A Codex you might envy?....

Do you ever envy Dark Angels?

I'm serious.... I mean for fun I ask the question. But part of the reason is I'm just really getting my feet wet with Dark Angels, and the last chapter I played was Space Wolves for a couple of years.

And I keep comparing what I can do with Dark Angels to what I used to be able to do with Space Wolves. Grey Hunters, for instance, were just an amazing troop. I loved the options and I lived off the squad banners for re-rolling 1's.  I actually really miss the Termie configs, the scouts, and I personally really loved using TWC.

Character wise I think when the last codex came out I fell in love with Arjac who pounded so many Xenos into the ground I lost count. (He was my 'Khârn'). So Arjack might be my favorite character in the book, even though I even enjoyed the basic Rune Priest, and Logan in many a game.

So I wonder if anyone has gone the other way.... is there anything you truly miss about Dark Angels? Or as a Space Wolves player is there anything you really admire about  the D.A. codex, and would love to have/use?

I think the most obvious is Bikes as troops, or Termies as troops, or the mixture as troops. Although there is a heavy IC tax, I hear this one most often, but not sure it's a huge advantage.

Actually there isn't too muchthat I envy, maybe the Ravenwing, soI could do an elite biker army, but I could use whitescars in the SM codex also.

The banners do look awesome. I saw some battlereports on www.miniwargaming.com and youtube and the banners really helped the ravenwing decimate armies.

I am also a little envious of armies which can have FNP.

But no, on the whole I am pretty happy with my lot and after a few tweaks, hopefully we will have a pretty good codex.

The only thing I'd say I'm envious of from other codex' would be the Stormraven. While it's not the most amazing gunship in the world (though tooled correctly it can hurl out a lot of death), it's transport options are freaking amazing! 12 man unit and a Dreadnought that can assault? That's freaking insane! That's the only thing that gives me pause with my Stormeagle (which I love as a gunship), but taking full use of that 20man cap is so freaking hard outside of a 10 man termy squad and I just honestly don't like using terminators (my dice are cursed to fail 2+ saves). Oh how I wish it allowed you to take 2 separate units in a Stormeagle.... alas wishlisting. But as for DA's... nothing really, unfortunately for them (in my opinion at least) they got rather quickly lost to the Codex Power Creep that came out after them.

Well you could always put 15 Bloodclaws, A wolf priest, Wolf GUard pack leader & Ragnar Blackmane in it plus 2 wolves that makes 20 in a big killy ball of death.

(I am assuming you can attach more than 1 IC to a unit). Wolf Guard for challenges, Wolf Priest to make sure they Caws hit stuff and Blackmane to be a big ball of death with wolves as ablative armour.

Expensive, but fun.

Until the release of 7th and Unbound armies, I was seriously envious of the Deathwing. Plasma Cannons, Deep Striking and the ability to take a goddamn Apothecary. Why the hell we can't get a legitimate Apothecary is beyond me... So now mostly a FnP Apothecary.

End of Line

Defiinitely something I've thought of doing, but given that a good loadout for the Stormeagle puts it at ~300pts and then all of that, if they take that thing down before it gets to unload.... that's like a 1000pt army gone in one fell swoop. While it remains similar with the Stormraven, it's still nice that you can at least take separate units and drop them where they're needed, instead of one big deathstar.

So, there is a lot of goodness to the contemporary Dark Angels codex, but that is a factor they it is a modern 6e book, with a completely new design philosophy than our old early 5e era book.  I know that all of the things that I think are terrific about the Dark Angels book, like all of the unique weapons and wargear, etc., are coming our way soon, so there really isn't any cause to be envious.  If anything, I'd put my money on many of the First Legion players being envious of us, whenever our codex is released.

Best,

Cheap whirlwinds and unkillable LandRaiders.

Yea, I was all over the whirlwinds at first, but now... I don't think they're as decent as I hoped. The Landraiders are good... but very expensive. The best part might be that they are super scoring (objective secured) in a Deathwing army.... Still I hardly use them.

Yea Ravenwing is fun... slightly repetitive but fun. As you say, vanilla marines can do it pretty easily.

The Banners are a good point. I only use the Dakka banner and haven't bothered with any of the other ones but maybe I should check it out.

Plasma cannons on terminators. I constantly wish I could do that.

Okay, I'll give you that one. It's nice, but the ultimate flexibility of Wolves Termies are still the cat's meow imo.

Well... the Deathwing still have ONE thing going for them, the will all have Objective Secured whereas another army of Termies will be forced to wipe them to truly own any objective. However, I've learned having about 15 Termie Troops in 1850 pts army supported by expensive Landraiders, really isn't that great.

Apothecary in the Termies? I guess that's okay, but requires a command squad which most Deathwing players can't fit into a list!!!

The truth is the Wolves codex is very good right now. I don't think it takes a new one to make others envious. lol

I mean:

I want SW to have apothecaries for my army. I don't care if DA have to take a command squad to get one. That's not what I am envious of. Why don't we get a priest or apoth that grants FnP. They do. I'm envious.

Third edition, actually.  The Space Wolves didn't have a 4e codex. We went from 3rd to 5th, and now to 7th in the near future.  A clear pattern has emerged.

V

Except that the Wolves had a 1st edition army list and a 2nd edition codex.

Yeah, I'm aware of that.  Didn't bother to mention those as they weren't relevant to my point that a pattern has now emerged.

Yes, a codex so awesome it actually works for more then 6mnths :P

Seriously though, I can't wait for a new wolf dex, my mates will be back into 40k (the wolfriding McWolfstar finally killed there interest) and I can look forward to New BA soon enough.

As for WW, they really aren't so great, but 2-3 cheap ones can clean house Vs orks, who are my only opponant. Then again I'm BA, and we have everything except cheap troops covered.

The dakka pole is good, but I've found it underwhelming vs the old GreenLine army I fought.

Good points....

2 Whirlwinds... sure, but I gotta find the points and then you're babysitting them because, hey it's two tanks! But I agree.

I guess I am the only person I know who loved using TWC? I thought they were a really usable, and fluffy unit.

Dakka Pole on bikes is a very different level of Dakka-ness. ;)

I've almost talked myself back into Wolves, so I better go now... gotta game tonight with my DA. ;)

Things that the Dark Angels have that are really cool:

Every Special Character (Just 5 of them, though) has at least 1 Chapter Relic (Azrael has 4!).

There are 5 additional "Generic" Chapter Relics for some of your generic heroes to take.

There are 3 pretty cool choices for Sacred Standards (one per army).

There are 5 other choices for slightly weaker Banners and Standards.

There are now 3 new  Deathwing Weapons (pretty cool melee weapons with nice rules)

There are 2 additional melee weapons that aren't restricted to just Deathwing Knights.

There are 7 new ranged weapons that are unique to the Dark Angels

The Special Issue Wargear section has at least 6 items that are unique to the Dark Angels (as far as I can tell).

In addition to several new units to the Dark Angels, their 6e codex brought about a significant expansion to weapons and wargear choices in the army.  It is this, above all, that I'm really looking forward to.  I can't wait to see what kind of cool stuff we get new access to (please, please, please don't put 'wolf' in the name for everything!).  I do expect, however, that we won't get quite as many new toys, but we will keep our Sagas to compensate.  However, I'm really excited about the possibilities for:

Logan Grimnar - The Axe Morkai is an obvious choice for a Chapter Relic, but what else?

Njal Stormcaller - The Staff of the Stormcaller, Nightwing, and his Runic Terminator Armour for Chapter Relics

Ragnar Blackmane - Frostfang back and as a Chapter Relic

Ulrik the Slayer - The Wolf Helm of Russ will definitely be a Chapter Relic

Arjac Rockfist - Foehammer and the Anvil Shield as Chapter Relics

Lukas the Trickster - Pelt of the Doppegangrel

As far as new units, the Dark Angels received 3 new light attack aircraft, the Darkshroud, Dark Talon, and Nephilim Jetfighter.  None have a Transport Capability, though.  The most significant inclusions, however, are the new Ravenwing Black Knights (like Vanguard Veterans, but on Bikes instead of with Jump Packs), and the Deathwing Knights (which are an improved version of the already formidable veteran Deathwing Terminators).

Other than getting some version of our own new unique Flyer(s), I cannot imagine what the designers might do to incorporate new units for us.  We already gained the TWC in our 5e codex, which was already a big surprise new unit.  What could they possibly do to pull off something like that again?  I haven't a clue.

V

I really hope SW get a few new sagas and a new transport like the StormRaven. Opening up the scouts a little and fixing blood claws would be nice too. Maybe a FnP option.

I had an army in 2nd (before I repainted them chaos) and I've followed them since. Strong codex, really fun community; GW really need to throw the pup's a bone.

Also naming things frost or ice to break the wolf naming convention.

I am super envious of the grenade launchers dark angels have on their bikes. And also the ones on land speeder storms. And land speeder storms in general. And chapter tactics - I'm hoping sagas become more army defining in our new codex, along similar lines to chapter tactics, or providing force org changes ala bikes as troops, etc.
The only thing I envy that dark angels have is their flyer. Mainly because its the coolest looking marine flyer imo. Their codex has a lot of cool stuff but the lists seem really top down, which is nice cause they feel themed but it'd boring making lists... at least for me.

I like your attitude Vidar. That flier gets a lot of hate for its stats but there's no denying that it is very cool.

I hope that whatever we get, we get a way to ferry blood claws that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I actually want to field blood claws, but land raiders are expensive!

How about an open-topped longboat? Haha. That would allow assaulting on the turn they disembark.

Or how about allowing blood claws to trade their power armour for scout armour, and letting them ride into battle on a land speeder storm? Only issue there is the low transport capacity... and ws3 4+ save marines would really take a beating in cc with meq msn-wink.gif

Why would I envy another codex? DA wear dresses, BT have become Vanilla, BA are ork wannabes(everything is red & they go faster), Wh Scars are speed freaks(at least they like to hunt), Ultra Smurfs are vanilla--nothing out of the ordinary there, Grey Knights are Thousand Sons wanna bees(no wonder we don't exactly get along let alone trust each other), Orks, DE,Eldar, Necrons & Tau are all Xenos & in need of extermination & the IG need us to come save the day most times. Sisters of Battle are marine wanna bees who figure if they pray to the All Father long enough he'll remake them like their big brother & his shiny amour they keep wearing. None of them have Wolves to ride to battle, Wolf Guard to help the boss run things, Long Fangs to put the hurt on more then one target at a time, Sagas to add to our already awesome rep, or Mark of the Wulfen to howl at ANYTHING & maybe even rip it to shreds to boot. And last but not least, who else has Lone Wolves? A Marine with a bad attitude, a death wish, his choice of gear to kick butt & helps us by dying???!!??!
