Focused Fire in 7th Ed?

After reading once more the new shooting phase I noticed there is no focused fire any more. Am I correct? So if I shoot at an enemy unit which has 20 guys basically out in the open but it happens to be that the one closest enemy model is behind 4+ cover save it means that as long as this guy survives every shot the whole unit is efectively behind cover against that specific unit unit of mine?

Mmmmmhhhh.....

Fire on my target, or LOS-block the models in cover. Now they're not valid targets, you can't kill them, but you deny cover to the ones in the open!  No?  I've only had two games of 7th, and those with people who don't own the book, so we may have been doing it wrong...

Its kinda weird that the designers gave more detail to how to shoot but simplified how to save. Now you have to think the order in which models will shoot within a unit but you can not any more pick who to shoot at (regarding cover obviously). It's a bit contradictory to me. I accept this will not be very frequent but this rule can be exploited by beardy players.

This is slightly offtopic but is related to shooting.

Had a game where I used blob of 50 guardsmen with Yarrick. Heavy fire and guardsmen die, I had placed Yarrick in the frontline (live and learn) so eventually he was the closest model.

Opponent shoots at blob, wounds were rolled according to the majority T3 (Yarrick has T4), nearest models are removed as casualties and Yarrick ends as closest, he was allowed 2+ look out sir! rolls but still had to roll some 4+ saves and lost a wound.

Questions: Should the shots be done against Yarricks T4 or with the T3 which was majority in the unit? If with majority, can the wounds be allocated to Yarrick or will they skip him and move onto guardsmen.
