Siege style army? Thoughts

Alpha Legion linebreaker formation?

Book 3 indicates an unorthodox use of Vindicators by the XXth during The (first) Battle of Paramar. They were half-loaded with shells to keep their weight light, and driven right up to point-blank range to targets before firing. It would certainly be a left-field siege army, but just think of it this way: infiltrating breacher squads. If any Legion could do it, it would be the XXth.

But seriously, you highlighted perfectly why I love the HH setting so much better than 40k: nothing is set in stone yet as the galaxy spirals out of control in the greatest civil war mankind has(or will?) ever know. You can't point at any specific Legion and say they're all good or all bad. There's a billion shades of grey that exploded into being the moment the Emperor chose to make himself known and in each one is a different story to be told.

The Heresy figures and rule books from Forge World are the biggest blank canvas that modelers will probably ever see in this setting.

I plan on making both scars and ba detachments to complement a friends fist legion hes making, together theyll form the defenders of terra.

So I fully intend on having breacher ba's, holding the line. scars artillery pieces providing surpressing fire and a whole host of units that arent usually expected from those legions

I have been experimenting with mark IV breachers using the destroyer kit for the very purpose of Alpha Legion infiltrating breachers. Currently on hold as I need all my shields for the Xth.

Cool idea - you could combine the Destroyer bodies (to emulate the 'Hardened' armour) with this shield set, which seems a bit more light-weight, and you've got yourself a rapid-response Breacher unit - which would be appropriate for pretty much any Legion: drop em' in an Anvilus / Kharybdis assault claw, or fly them in on a Storm Eagle, and they'll suit even Legion formations that are geared towards lightning assaults.

Also: an idea of how they might look: http://image.bolterandchainsword.com/uploads/gallery/album_9225/gallery_53779_9225_209575.jpg

That... That's brilliant! Why didn't I think of that?

That's exactly what I was thinking of doing. I may build one when Im next in a building mood.

Well I'm more of a hobbyist then a player, but i think a WE style siege army would be something like a lot of artillery (vindicators) to create a breach, and then quickly close combat troops to exploit the breach. Betrayal makes note that Ferrus Manus lauded the WE for their armored aggression, so it would keep in theme. Rampagers and Red Butchers can take Land Raider Phobos', and the Red Buthers can also take a Spartan. Now I'm not sure how well breachers take up with the WE rules, since their rules are close combat oriented and breachers can benefit from having two CCW's.

Unless it's been FAQ'd, the -1 Strength gifted by Inviolate Armour on the Iron Hands lets Apothecary-supported squads take their FNP saves from S8 artillery since that artillery is now S7 against them. A bow wave of Breachers and Immortals supported by phalanxes of Tacticals and Support Squads, only the most apocalyptic of weapons can remove them with surety.

Ave Ferrum.
