Pre-heresy World Eaters

Recommended Posts

Hello All

After much debate I have finally started a presheresy legion. I spent some time deciding which legion, I nearly went imperial fists (maybe i will still in the future) but after reading betrayer and seeing the complexity and tragedy of the 12th legion i could resist. In addition from a purely painting point of view i have never in 20 years of painting really had a white army and as a man who paints more than he plays that was mportant.

This was my first test, he was missing some transfers as i didnt have them at the time. But i was fairly happy with the results.

I love mark 3 armour even if World eaters are sometimes more associated with mark 4, so i resolved to have a mixture of both.

With the test now done I got the others done in a batch.

Tactical squad 1

I was failry happy with these to but thought i should have a go at some mark 4, i am not a fan of the mark 4 chest deisgn as i think the crossed piping gets in the way so i started an assualt squad ( who dont have it). I wanted them to appear to be jumping off stuff, which was hmmmm...semi successfull. I also thought once they were done that they should all have chainaxes. But given the fluff and the fact I sort of see my World eaters as earlier heresy/crusade or even loyalist thats ok as it does say that Angron and his legion developed chainaxes slightly further down the line, so a some chainswords might be ok.

Next (I have been saving this stuff up for a few months and always meaning to get to posting!) I thought I would test out a vehicle. I started with a contemptor, which must but a top candidate to get a plastic kit one day ? Not because the model is bad, its very nice, I just wonder how mnay more GW/Forgeworld could sell. Still enough of my rambling...

contemptor No arms

He is fairly armless as I magnatised the arms for flexibilty, it took me nearly as long to decide the best way of doing this as building the rest of the model. He is below with some kheres ( poor photo sorry)

Finally i went for a rhino

I am really happy with this, it was quite quick to do also. I have few shots of some other vehicles i will try and get up later today.

The vindicator was a lovely model to paint, as with most newer forgeworld models the quality was right up there. i only had to bend a few pieces in warm water and it went together nicely.

I finished the sicaran last week also.

I am loving painting the tanks. Next up though a few more boots on the ground.

Good work and welcome to the XII Legion.

That Sicaran is my absolute favorite. I saved the photo for reference when my own two Sicarans get to me.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you are - half way done with my own World Eaters force of 3000 points. I use a variation of the FW recommended painting guide, with a few tweaks of my own (mainly, I use a much deeper blue and a lot of blood smears).

Get your assault marines some chainaxes!

As for armor marks, you can use whatever you want. All of the Legions had access to marks II-V (the last coming into use as the Horus Heresy dragged on and supply chains became strained). The World Eaters are noted for using the Sarum Pattern helmet (very similar to the classic space marine "rage helm"). Personally, I gave my heavy support squad and some of the tactical squads mark II armor, to represent veterans of many campaigns, some of whom even date from the War Hound times with the old heraldry still adoring their armor. For my assault squad, I gave them a mixture of marks IV and V, to represent attrition taking its toll.

I have to ask - do you have any Terminators waiting to be painted? :D I use both Tartaros and Cataphractii.

Check out the link in my signature.

Guys thanks for the comments really appreciated. I will try and get some more pics up tomorrow of some more infantry ( with chainaxes! !) Terminators are near the top of list to get in, I cant decide between the two types but I am leaning towards catophrachi. Will probably need a land raider or spartan to put them in .......

So some more infantry below, played around with the lighting and my camera phone to se if i could get some better results, some mixed results were the results. I may have to get my brother with his posh digital camera over.

About right

I might build a crude light box to see if that helps.

Also took a few quick snap shots of some assault marines with some of the new heads on

Some WIP of my landraider, its needs lots of those little jobs doing still, OSL on the lights, mud adding, some soot work with weathering powders etc etc.....it also needs some terminators to go in it....

Hi

There are two methods one for infantry and one for vehicles, but they start the same. For infantry models they get a basecoat of Vallejo grey primer, then really dark crevices, undersides etc are airbrushed vallejo model air dark sea grey. Then lower parts of armour plates are given a light coat of model air usaf medium grey. Then finally model air white in two or three light passes from an above and at about 45 degrees. Though sometimes afterwards I cheat this and go back and apply a bit more to chest plate centres etc or prominant areas, as long as some medium grey is still showing at the edges. Now if its infantry I wash the model in medium grey oil paint wash. I tend to do a batches of 5 guys so by the time i am happy with guy 5 guy 1 has started to dry out and settle enough to see wheres its going dry ( though it won't dry in reality for hours ) I now taken some thinner and use this to clean up areas near the centre of plates, so knees, helmets, centre of chest etc. This takes it back to white. I then let it completely dry. I then repeat the process with dark brown oil paints again cleaning up the prominant areas, finally I use gw warpfiend grey and adeptus mechaniucum grey to to streak the damage and cuts. I may use a very limited ammount of gw vx88 brown mixed with lamian medium to wash certain crevices. The feet get some fw weathering powders on whuch get some ak interactive pigment fixer on and done. I found its best in batches as there is bit of drying time. There is a bit of brush work on the helmets with warpfiend grey to tidy up and blend out, usually blended into uthlan grey of the original vallejo model air white.

Hope that helps.
