Quixus
IRL shells and missiles are often color coded to differentiate the payloads. Do you do that with the misiles in the CML or on devastators as well? What would appropriate colors be for frag and krak missiles? How would you arrange them in the CML? Dam13n
I pick two colours that suit the scheme of the models as a whole. Though Red/Yellow are favourites. Ovidius Incertus
I might go with black tips for krak, as black is the AP tip color for 50 BMG rounds in US military logistics (and I think UK too). Frag is more open: for various HE-type munitions out there, you get white tips, blue tips, and sometimes yellow tips, depending on who, what and when. The US SMAW, which may be a good analogue for a frag missile, has a base metal tip with a yellow band around it. How you arrange them in a rack is up to you. I've seen images of FFAR rocket pods loaded apparently willy-nilly. averykess
I paint all the tips poking out the Cyclone and Whirlwind the same, since most of the markings are on the middle of the munition. I did find this: http://www.alternatewars.com/BBOW/Markings/MM2597_Interpreting_Ammunition_Markings.pdf Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292659-missile-color-codes/#findComment-3722622 Share on other sites

In combat you never actually see the rocket itself unless you catch a glimpse of it in flight. And the HEDP (High Explosive Dual Purpose), rocket casing has the same yellow band as the HEAA (High Explosive Anti Armor), rocket, two very different munitions. Iron Father Ferrum
And besides, the last time I checked the one thing the Codex AStartes doesn't color-code for rapid recognition is munitions. So if you want to give them different tip-markings, the colors are up to you. Quixus
Are the company colors and other color codes in the Codex? Iron Father Ferrum
They sure are. The book Insignium Astartes is about the most thorough explanation of Codex-dictated markings I've ever seen. It's actually a pretty good guide if you're a detailed-oriented person painting a codex-compliant chapter. . . which means it didn't help me very much. I notice your Krak also has a larger band of black that the red band is painted on. Awesome. Dam13n
I went for: http://i352.photobucket.com/albums/r358/MatthewDaunt/AoRDeathwingSquad3.jpg (It's an old WIP photo, but the missiles are finished in it.) reckoning
Its nice to see people step away from the same old, "Missiles and rockets must always have red tips no matter their purpose," mindset. Off Topic - Were you going for a Carl Gustav look with that conversion Heathens, or do you just not like the generic SM ML? I'm aiming for more "dumbed down" tech in my army, so many of my heavier weapons are simplified for easy maintenance, construction, and survival in the soggy hell of a trench line. Thus, Panzershreck.
