Astra Militarum Anti-Air units

Hey Guys,

As my topic suggests, I was wondering what viable anti-air options IG had instead of a Vendetta/Hyrdra? I have tried a squadron of two Hydra's, but every game I've played Hydra's in they have been next to useless against flyers and even more so against FMC. With BS3 my hydras only hit with half there shots and they wounded a bit over a half of that.... then against flyrants in particular i watch my opponent make every armour save! Basically two dedicated anti air units that cant destroy air units..... GREAT! Aside from those two units im not sure if there even is another IG anti-air option. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

I've just been ignoring them basically. and blasting all hell out of my opponents troop choices (we're still in 6th btw). it seems to work as long as you have lots of bodies to remove. It actually makes him really angry that his helldrake flies about killing guardsmen and I just let it.

I'm personally considering the Vulture Gunship with TL Punisher Cannons and a Vendetta at 1850. The Vendetta can handle high AV and low armor save areal enemies while the Punisher can hurt up to AV11 (and destroys AV10) while still contributing against FMCs. As much as I don't like fielding flyers (I'm weird) it seems the best and cheapest way to have some answer to them.

Either that or I'll ignore them but ignoring them is really hard if you play mechanized.

How the hell is twinlinked BS3 only hitting half the time?  Statistically, with a squadron of two hydras, you should be getting 6 hits. A squadron of hydras destroys air and skimmers like nobody's business!  Now, if you're expecting them to perform like twinlinked melta at close range, yeah, they're not that automatic.  But you try fielding the flyer and see how your nuts shrivel when you contemplate six S7 hits against your precious bird...

I can vouch for a Hydra Battery with 2 Hydras. They destroy skimmers, hurt fliers and they even can get around 2-3 hit when firing at ground targets. If there is no air, use them to grab objectives, block their movement and shooting. You can drive 12" since you are limited to snap shots anyway.

Another way are twin-linked weapons.

But, allies also help. In my current 1500 list I have 2 Razorbacks with psy ammo (s6 ap4 heavy3, twin linked), 2 Tauroxes (TLAC), 2 regular AC, a TL Vanquisher and a Stormraven with psy ammo AsC (s7 ap4 heavy4, twin linked, rending) and a TLMM. Stormraven will win most dogfights while all that twin linked goodness can spam av10/11 fliers right our of the sky.

Hey guys,

In regards to flyers, I haven't had my Hydras take them on.. but against FMC I have, and being AP4, I've watched numerous times my opponent make saving throws against my Hydra's with out suffering a wound! It is extremely frustrating!

I am definitely considering bringing an extra punisher (Pask being one of them) 20 S5 shots is just plain fun!

Know what else has 20 S5 shots at 24"?  Ten Grey Knights with psybolt ammunition.  It costs 220 points, but it also comes with force swords across the board, is super-scoring, and ten marines are a lot harder to kill off than a single tank, most of the time.

10 Pathfinders with a Pulse Drone, 125pts. :P

I tend to ignore flyers. I have the worst luck with vendetta, and I'm not at all impressed (see : I've tried them and they did nothing) with hydra, especially in 7th since they got nerfed. When I absolutly want anti-air, I spam hydra platform. Since it cost less, you can have 3 for the price of 2 hydra. With a little bit of luck, it can be much better (or much worse).

I've seen somebody spam veterans in chimeras with 3xmeltas across the board.  There was simply no way for a flyer to get over an important section of the table without being in range of 3 to 6 meltas plus any other weapon his army brought.  Every flyer/skimmer/whatever on wings was obliterated.  I was impressed by that tactic.

Ah, and no hydra or quad gun whatsoever, only meltas, AC and LC in that army.

+1. Grey Knights are very solid allies for AM. I have experienced them in action. They won an almost unwinnable game and pushed through where henchmen and IG failed. I have certain 'hero' units that I like most. Stormravens, Purifiers, Wyverns and Tauroxes did such an amazing job that one game that I can vouch for those any day of the week and at court if need be.
