Spaniard
Hello all, Just picked up the new Astra Militarum Codex and i want to pick up a stater force. Below is the link to the one on GW site, my question is will it be a good start to a army? http://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Cadian-Defence-Force Are their any units that would be a good suggestion to add to this? LordCommanderSamirus
If you do buy that you should also pick up a second command squad to cannibalize the spevial weapons from. -Samirus Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292401-imperial-guard-start-force/#findComment-3717429 Share on other sites
Frater Cornelius
First, make up your mind what you want. Mech? Blob? Hybrid? Then act accordingly. Second, decide on aesthetics. You want regular cadians? Cheapest but most boring version. Some prefer other regiments and others make up their own with their own unique looks. Plan ahead, just diving in can lead to loss of money. WarriorFish
The Defence Force is a very good start for an army, it'll give you a nice core to work with and plenty to keep busy painting. As Immer said from there you will need to decide what direction you'd like to take. A few more troopers would be good, then you can look at the other options :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292401-imperial-guard-start-force/#findComment-3717558 Share on other sites
Captain Juan Juarez
I'm eye up the Defence Force myself and I haven't even got to grips with my initial purchase yet! Spaniard
I want to have a lot of artillery in my army, I like the idea of weapons that don't need line of sight to hit their targets. I also want my troops in the toruxs I like their look a lot. So their isn't really a difference weather I use Armageddon troop then regular guys since they all use the same rule book right? Frater Cornelius
No problem at all. I endorse the Steel Legion. As for LoS ignoring guns, you want the Basilisk and Wyvern. I can also personally vouch for the Taurox. When used correctly, they leave the Chimera in the dust in certain setups. I love them. Spaniard
On the GW site they show the steel legion heavy unit but the only show two weapons are all four options avalible in the box as well as a command squad for them? captain sox
One thing to consider, while boring the Cadians (and I assume Catachans) offer tons of extra bits in their kits. You can build up a reasonable force quickly... and not go broke. While Steel Legion and DKoK are appealing and cool, it may be costly in the end. I have the Starter box and I got the Box with a Chimea and Infantry Squad too, an additional Command box and a box of Scions. I'm pretty pleased with all the goodies I can make, and being a user of bits sites, I've added about a dozen more dudes cheap! Not a bad start! Good luck and have fun! Cod
Recently for my birthday I received the Cadian defence force and was pleasantly surprised with the value contents. Its a good start deal. It adds nicely with the few cadians I already had, all unpainted, save for 1 test cadian trooper lol! Also received 2 x imperial knights for my b day. Im currently sitting in a hospital waiting room on laptop daydreaming about if I ever get my dark angels finished, will I add a astra militarium 'ally', or start a 2nd detachment?!! I keep hearing how great the wyvern is. Have fun deciding how your build will go! Dark_Apostle_XVII
With 2 of those boxes, that's one great start to the army. Using just what those two give you, you could run two completely different lists. 1: Pask in Vanquisher Leman Russ Battle Tank (squadron mate). Infantry Platoon 1 - consisting of: Platoon Command Squad in Chimera 2x Infantry Squad (only special weapons) 1x Heavy Weapon Squad Infantry Platoon 2 - consisting of: PCS in Chimera 2x IS (only special weapons) 1x HWS Very infantry focused with only your Compulsory choices filled. 2: Company Command Squad in Chimera Infantry Platoon - consisting of: PCS 3x Infantry Squad (this time with Heavy Weapons in squads too) 1x Heavy Weapons Squad 1 x Special Weapons Squad (made with 6 guys left over after adding heavy weapons to three infantry squads) Veteran Squad in Chimera Leman Russ Leman Russ I would personally run the second list but that is just two examples. The box is great though. Good Luck :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292401-imperial-guard-start-force/#findComment-3718407 Share on other sites
Captain Juan Juarez
Personally, having considered the Defence Force, I have instead opted against it and put funds towards three more squads of Cadians and another Command Squad - soon the Third Cheme Legion shall rise! For me this was the better choice as I intend on having an infantry-focused regiment, whereas the Defence Force opens up the possibility of a range of options to follow through. Although I would say my choice wasn't the money-saving option but at this stage I don't want to cocnern myself with Leman Russ' or Chimerae to put together. Spaniard
so I decided to just get one for now. It suppose to arrive tomorrow, hopefully it gets here im very excited to start my cadian regiment. My next question the for the defence force, when i unwrap the box are there options for the heavy weapon squad and the leman russ tank, or do they come like it shows on the box? WarriorFish
Cool, the first steps on the path to glory! The standard Russ kit can also build the Exterminator, Eradicator and Vanquisher - with some clever magnetising it can build all 4 ;) The HWT kits give you the pieces to make all of the weapons - again if you're clever with bits use you can spread them around a little bit with additional bases :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292401-imperial-guard-start-force/#findComment-3721083 Share on other sites

There are also 3 of each weapon but only 3 'legs' (whatever you call them). LC and HB use the 3-legged one while Mortar and ML use the 2-legged. With just the box you can build 3 LC and 2 Mortars for instance, if you add another Base from somewhere, you can build 3 LC and 3 Mortars. All you would be missing is the crew of 3 weapons since there are only enough legs for 6 guys (2 per base), but they are pretty damn cheap on ebay so no problems there. Spaniard
Warriorfish and Immersturm thanks for the tip i do plan on alot of magnetising for my leman russ tanks, so i can always keep my options over and i like to play alot of my stuff as WYSWYG. I actually do have a couple of bases laying around so i will deff having 3 las cannons and 3 mortors in my starter force. Dark_Apostle_XVII
If you put HWT's in each squad, you'll get 4 spare men you can use for your mortars as 1 HWT replaces 2 guys. WarriorFish
Don't forget the Missile Rocket Launcher and Mortar teams don't need a kneeling pair of legs, so the kit goes a long way :) I look forward to seeing your first models when they're done :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292401-imperial-guard-start-force/#findComment-3721660 Share on other sites
Captain Juan Juarez
Not to hijack Sirrah Spaniard's thread but in a similar vein does anyone have any experience with the Scions box set yet? I really want some Scions and eventually the Valkyrie so the set would seem like good value except the Taurox (whatever is the plural?) are not something I desire to model. Dark_Apostle_XVII
I do mate, been working with the Scions a lot myself. PM me with any questions or if you start a topic it will save us taking this off topic :) *Edit - unless you mean the big Scion one, not the individual sets as I just have experience with the scion models. However I would personally not go for the Scion army box as there is no discount and I, like you, have no interest in the Taurox and would not be able to sell them on for the same. Would suggest you buy them separately from an online retailer that does discounts. WarriorFish
You could put them in here, but for completeness's sake it might be better to make a new WIP topic for your army so you can update everyone on your Guard's progress :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292401-imperial-guard-start-force/#findComment-3722277 Share on other sites
