorry (and "proto-Storm Shields"). Plus those models :drool I mean they're just gorgeous!

3) Space Wolves, dislike the majority of their 40K fluff, but they're 30K background is amazing. I totally adore it. Plus their Pre-heresy colour scheme is so much nicer. The characters are just brilliant, and I look forward to their rules and models so much. Side note recent Space Wolf 40K books have been picking up the slack, Battle of the Fang and Blood of Asaheim both quality!

He's just getting into them, loves it, the weathering on them is awesome! Iv still yet to weather the ec, palatine blades, and Phoenix guard will have little or no weathering and battle damage due to their arrogant stance and letting the lesser troops take the lower tasks!

Raven Guard for me - stealthy, special ops style warfare that epitomises the surgical strike aspect that I love from the Astartes. If I wanted brutal assaults, I would have played Imperial Army.

I was torn at first between them and the Alpha Legion (who I will also do after getting many thousand points of XIX together) but one word will give the game away as to why the Raven Guard won for me - Sharrowkyn

World Eaters

Primarily because their 40k incarnation was where I focused my first army, back at the end of 4th. Angron's story resonates with me too. I don't necessarily like his actions as a primarch, but I do really have a soft spot for his legion, helped, no doubt, by the depiction of them in Betrayer, and other 30k stories.

My perception of them, primarch and legion both, is that they were just sort of screwed from the word go. Angron's experiences upon exiting the pod, subsequent enslavement, and then his 'rescue' by the emperor, as well as the experiences of the World Eaters upon being reunited with him, leave me with the impression of doomed people, embracing the nature of their doom, embracing the emotional states it is bound to create, and going down fighting. The grim humor, the warped brotherhood, their honesty, most particularly with themselves, about what they know themselves to be, all speak to me.

The more I have read, the more I care for all the legions though. They all have their heroes and villains. They all have their tragedies and triumphs. They all have things to respect them for, as well as things to question.

Someday I will have all the legion specific units and their primarchs painted and in my displays cabinets. For now though, I'll work through the all World Eaters I have built.

Iron Warriors.

1. because METAL Rules!

2. because Artillery Rules!

3. because we are somewhat like the tenth, and somewhat like the eighteenth, but we do our own thing, ya know?

4. because my psyche is too similar to the iron warriors for me to be comfortable about it...

Seems lots of support for most legions, the only two so far who haven't are salamanders and EC ( I think there's one each) where's all the love?! Lol

For those of you doing IH, I hope you model ferrus with a magnetised head :-)

Always with the head thing. Don't hear me sayin i hope they make a Magnus model crying to tzeentch while the russ poses above him.

Poor Ferrus forever the primarch who lost his head

He'll never get ahead in life.

Emperors Children, though in all honesty after reading the first few Horus Heresy books it could really have gone any way with the four main legions featured in those books. I think I plumped for the EC after reading Fulgrim, just really liked the book and like the character of Fulgrim and his model swung it.

It was close though with the Death Gaurd, really like Mortarian and I've picked up him and Typhon to paint up. I still could see me adding a unit or two for the Death Gaurd if I'm completely honest.

Also really like the Iron Warriors.

And way back in the old days I used to run DA, could imagine painting some of those at a later date as they appear.....

Oh my god when will it end........ :)

I couldn't decide on just one legion and I can't afford to build them all to represent them properly.

So, I chose the Legio Cybernetica = Robot Space Marines!

Mechanicum (dark or light), any and all Legion rules, and any primarch = Optimus-Primarch!

Sure my cybernetic AI's might be hunted to extinction by some, but y'all have to catch them first.

Emperor's Children for me because I like to party!

But really it started off with me liking them because they were purple(favorite color) then after I read fluff and books I related with them, I find myself always trying to do things right/ \perfect even though no one is perfect, also I am big into music and art. Also I like how between their pre heresy and post heresy personalities are complete opposites.
