Any 30k zone mortalis gamers?

Recommended Posts

hi

I was wondering how many folks here play using the zone mortalis rules and the dilemmas faced when writing up lists.

Do you play objectives or as the model count tend to be less and reaction fire rules more 'killy' the games are pretty short anyway so 'to the death'???

playing a 1k list with the limits of no vehicles and anything that cant fit through a small corridor...... well it cant.

1k at HH level is small and although if your playing attacker your dont have to have troops i'm pretty restricted when doing a WB list as i have to have 2 x HQs :(

whats the new rules? I havn't heard of it

I shouldn't say "new rules," as that is misleading.  I should say "new campaign system" as the Blood in the Void is basically something that I've wanted to do for a long time - a campaign of a single boarding action!  You breach the hull, target various ship systems, then escape again.  Brilliant.

They've also added some nice little bits for ship-specific Zone Mortalis games, like re-releasing the starship catastrophic damage table and adding ship-specific strategems.  I love starship combat, it's one of the coolest things in 40k/30k to me, so I will be playing the crap out of these scenarios.  My Zone Mortalis set is already themed to be a starship interior, I just have to add cools stuff for these new objective markers and the strategems.

The 2 HQ rule is pretty harsh for Word Bearers, since you're typically playing a smaller game to begin with.  But some of the basics of Zone Mortalis apply regardless of whether you are playing 40k or 30k.  For instance: flamers are great, infantry is required, mobility is a challenge and well-rewarded, etc.  Plus it gives me an excuse to build many squads of Breachers!  Hooray!

just treated myself to a death guard 1k list yesterday so i now have 3 x 30k army lists to play zone mortalis with.  The board is still a time consuming thing to paint though - especially as i had to sent the airbrush off to be serviced :(

SW1 I also plan to match my bases to the ZM board. The main issue right now is that forgeworld only offers 25mm bases to match... I saw some pics of a display board that had 40mm and 60mm ZM brass etch bases but when I emailed to ask, forgeworld told me they aren't planning on selling any other types of bases. Rats.

So, now I'm concocting wild schemes to cast my own bases from the ZM tiles... I just have no idea how to do it. :P I'm going to have to learn I guess.

Send me a PM and I'll give you some advice on creating similar/matching bases.

out of intrest i did hear someone mention that new ZM tiles were in the pipeline - any more confirmation on this?

Don't you get my hopes up like that! I would be all over some new ZM tiles, although I haven't heard that rumor anywhere. A man can dream though....

I'm glad you like the board sketch. As seen on my blog, I felt so happy when I figured out the floor pattern of 2" squares of vents and metal plates. Imagine how stupid I felt when I realized most of the one-foot sections were sold at FW. D'oh! wallbash.gif

But I am happy I mapped the Games Day board. I'm thinking of getting enough empty FW boards for a 4' x 8' table Then I'll make my own walls and doors to randomize however I can.

@Battle8rother: I'm looking forward to the Batrep.

my first game when i got my board ended as a draw - i got hammered by heavy volkite weapons against my small groups of thallax and even 2 of my castellax died to reaction fire!

Luckily i had myrmidons destructors moving up a corridor that managed to pop out and give cancer to about 15 marines and clawed back my defeat to a draw.  My own 'mech of the match' was a 3++ magos dominus that just kept on fighting all match to a stalemate with a paragon praetor!

Always have something to take down a contemptor because they are so popular.

Range weapons arent an issue so think of weapons like volkite calivers in support squads.

Template weapons rock!!!!

I've played on ZM boards a couple of times now, and it's insane how much it adds to the atmosphere of a game. I've asked Katie to grab me 8 tiles for my birthday in August, so we can have two tables on campaign weekends: one for planetary battles, one for boarding actions.

My main HH tactic will likely be "Take lots of Castellax."
