Shooting Vortex of Doom from the Stormraven!?

Ha! While trolling around different sites for answers on the "how many psychic powers per turn" question (I also sent a query to GW - By the way I still stand on my position even if I'd be happier to be wrong!), I found this little gem:

In the "Death from the Skies" FAQ, the Psychic pilot Ace get "vortex of Doom" in addition to "banishment" as well as PML2. IIRC you pay 50pts for the ace, no? So with a bit of luck, 100pts (plus the cost from the SRs) nets you 4 Warp Charges and 2 flyers slinging St D Vortexes than can't hit them back?

Imagine putting down those puppies after moving 36" from reserve.

Nice find, depends if it is worth the extra 100 points.

E: Cost 3WC and automatic perils if you fail. While it's a nice idea in theory, you might lose your S/R on a 1. xD

E2: After some thought and with the Vortex rule, it's quite tempting as a Turn 4/5 last resort if things aren't going your way.

Think one of the two is +1 BS, could be wrong.

E: 3-4 is +1 BS, 1-2 is something regarding dogfights. Useless if your opponent is not running flyers or DftS.

However +1 BS isn't something to grumble at but not quite worth 50 points.

Depends. Its a generally ignored supplement that adds nothing of value to the game, and was widely panned on release. No one cares about Flyers besides the terrible trio, the rest are garbage-tier with overpriced wargear and gimmick special rules.

However is 50 points for either noyhing on a 1 - 2, +1 BS on a 3 -4 or level 2 ML with Vortex and Banishment seen as a good deal?

It is generally ignored i agree but theres nothing against the rules to me taking it in any game. The dogfighting rules however have to be agreed upon which us why i have said 1-2 is nothing as nobody would

Except if you go to GW 40k tournaments, it's a requirement to play...

I thought GW dropped all support for tourneys? As I understand it each tournament can now make its own house rules and FAQ's (as Adepticon has been doing for years), along with their own restrictions.

Pretty much. DftS was a blatant attempt to entice spending on the new Flyer boxes. It failed miserably because A: most Flyers are garbage and B: a lot of the changes and additions the supplement introduced were mediocre or too obscure to matter in normal games.

Even the events being held at Warhammer World this summer don't even mention DftS (Example Event Pack).   To be honest, some of these supplements, especially DftS, remind me of the old Second Edition DnD Supplements; at some point they just started producing books for the sake of producing books.  I mean come on, did we really need The Complete Book of Gnomes and Halflings?  To me, Death from the Skies is the equivalent to that useless tome from a bygone age.

Did they change the (What was the name form last year?) Tome of Battle?

(Link is blocked at work)

Last year specifically stated you needed to use the latest rules printed for your units.  Whcih makes DftS necessary for us, as it holds the lastest version of the Stormraven.

(Ah second edition DnD.  I've very recently got back into DnD through work.  Been invited to some 3.5 games. :) )

If an event requires you to pay for a supplement that references ONE unit in your codex, I'm pretty sure they're not worth attending. The Raven already has been FAQ'd, we don't need that silly expansion no one cares about.

Well, this was the same GW event that stopped (IIRC) one of our forum members using thier army of bikers as a different Chapter, no counts-as.  but then allowed someone else to counts-as a Contemptor as a normal Dread.

Or something like that.
