Idea for a new IG army....thoughts

So recently after watching alot of Spartacus I had somewhat of a brilliant moment to redo another guard army (yes I'm still calling em that) But rather than do the normal codex style armies I thought I would invent my own army with its own distinct flavour and history. So what I would be aiming for is an ancient Imperial army regiment which has history stretching back to the unification wars and the heresy, naturally they have side with the Imperium. Writing their history I'd have them with a charter from either Guilliman or the Emperor (pre-internment) which gives them certain privileges due to honour during the unification wars etc.

Rather than recruit from a single world this regiment would recruit from the Segmentum solar and her worlds and have acess to more rarer and esoteric weapons and equipment, have a steep martial honour where promotion and advancement comes from skill and merit not from noble blood etc and with the release of Imperial Knights I'd have them attached to the army as well but have the pilots selected from the regiment not a house.

Naturally as well being an ancient regiment would have some old school equipment so for that on the table top I'd be using chimeras with wheels instead of tracks and have them as an earlier variant for a similar model, I'd use the Taurox prime model but again with wheels and instead of a sloping back I'd want it level:-

That's the idea I'd be aiming for, in regards to tanks I never really liked the Leman russ model so I've considered using either a challenger or abrams tank model and doing it up. For infantry it would be the new scion models absolutely love them but would need to cut the power cables off from the hot shot las rifles (personal choice, I don't like them) I'd also convert a unit to act as praetorians for officers and have them with halberds and shields (much like the roman praetorians, and my deep love of the Custodes) these would just be for show.

So in short has anyone got anthing similar to this or know of any good sites where i can get me some tanks and who here has converted a Taurox? I think the name is going to be Legio VI Victrix (no hate for me using Legio, I could write it into my own little fluff thats what they were called for the Legions)

Just a thought. With using rarer wargear & tying in with Imperial Knights, maybe include some fluuf for close ties to a Forgeworld to help explain things along with your charter. AS for tanks, I've seen some nice conversions using the Predator turrets with Chimera hulls but it might Be pricey to do any amount of them. my 2 cents.

Not a bad idea there *stealing idea* I'll look into the Predator/Chimera idea I just never got on with the Leman russ I mean for normal 40k guard where its all bulk produced and cheap sure but for an ancient Legio I need something sleek, deadly and oh so sexy.

Everyone who started playing before the C:AM still calls 'em guard and always will do, even the Codex always says IG, except on front page and first page :D

A very good Taurox conversion is to just put wheels on 'em like http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yuaUriGwpP0/U05fGrSw1RI/AAAAAAAAA1g/na4sw0OLja0/s1600/zinge+2.jpg

or to put the TFC threads on it https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2924/14026747503_2af1909a16_b.jpg

No, I am Spartacus!

Sorry, didn't read the entire post before starting mine :P

I like your idea, you can do a lot with the Guard and this is yet another fine example of that. The TFC tracks are fantastic for a half-track I wish I had thought of that - but who on the Emperor's grey Terra has spare TFC tracks!? Aside from that there has been very little conversion work I've seen for the Taurox aside from minor bits. Maybe the model isn't popular enough yet, or is too fiddly for anything other than track replacements?

I've seen some great Chimera conversions that had the top swapped so the turret was mounted towards the middle/rear which looked great (especially in Eighth Army desert colours) but I can't find the link :(

Spare TFC tracks indeed! As rare as butterfly droppings and unicorn eyelashes.

Months back I saw a tracked toy (a kinda snowcat thingy) in a pound store and bought one with the intention of hacking the tracks off for use. Keep an eye out for cheap kids toys. Construction vehicles and the like. Just bare in mind that the plastic may be cheap: some won't take paint at all, some will require a sprayed basecoat.
