What does your army look like?

Hi folks!

It seems that there are some newer generals in the AM (including me) and I would like to post a question about your army size:

What do you have in your arsenal? How many of each tank? How many Flyers? break down your platoons and tell us what you have for troops.

The reason I ask is to get a handle on where I want to go next. Do I need 8 Leman Russ or is 5-6 enough? What about Hellhounds, Basilisks and Hydra? What is a safe amount? Same goes for all vehicles.

let us new recruits know!

Pics not necessary but welcome!

As for advice for new(er) Guard Players:

The most awesome thing about the Guard is the sheer variety of play styles. We can build an Infantry Regiment, or an Armoured one. We can field Airborne detachments, Artillery armies and everything in between. It's, simply put, really cool.

So, the first thing you need to do, as a starting Guard player, is determine what you want to play, and build your army from there on. I personally prefer a mixed force, as I love everything the Guard has to offer (with a slight preference to Abhumans and Valkyries), you might prefer the Leman Russ and Hellhounds. In which case an Armoured battalion would be more your thing.

tl;dr

"I want to Play Guard! in five (and a half) short steps!"

1) How do I want to play? Armoured, Infantry, Airborne, Artillery, Hybrid, (other)?

1.5) When in doubt, ask for advice on the Astra Militarum subforum (here!), where experienced commanders will gladly help and guide you to finding the play style that fits, and works for you.

2) Decide on a Colour scheme. Anything goes, but feel free to ask for opinions.

2.5) Optionally, you may want to write some background about your newly founded regiment. Some people like doing this to make their army feel more alive on the tabletop, and makes for some fun games when your army achieves another glorious victory.

3) Buy an IG model(s) of your choice, ideally one which you find cool/pretty/etc.. and which you want to use on the tabletop.

4) Expand your army whichever way you like, be it a cool model you desperately want to build and paint, or something to support your army on the table. Any reason is a good one.

5) Field your army on the table and achieve countless victories in the name of the Emperor (or more....wicked Gods?msn-wink.gif)!

5.5) When struggling on step 5, asking advice from the seasoned Astra Militarum commanders on this forum is a good move, these great men can aid you with advice on strategy and tactics. And who knows, one day, you may be the one advising the new Recruits! thumbsup.gif

2 meltaguns

4 flamers

1 heavy flamer

3 Lascannons

3 Autocannons

20 Penal Legionnaires (who I guess will be more basic lasgun infantry but could possibly be vets or even conscripts)

Veterans (I don't believe in using regular grunts and saying they're veterans; my vets are obviously vets with tons of conversions/kitbashing):

6 Shotgun/flak armour vets

3 grenade launcher (flak)

2 flamer (flak)

1 Sergeant with power fist

Storm Troopers or Equivalent (mixture of Kasrkin and DKoK Grenadiers)

~25 Storm Troopers or Grenadiers

4 meltaguns

2 plasmaguns

2 flamers

2 grenade launchers

1 heavy flamer

1 sergeant with pistol/CCW

2 sergeants with pistol/power sword

Vehicles

1 Hellhound

1 Hydra

2 Leman Russ Battle Tanks

1 Demolisher

1 Vanquisher (command -- has a commissar standing in the turret)

1 Storm Chimera (autocannon turret, track guards)

2 Chimeras with turret heavy flamer

4 Chimeras with multilaser turret

1 Basilisk

Other

2 Rough Rider Sergeants

4 Rough Riders with meltaguns

14 Rough Riders

5 Ratlings

Unassembled

30 Cadians who could be veterans, regular troops, or Inquisitorial acolytes depending on how I ultimately assemble them

Soon to be Purchased

25 more Scions

2 Taurox

1 Valkyrie

(i.e. the MT Storm Scions box set)

HQ :

Gaunt (x2 (why? well why not?))

CCS for my wasteland Cadian force and one my Tanith force (with the old metal tanith models) with a couple of option like astropath, medic, standard, etc.

Couple of Priest with big chainsword (I either use them as such or as eviscerator)

Primaris Psyker

Pask on a Punisher (magnetized for other option)

Elite :

15 Scions (5 CS) full magnet all option (+ 2 Commissar/Lord Commissar with bolt pistol/power sword and bolt pistol/chainsword)

Couple of ''ratling'' (sniper count-as, I don't like the subhuman fluff or look)

9 Wyrdvane

Troops :

20 Veterans (Cadian with modification) with plasma and melta

30+ Guardsmen of my Cadian wasteland force with sergeants and vox

4 Chimera

10 Tanith with some snipers (40+ in the making). I'm magnetizing weapon choice on those since I'm gonna use them as a full Veteran force

Couple of heavy weapons

Fast :

2 Tauros Venator

1 Hellhound

3 Valkyrie/Vendetta

Heavy :

5 Leman Russ (some magnet, different option of sponson too (mostly heavy bolter and plasma cannon))

1 Avenger Strike Figther

3 Wyvern count-as in the making

3 Basilisk platform

1 Medusa platform (kindof)

1 Manticore kit bash

Superheavy :

1 Baneblade

1 Knight in the making

1 Warhound Titan

I'm trying to get rid of most of those things to make way for my Tanith force. Mostly I want to make them some allies that are fluff-wise present in the book with them. So I'm gonna aim at a armoured detachment from the Hagia episode instead of random Cadian guy with chemo mask (my first army). So everything in there is (at least as a longterm project) going to change except for the tanith stuff (light vehicule and tanith troops) or scions stuff (like the valkyrie). Gonna keep my superheavy for Apoc also.

If you want to know ''what to buy'', it depends on the kind of player you are. I like to buy stuff I think looks cool BUT can do some stuff in a game. That's why I don't like my hellhound. Very awesome look, totally worthless in every game I played. I would suggest you take a theme and a regiment and work on it. If you want to expend, you can do like me and take a detachment of another regiment that is fitting fluff-wise with it. And you can't go wrong with Scions. Not only are they good, not only are they good looking, not only do they have their own codex for smaller game, but they fit fluff-wise with any form of Imperial Guard army, which is perfect. I also use mine as Inquisitorial Stormtroopers with my Inquisition force (+-1000pts which makes it goes up to 1850 if I want to).

I guess I'll add what I've got so far... Impressive lists above!

2 Psyflemen Dreadnoughts

2 Stormravens

3 Razorbacks/Rhinos

I am looking to add 2 hellhounds, some sentinels and some GK HQs.

The thing with my army is that it is constantly changing. If I find I do not use an element at all or I have an alternative that is 99% of the time better for me, I sell them to either get cash back or aquire new assets until I have a stable force of 2 basic lists (in this case mech and foot) and 1-2 spin-offs of both variants. Saves me space and helps me focus more on each individual model instead of not being able to tell which one is which (and it's easier to transport).

Some very nice collections here, I'm surprised that so many can list the exact models! I've never counted the points in my army or taken a full army shot which is probably the difference. Maybe one day I'll get all the models out for a proper count... if I've a spare morning or so :P

I see every little foot soldier as something special in my list (except those filthy heretics, but I know I made 30, so I do not need to count :D). This is why they perform so well. I can give you even more detailed info about most of them and the guy who took a power axe to the face and lived last Friday :D

I have a spreadsheet with a full list of my models - it helps when writing army lists as I will often think I have more of something (usually special weapons) that I actually have.
