Alpha legion 1500 coils list

Hi there, so this is my first post, I've been reading the forums for a long time but only just joined up :)

Ok, so basically I'm creating an Alpha legion list, 1500 to start, using coils of the hydra RoW (infiltrate), I have the core more or less chosen, but id like a bit of advice on filling the last points up. So here goes:

Preator-155

Iron Halo, Paragon Blade, power Dagger

Exodus-115

Master of Signal-85

3 tactical squads-615

15 strong, melta bombs on sgt.

head hunters-330

10, power weapon, 4 combi weapons

fire raptor-200

total-1500

the idea being the three tac squads infiltrate and draw fire, using Fotl to whittle down enemy troops with the preator and MoS to support, head hunters are placed to counter any specific threats, preferably in power armour. ill probably run them with combi meltas to counter and termies/ vehicles. Exodus is on anti apothecary duty, also taking out any targets of opportunity, while the fire raptor is anti air/vehicle, and also because its a bargain at 200 points :)

Welcome to the B&C, and welcome to the HH!

First thing that jumps out at me is that you have 3 HQ's.  Not only is this a lot of points spent in HQ's for 1500, it's an illegal number of HQ's.  You don't get the 3rd HQ and 4th elite slots from the AoD FOC until 1750 points.

Second thing is, why Coils of the Hydra?  You are taking on several burdens and limitations (required to bring a Praetor, 3 compulsory troops, infantry must infiltrate) for... -1 to enemy reserves and +1 to the roll to go first?

Third, lack of Vexillas in your tactical blobs.  It provides a very important reroll that can help keep your troops in the fight.  Without it, the lack of ATSKNF of Legionaires means you could get swept in combat or run off the table edge much more easily than you think.

Fourth is a lack of anti-tank.  The Fire Raptor, lacking reaper batteries, will struggle to kill Predators even with side armor shots.  Sicarans will laugh off the Avenger bolt cannon from all angles as you tickle them to death, as well as the Tempest rockets.  A Spartan will not even notice that it's there.  On top of this, headhunters cannot take combi-weapons.  They can take combibolters.  Even if they could take combimeltas, four of them is vastly insufficient for the job at hand.  Especially considering that many vehicles in 30k can take armoured ceramite, allowing them to ignore the Melta USR.

1500 points is really kind of entry-level for the HH, it's only just enough points to really get together all the elements you need without any extra points to really start getting into the flavor and customization of the setting.  I think you should either push towards 2k and add some real anti-tank if you want to keep the concept (and probably drop the Master of Signal, the Praetor and Exodus at 2k is really more than enough), or... drop the Praetor, the RoW, one of the tactical squads, push your remaining two tactical squads up to 20 marines each, and work out some real anti-vehicle for the ~250 points you've opened up.

Okay, ive taken your advice on board, and I agree the RoW is very restrictive at this points level. So ive made a few changes to the list, and come up with the following:

Praetor-155

IH, PB, power dagger

Exodus-115

Head Hunters-325

3 combi weapons, power weapon

rapier laser destroyer battery-165

3

2 tac squads-530

20, vexillia, melta bombs

fire raptor-210

autocannon battery

Total-1500

Do you think this list will be a bit more competitive? still not a fantastic amount of anti armour, but how much will I be facing at 1500 anyway...

Sorry just saw the part about combi weapons-scratch that and add artificer armour and melta bombs to the squad instead!

On the subject of armor at 1500 points, I usually run 4 AV 13 vehicles. I feel like your Anti Armor is still a bit inadequate because most of it comes in the form of your rapier carriers. The rapiers lack mobility and only have a 36" range. A lot of things you'll be wanting to pop will be able to easily out maneuver the rapiers. They are also a little fragile compared to a Contemptor Mortis or Predator. I understand that if you are wanting to be fluffy, a bunch of tanks for anti armor is a little off-putting. So, I would suggest looking at Contemptor Mortis with TLLC since its survivable and can double as Anti Air, and maybe keep a rapier or two.

Hi all. Another pre-heresy AL-er here. Although I'm in the process of paiting and buying my army I have proxied the following list and done quiet well. Thought I would throw in my list to this debate. This is a little below the points value but I would add some termies and/or a spartan with the extra points.

This is my lists

Legion Centurion [50]

-Master of signal [35]

-Refractor field [10]

Legion tactcials [150]

-Power sword [10]

-Legion Vexilila [10]

-Artificer armour [10]

Legion tactcials [150]

-Power sword [10]

-Legion Vexilila [10]

-Artificer armour [10]

Legion heavy support [135]

-missle launchers x5 [25]

-Flak missles [50]

Apothecary detatchment (2 models) [90]

-Artificer armour [20]

-Power Sword [20]

Contemptor mortis dreadnought [175]

-extra armour [10]

-Havoc launcher [15]

-Two Kheres Assault cannons [25]

Take what you will from this but having the heavies and the mortis both able to hurts Air and armour has saved my bacon and the havoc launchers is a great secondary blob clearer after FOTL or the master of signals blast.

What I am basically saying is have 2 things that do something well. E.g 2 AA, 2 anti armour, a bunch of anti blob as well as some generic troops.

Always have a back up, as that lucky shot from a dirt cheap unit can ruin your whole day otherwise.

I am also open to suggestions for improvements and/or the extra 500 points.

Hope this helps. If not sorry for hijaking

Hydra Dominatus

Another useful and inexpensive source for mobile anti armor could be a pair of Javelin attack speeders. Their mobility combined with the ability to mount twin linked cyclone missiles/Lascannons and hunter killer missiles with a jink save means you're able to get them positioned to strike pretty easily against side armor while keeping them around for at least a turn or two.

In my opinion they are some of the most undercoated units in our army list. (plus they are beautiful models)
