Your preferred Artillery

Recommended Posts

Now we all know (or at least heard) that the new Wyvern is pretty decent for its points *cough*

So decent, that I hardly see any more Artillery going on, despite most of them being quite decent.

The Manticore is fairly deadly to hordes and can glance vehicles pretty darn well and is the death of any parking lot. With Prescience those things can become even deadlier. Sure, they can not fire directly, thus it has a minimal range of 24" which can be an issue on 1 of 3 deployments, but even then you can just put it into a corner and have it fire.

Then there is the Basilisk, death incarnate to transports and anything that is MEQ and less. They have no range limit though anything less that 36" has to be fired indirectly. With Prescience 2 of these bad boys squadronned can be a pain to stacked armour and infantry and they can even glance av13 and av14 to death. While they have 1 less Strength on their weapon, they are more consistent and reliable.

So, what your take on our big guns? Worth it at all? I, for my part, am eying the 'lisks to add some Oomph! to my infantry dakka list.

I use wyvern. I proxie a deathstrike for a laugh now and then.

Tried manticores but too unreliable as you seem to buying a 4 x 3 big blast laucher but I never ever rolled for 3 in one shot. Plus the armies I face never stay away long enough. Plus ap4 is not good enough.

Badilisk should be apoc with that range. Just no good for points imo. Better off with forgeworld or russ' s.

I like Basilisk Platform. They are dirt cheap for what they do ! Also, Wyvern are good but I'm very unlucky with them. When you roll scatter 11'' and scatter 12'' on your first barrage, which means eveyrthing else will touch nothing, you know that game is not gonna end well lol

Griffons. Damn you GW I hope you're reading this! :P

The Manticore is fun, but not quite as good now (still potent though). Wyverns are yet to be added to my collection but we all know they're a fantastic infantry killer for the price. For my preferred and all time favourite it is the Bassie. Lobbing shells of doom as far as the eye can see is the epitome of Guard artillery. Point and shoot then watch your problems fly away (in lots of tiny chunks)

The range can be a bit of an issue, but all good artillery armies have a solid infantry core to hold the enemy back right?

I haven't actually got any artillery yet, but if I did buy some it'd likely be the Wyvern, first. I've been running a 3x Mortar HWT, and it's just inferior in every single way to what a Wyvern could be for an additional 5pts.

That aside, I'd probably get a Basilisk, though with a few modifications as the existing model seems a bit dated. That or a Deathstrike for giggles.

My poor mortars :( They're still useful though and I will be reminding people of this when the next codex inevitably nerfs the Wyvern somehow :P

The Bassie is the quintessential artillery piece so everyone should have one (ideally two), it's a shame that some of the other pieces were dropped from the current codex as they gave us plenty of cool options.

Not in 6th and as far as I'm aware that hasn't changed in 7th. I'm at work though so someone else will have to check the rule book :P I made a primer on the artillery rules for 6th here, I'll see if I can find the time to update it for 7th if required :)

("Barrage" Pg. 450 - 451, electronic edition)

Inside min range you need LineOfSight (and subtract BS from scatter roll), outside min range it can be indirect but will scatter the full 2D6.

Hits against vehicles are always resolved against side armour and when seeing if a model gets a cover save, you must take it from teh centre of the blast and not the firer.

Multiple barrage are cool, you roll to place the first shot, and then only roll the scatter dice (not 2d6) and place the next blast marker touching the first. A HIT lets you place it anywhere, so a more numerous cheaper blast marker could be used to help a larger more expensive one land better, with a bit of luck.

Pretty tasty rules, they've put the hurt on my Marines a few times!
