CoffeeGrunt
I've noticed the CCS was a bit underwhelming when used with my Veterans. (I'm slowly amassing Guardsmen slightly behind my rate of amassing tanks.) Hence why they're got a Lascannon and two Plasma Guns. Horribly effective when I played them last, brought down a Greater Demon of Nurgle almost on their own. Seahawk
Commander with bolter, standard, voz, 2xmeltas, all with cammo gear, Astropath/Ordnance/Fleet guy if I find the points and that's it. They cross the board behind the main lines giving orders and trying to stay away of trouble. Usually very competent and cost effective although I have to say that I lean towards infantry heavy or combined arms lists. How often do they get blasted as they're crossing the field? How do you keep them from getting blasted? It's hard when they're often the warlord; you want to keep your squishies safe. In my experience when the unit is taken out it is because the game was already over anyway. That's why they have cammo gear, to help them survive while they move behind their own troops trying to find a safe place and being out of LOS if possible, but I try to keep them near enough infantry to give orders and occasionally assisting when the enemy manages to break through (with meltas, and kraks). I have many years playing Guard and it has served me well so far. More often than not at least the most important dudes of the unit (officer and standard) survive.
