Palatine blades and Phoenix power spears

Recommended Posts

I'm buying some Phoenix guard instead of standard tartoros termys, and they obviously come as standard with spears.

Looking into the blades rules, I can give them Phoenix power spears for a fairly cheap amount.

Given their high I value and the fact you can take 10 who will be cheaper than Phoenix guard, is it worth equipping 5-8 with spears, as the ap2 on the smash, they will be an even more dangerous unit being podded in a kharbydis with some tactical wound takers?

What do you think?

I guess the potential is there - but iirc. (at work so can't referrenc the books) the spear becomes AP4 after the initial charge, due to the current Power Spear rules (however this may be different for the Phoenix Spear) - I think if done right it could cause mass carnage and also take a LOT of heat away from other parts of your force - used alone without support however and it's an expensive suicide squad...

Phoenix Spears are not standard spear-shaped power weapons, so they use their own rules and not those out of the BRB.  So they're still AP3 in subsequent rounds of combat.

I think you have things wrong, however.  Palatine Blades can take normal power lances - not Phoenix Spears.  Phoenix Spears are only available to EC characters that have access to a power fist.  Maybe this has changed in the Crusade book and I'm unaware of it?

The FAQ allows Palatine Blades to take Phoenix Spears and increase the squad size to 10.

I'd probably keep the spears to 3-4 per unit. I've had the same idea of using the PG as regular Terminators, the PG just seem to lack versatility but the models are brilliant.

Yes this is in the istvaan campaign legions book. Ap2 +1s on the charge is painful..especially if one were to put eidolon leading them..thunder hammer attacks that aren't unwieldy on the charge?yes please!!

Pg I'd use in larger battles, simply because they are a threat unit. When you mention Phoenix guard to opponents they fear them..even though they might not be that good lol

And as you say the models are stunning!

Yeah, it's platinum. Members of the Palatine Blades used it as an honour marking and as a symbol of their membership.

The description of the image says that its platinum. I guess it's a pretty difficult colour to reproduce in print.

Yeah I was wondering what kind of paints I'd use I mean, sorry, should have been a bit clearer

I'd probably go with either Iron Breaker or Runefang Steel and keep it very 'flat' (ie. no highlighting or shading).

You could also search the interwebs for a platinum paint. This is the best I could find http://privateerpress.com/content/radiant-platinum

Personally I think it's a bit too 'warm' in colour.
