Going with Salamanders, What do i need now?

I've settled on the XVIII Legion as my pre-heresy force of choice, and im trying to decide on just what i should start off with to start building them up. I see my force as an Autonomous garrison force, perhapse the Greyon's Deep force, something that was not at Isstvan.  At the moment im planning on using a mix of Mk3 and Mk4 armor plate, but past this, im not sure what else to include.

I'm also wondering what the best way to run them would be if i want a foot slogging force.

Well their right of war could be useful, as it grants move through cover and twin-linked meltas. Vehicles also get a save against certain weapons, though this is less likely to be useful to you, as if you are going hard on the footsloggers I'd expect contemptors, who already have a save. You could consider grav-rapiers as a handy way to strip hull points and create difficult terrain - with the RoW you can exploit this as open ground but limit your opponent.

I'd consider pyroclasts too - they bring both melta and flamer, but have a 2+ save. Their speed is a problem, but they should easily out last a melta or flamer support squad, which will be equally tough to position in a foot slogging list. Salamanders have an affinity for technology - though melta and flame are fluffy, I think you can easily include hi-tech weapons and retain a flavourful list. A volkite culver in heavy support squad would fit this nicely.

I think the key things are deciding how heavily you want to follow the foot slogging theme, and how you are going to deliver the firepower you'll need with this. Personally I prefer the idea of a combined arms force for salamanders, using a decent amount of armour and wargear to reflect their smaller legion size. They'd look great with mass infantry though, and any tactics are fluffy when dealing with a legion :)

Thanks for the replys so far guys.  With the tacticals im planning on running 15+Apoth on foot untill i hit higher level points. And i guess the pyroclasts would take the position of melta/flamer support squads for now.   The main thought in wanting to go the foot slogging route is that i run a fully mechanized DE list in 40k, so i wanted to try something thats going to run differently, but i can easily see where the salamanders would benifit from some form of transport.

What're your opinions of a Sicarian vs a Predator squad?
