Sponsoonless Predators

Have you tried them ? What do you think of them ? How do you run them ?

I was thinking of adding a little mobile and strong armour to push the lines forward in case my advance got stalled, and after playing 2 Tri Las Preds that became expensive missing machines once they moved, I wondered about mono weapon Predators.

I quite like them. For about 100pts I get a good LoS blocking tank which can take down heavy armour. Run in pairs and they can escort centurions or anythign else that would be made more efficient with good cover, like rhinos or razorbacks.

For BA they are even better, fast tanks that together are a great Armour hunting unit...there just not really needed often with all our options.

I dont often play a WAAC list, so I take BA fast mech usually, rhinos, razorbacks and predators teamed with Baal preds can really bring the hurt but arent very OP.

TLDR; really fun, good competitive unit but not the best choice. Dropping the lassponsons frees up enough for a third Autoturret pred or nearly a nother TL laspred.

-edit- I always take the TL- lascannon, totally worth it.

Underwhelming...

100 Points for a single TL Lascannon, on an AV 13, 12, 10 chassis is nothing to shout about.

The Tri Las is decent, but then it has three times the firepower. I'd also always take HB sponsons for an Autocannon pred. Just ups its killing power for a small price increase.

I would never have considered them last edition.  Never mind the points: an entire Heavy Support slot on a single autocannon or TL lascannon feels like a dreadful waste.

In 7th, where you can always add another Detachment to get more slots, or just go Unbound, they might be worth looking at if you plan to move them around a lot. 40 points is a lot to spend on two lascannons if they're only ever going to be firing snap shots, for example, although the heavy bolters aren't so bad at half the price and more shots.

Personally, I find I don't tend to move Predators much, if at all, so I'll still be putting sponsons on them.

13 11 10, its the marine aa tanks with side 12 :/

And if you want a armoured vehicle to back up centurions why not just take a venerable dreadnought with a gun arm and a ccw?

Yeah, id say there much more worthwhile in a BA army to use the fast rhino chassis, but then you can use a Baal pred more effectivly or use IH tactics to make them more durable, but then a Ven.Dread would be a better buy.

I find where they are good is for AV13 mobile screening for troops like jumppacks or even tac squads, if you want to pay for the Lacanons and AV over a normal rhino.

Lol whoops, meant 11. :)

Got to say, if going for a sponsonless tank (and as a White Scars player concerned about the background, I tend to), I'd always go for a Sicaran instead - though evidently you only get one of those without a Master of the Forge.

The extra 35pts comes with a very significant gain in firepower, mobility and survivability, and the model is *really cool*.

I would second that :P

Another option would be to run them as one of the variants in IA 2: 2nd edition, with either the executioner turret, magna melta or flamestorm cannon. Each has a little more punch than the autocannon, and does not need to rely on the sponsons to significantly increase performance

For your purpose your better off with a las/plas razorback. Less durability but less points and your firing the whole time you advance. When you get to your line you have a short range higher volume weapon to fire and a squad to get out and support.

As to your question, only used them in low points games where I think anti tank will be harder to come by. Armor 13 and a TL LC is a but more intimidating at 750 or 1000 points.

Sponsonless Predators feel a little to underwhelming to me. I generally run a Destructor using the "autolas" configuration and I'd miss the sponsons if I dropped them. If I went for an Annihilator, then I'm paying a small fortune for a mobile Twin-linked Lascannon; without a sponson they don't seem optimal in any way, shape or form.
