Legio X, 1031st Expeditionary Fleet Detachment

"Your operational parameters are these: First, approach the enemy command with terms of Compliance. Use logic and reason, and provide sound arguments and a respectful discussion to what might be our potential future honoured allies. If terms cannot be reached, ask for their unconditional surrender. If they deny again, ask again.
And then, if they still do not relent, pound them into the dust. Crush their mortal vessels with siege tanks, break them with your support batteries, ruin them with your bolters, scorch them from the face of the world with flame and plasma, and tear them limb from limb with chainsword and power axe until their blood slakes the thirst of the earth, then wrench their spines from their skulls with your bare hands.
And let no one say we did not apply reason first.
But I know you, sons, and I know myself. We are just so much better at violence."
- Ferrus Manus, Althar Nexus Compliance

The first three Iron Hands. I literally just painted up whatever models I had at home. The colour scheme is based on the illustrations in Forge World's Horus Heresy books, which I just sat and stared awe-struck at the first time I saw them. They really managed to capture something really solid and unmovable in the Iron Hands that I'd never really seen before. I tried to achieve the same finish on the models, with several different shades of black and metal, and different levels of glossiness and weathering to show different kinds of material.
Primarily, there are two types of black, one very glossy, deep black, and one more rusted, brown-ish matte black. It's hard to capture on a photo, but I really like how it looks IRL!
So what's up next?
On their way now through the fickle currents of the warp are five more Tacticals and a Shield-Captain. As far as my projects usually go, that lot should keep me busy for at least half a year. biggrin.png

Thanks guys. The Apothecary really is an Apothecary, even though he's wielding a Bolter. I just felt a Bolter to be appropriate, not realizing til way too late that it's an illegal armament per the army list. Ah well. And as for the lack of white... Tsssk. He's X Legion. White apothecary markings are for wimps. ;)

Iron Hands Fanatic - Thanks! I've thought about painting up another, less realistic and more non-metal-metal + pure black, version of an Iron Hands legionnaire as well. We'll see what happens.

While awaiting the inbound reinforcements, I painted a little (well... 100x70 cm, to be exact) acrylic painting to keep up the X Legion motivation:

Thanks guys! Glad you like it, and I'll try to live up to that "awesome things" clause :D

daemonprinceyourself - Thanks, happy you like it!

Got all my Forgeworld goodies in the mail some days ago, and first out is the Shield-Centurion, Abakaran Toras:

I'll probably revise my painting method as I'm not entirely happy how the last batch turned out. They are close to the artwork in the HH books, but they are missing that visual OOMPH that I (IMO) achieved with my Word Bearers. So I'll probably take the easy route, and more or less copy the method I used for my Word Bearers, which means lots of blending and semi-NMM.

Aaaaaaand here we go:

Bow down mortal, and realize that whatever has transpired here is to be laid upon your conscience, just as my blade is therefore to be laid upon your neck. Bow down, mortal. - Commander Toras, Legio X, to Lord-Commander Theresevi Anatalion, 29th Saturnine Fleet, prior to unsanctioned execution (ref.: Memnon Cluster campaign)

Much happier with how this painting method turned out. I eventually realized that the FW artwork looks great. In their books. In the flesh, and in more painterly art, I have always been attracted to this kind of Iron Hands art (not mine):

...and once I begun painting with this in mind, it all just came together. Will go back and repaint the first three Astartes as well, though I'm worried the layers of paint and varnish will obscure some detail. Ah well. Would be a waste not to.

Captain Juan Juarez - Thanks! I really think that one leads to the other, that's how I learnt painting artwork anyway. :D

Knight of the Raven - Thanks!

Pyromancer - Cheers, great to have you on board!

Just finished repainting one of the original three marines:

Churning the tacticals out. They are so very quick to paint after the blending madness that was the Word Bearers. Once you go black, you never go back?

Sorry for the badly lighted pictures, but pictures they are:

Lord Sondar - Thanks, I think so too! The first one is pretty similar to the Forgeworld books, but not anyway near as visually striking on actual models.

Lost Soul 18 - Thank you! That's great to hear, come to the dark side, we've got cookies. :D

Here we go with the sergeant of this merry bunch:

Plenty of good stuff here, the little snippets of fluff is really full of character, your models look nice and your artwork is really, really good. This is a thread I'll be keeping my eyes on thumbsup.gif
