Rommel44
Hey mates. Posting this question on behalf of a friend of mind who I finally convinced to play Warhammer 40k, and after some thought he is loving the idea of a Drop Pod Space Wolf Army. I told him that it was a good choice, as Space Wolves by far can make the most effective Drop Pod Army out there in my opinion, and they benefit from having there Grey Hunters be the most flexible and most effective Tac Squad in the game with all the special rules they currently enjoy. Granted they are getting a new book here soon enough, however I really don't expect them to change too much in that re-guard, however I am asking this question as I have really not seen a Drop Pod Army in some time. Are they still very effective in this edition? And if anyone plays any Drop Pod Armies and advice and tactical knowledge needed would be appreciated. Kasper_Hawser
Drop pod wolves are still very effective on all counts, except against the accursed interceptor heavy Tau army. As in everything else in SW codex though , positioning and support is key. U dont send them one by one against enemy gun lines without support, as they cannot charge right after dropping. The drop pod itself can act as blocking or cover save for your troops. As always, everything is location, location, location. Rift Blade
To help with getting your Pods with your troops where you want them in the numbers you need them, just remember that LF's can take a pod but do not have to start the game in it. It can be deployed empty. So say you have 3 pods of troops & 2 LF packs for 5 pods total, you deploy your choice of 3 pods(the troops) on turn 1 & then the other 2 as they come available. Or switch it up if you need depending on the game. My 2 cents. Squark
I don't reccomend taking Long Fangs in Drop Pod armies unless you've also allied in a Guard blob or something to give them some screening (Or they're actually in the pod. But that requires Logan). They just don't last long enough against the current metagame's gunline armies. Rune Priest Jbickb
Also remember pods taken by troops have objective secured. I love pods but they rarely go unsupported in my lists. I usually use a predator and some long fangs as support and occasionally some land speeders. Dreadnoughts are also fun to pod and greyhunters do an excellent job. Also tda combimelta or combiplasma wolf guard make a great alpha strike that usually survive to get into combat. Just some fun thoughts. Point him are way if he decides to jump into the game we slays welcome a new brother Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292805-pure-drop-pod-lists-in-7th/#findComment-3726116 Share on other sites
thepowerofwar
Pod also got a boost in this ed due to deep striking vehicles counting as moving at combat speed instead of cruising. So now they can be a missile platform when they drop S5 large blasts the turn they land. Before they could only snap fire the turn they landed so the missiles were kind of a waste. Sohail187
Also with IA2, you can pay additional points for your pods not to scatter. So if you have a death melta squad of WG pay like 20-30 points extra and that pod does not scatter at all! logun
pod lists for me haven't changed much except maybe in the HQ department. the wolf preist and wolf lord have stepped in for the 'must take' runepreist. Valerian
Sohail, what is the name of the upgrade? I don't recall seeing that, and will look it up later when I get home from work. Do you have a page number handy? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292805-pure-drop-pod-lists-in-7th/#findComment-3727113 Share on other sites
elithren
Not quite as good as it sounds. Page 245, isstvan V dropsite massacre legacy of glory. You can take 1 legacy of glory per 1k points and only 1 of each type can be taken. So for 1k points list and over, you can have a single drop pod not scatter. DanPesci
It may be only one drop pod.... but one pod with few meltas landing exactly where it wants is really good (personal view) or one pod full of combi flamers, or combi plasma....just makes your squd kitted out for one purpose that much more deadly at carrying out their purpose....sure..plasma isnt as much of an issue due to its range, but melta and flamers being able to basically be placed....woop woop Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292805-pure-drop-pod-lists-in-7th/#findComment-3728058 Share on other sites

CatSmasher
If you can drop them behind some cover with an accurate DP, you can shoot your meltas and then go to ground in the return shooting phase if you so choose. Keeps the suicide unit around for an extra turn perhaps. What book has this again? Sohail187
The possibilities with this book are endless they really are!!!!!! Or keep a landspeeder with double heavy flamer in reserves... give it the no scatter upgrade flame the :cuss out of any gun line! Does blast not generally ignore cover anyway (as long as the blast lands inside the cover?) or have they changed that/i jsut been playing it totally wrong hah Yes Dan, You can have predators that have the big plasma cannon which is 3 blast template, you can have magma cannon which is large blast melta as well :p since you clearly dont have IA V2.... imagine a land speeder that can zoom ........ -_- or a landspeeder with outflank and 5 str 8 shots... so many fun tools you can use!! and some really work well with the space wolves play style. I model i use in nearly every army list is the damochles command rhino... 75 points and you can have x1 orbital bombardment and you get +1 or -1 to your reserve rolls... on top of that any units arriving from deepstrike never scatter if they land with in 12 inches..good tool if you go reserve heavy make sure your reserves arrive. skeletoro
that zooming land speeder always seemed odd to me. You have to forgo shooting to do it - would this ever be a worthwhile trade? Seems dubious to me..? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292805-pure-drop-pod-lists-in-7th/#findComment-3731453 Share on other sites
Sohail187
I guess its one of those things..... you sacrifice 1 turn of shooting to get into a awsome place for 2nd turn or something like that :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292805-pure-drop-pod-lists-in-7th/#findComment-3731793 Share on other sites
