Captain Juan Juarez
Lately, because of the amazing works I keep seeing, I have rediscovered the urge to model and possibly even paint again. I am a loyalist and was previously a Marine player with probably some 3000 points before I cleared that and a lot of other stuff from my flat/life. However, now I am torn between revisiting the Marines or going with the Guard - who I have always enjoyed the fiction of. So, from a modelling - and possibly painting - perspective what does the Guard have to offer that I should be aware of, pros and cons, before making the choice? march10k
Hobby-wise, tanks and camouflage patterns. Marines have little of the first, and none of the second. hendrik
guardsmen take more skill to convert then marines due to a lesser amount of bits and poses in my opinion. however that doesn't mean it's impossible, there are plenty of perfectly good kitbashes available,as well as bits from alternative companies! I must say i've enjoyed converting my guardsmen more then i have enjoyed converting my space wolves. Secondly, the imperial guard can bring you a gazillion of tanks, which are in my opinion the most fun to convert and paint. the only con there is to starting a small imperial guard force is that it will not remain a small guard force and you'll soon find yourself making 3000 pts lists and still having units in abundance! ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292183-a-convert-among-you/#findComment-3712412 Share on other sites
Frater Cornelius
I can not use models without convertions and individual touch. If you'd see what I am currently doing to my Knight, your heart might stop :D I did massive convertion with my SW and I am currently turning my IG units into the holy wrath of the Emperor himself (and also a Knight House). It is difficult though, not everything I can visualize will I be able to actually do. But I am still trying, for the Emperor and my enjoyment ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292183-a-convert-among-you/#findComment-3712478 Share on other sites
Captain Juan Juarez
I'm looking to build an "army" just for the sake of building and probably eventually painting; I'm quite willing to take a week to finish a single figure completely and assemble a force that you couldn't take to the table. Although my skills are pretty much basic, I can convert Marines to a low level with swapping, chopping and posing but I've never laid hands on an unfinished Guard kit of any description. Frater Cornelius
Gotta get that Essence of Nurgle running. Some people call it 'green stuff' for whatever unearthly reason. You will not find many bitz in 40k for IG except you want Xenos flavour. But Fantasy offers a lot of choice with the Human factions and Vampire counts if you want a more gothic tone. Thoqqu
When it comes to guardsmen... small things can make distinct visual differences... but of course one shouldn't shy away from the thought of cutting a sergeant into 15 little pieces just to put him back together looking unique ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292183-a-convert-among-you/#findComment-3712564 Share on other sites
hendrik
exactly! i hadn't really used green stuff much before, but once i started playing guards i rolled into it by repairing cut up uniform sleeves etc. with only minimal kitbash skill one can make really cool guardsmen! WarriorFish
This is fantastic news! It's like welcoming a prodigal son home to the warm hearth of collecting and painting You don't collect the Guard - you enlist for life. As we're fond of saying once you go Guard there's no going back and it is very much true! In a galaxy of super humans, monsters and daemons we take a group of ordinary people, clad them in cardboard armour and metal tanks and send them to victory! If you want real heroism in the 41st Millennium then look no further than His righteous hammer Guard may not be as easy to convert as Marines are, but they've far more interesting kit bashing opportunity. You'll build up a bits box quickly and find you can do all sorts of things in no time. There's also lots of scope for different bashes, themes etc as the Guard is so diverse you can almost do anything you want and still have it make sense in the background! You can really go to town on Veterans as many of us have done for example That's before you even consider the multitude of painting options. Parade ground? Desert? Snow? The possibilities are almost endless! We've lots of cool tanks too, and they're much easier to convert and bash kits with and you can do a lot of cool stuff, all you need is the imagination (or to see someone else's). Guard do require a fair number of models though, so be prepared to have to devote some time to painting up a Platoon or two. Though you can always go with a Veteran company to avoid this if you like! The strength of the Guard is the sheer variety of options, which is also a weakness in that you must decide what you want... or have all of it. Most of us end up with the latter, consciously or not Last but not least it'll give you the excuse to hang around here more often, and what better reward could there be?
