Joeyray
Greetings Brethren, Flicking through Know no Fear and I came upon Thiel and the void combat upon the starship hulls: "The low gravity amplifies their strength. One firm step becomes a bound of ten metres. The practical takes a second to master, despite the hours of theoretical and drill. It is too easy to overstep, to push too hard, to fly too far. Across the wider gulfs, the ravines of the port-side cooling vents and the immense canyons of the interdeck crenellations, members of the kill squad switch to quick burns of their void-harnesses, clearing the divides of adamantium and steel chasms." "They hard-burn with their void-harnesses, following the wide canyon of a brightly lit heat exchange channel, and passing under the stark shadow of a power coupling the size of a suspension bridge. Their tiny black shadows chase them along the hull." Credit to Abnett for his work setting the scene, I always think of Moonraker's Space Laser Battle for inspiration, Now I sadly don't own any of the FW HH series but is their any expansion on the look of what a void harness would look like? Lucien Eilam
I just pictured them using jump packs in that scene, perhaps specially configured for micro-gravity and minimal atmosphere. Why invent something new when jump packs are designed for exactly that job? helterskelter
Have you ever read The V.C.s? mr abnett wrote the more recent storyline in 2000ad, space bourne alien killers! When i read that scene they are who i think of Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292846-marine-void-harness/#findComment-3726628 Share on other sites
GrandMagnus
I thought the regular backpacks had those ventilation devices (throne, why cant I remember the technical word) precisely to help moving the marines in void warfare. Other than that I suppose jump packs. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292846-marine-void-harness/#findComment-3726631 Share on other sites

Durfast Spiritwolf
In the original fluff, power units did include thrusters - that's why we have what are exhaust pipes on the sides at the top. This is most obvious on the Mk IV power unit. That aside, I think jump packs would be over egging the pudding, as does it seems DA. So the idea of a less powerful and bulky void harness makes a lot of sense to me :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292846-marine-void-harness/#findComment-3726649 Share on other sites
SW1
The chaos style back packs with the vents which are further out are meant to be the void harness types. Xin Ceithan
As pointed out above I remember that the backpack exhaust ports were supposed to aid in low / zero g maneuvering, at least on some Armour marks. For current fluff, I will check on the HH books once I 'm home Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292846-marine-void-harness/#findComment-3726731 Share on other sites
Lucien Eilam
They've retconned the backpacks multiple times. Originally they were "stabilising jets". Then they became exhausts, and the Chaos backpacks had them on stalks because they only had access to lower quality power plants in the Eye of Terror which generated more radiation/heat. Then Betrayal has a Death Guard Marine already with a Chaos-style backpack where they're jets again AND generate more radiation/heat.
