Colchis runes...

1. Visually there are different representations of Colchisian.

Its been described as like Phoenician but it has been depicted as like Greek - ala symbols (e.g. Horus Heresy Book 2 - Erebus), but also as like Syriac - ala 'squigglies' (e.g. Horus Heresy Book 2 - Lorgar). Its also sometimes depicted as being read top-down and othertimes as being read left-right.

2. Fluff-wise, in the novel First Heretic, it has been described that the Chaos Powers influenced a bunch of different cultures including early Cadia and Colchis. Therefore the language and writings of them ended up being similar - enough that the Colchisian Word Bearers thought the early Cadians to be speaking and writing Colchisian.

3. Fluff-wise, in the novel Know No Fear, it has been described that Chaos Daemon names etc., can be represented, and can hold 'power', in any form. In KNF specifically, Chaos Daemon names were represented by Mechanicum code characters that were input into Calth's defense network in order to subvert it.

So short answer is yes - but not always.

Colchisian runes have been used as Chaos runes but so have other runes, languages, codes, etc.

So now seeing that FW released the word bearers upgrade kits would those be suitable for doing a chaos space marine army say around the time the legions were running into the EoT? Thinking very early black legion?

I don't see why not, by that point most of the Traitor Legions (besides NL and AL) would be firmly in the grasp of Chaos and would probably have their armor desecrated (decorated ;D ) in precursor ways to what we have now. SOOOOO with it being stated that Colchis Runes came about with an influence of Chaos, I don't see why not!
