Tanith-my chance at a dream army

Recommended Posts

Hail, brothers!

I've recently come into a large number of Victoria Miniatures border world rangers, which gives me a chance to start my dream army, the Tanith 1st.

These guys are the whole reason I started warhammer a decade ago. Yes, I've used other army's. Night Lords, Space Wolves,Cadians and far,far too many DIY space Marine chapters. But the tanith were always there, calling to me.

And now, I've got the chance to collect them.

Now, enough of that.

Obviously, the line ghosts are going to be represented with veterans with forward sentries, demolitions (tube charges!) and a mixture of flamers and meltaguns.

I'll use ratlings for snipers and company command squads for orders.

I will be taking tanks, but they'll either be Narmenian or Pardus armoured to fit in with the theme.

I've got two problems, namely Gaunt himself and the scout cadre.

The way I see it, I could either use commissar yarrick or a company commander with camo gear, blade of conquest, bolt pistol and the deathmask of ollanus the pious.

Any advice between the two?

And then the scout cadre. Now, my gaming group is being very accommodating and have said I can use any unit, from any codex to represent them, and by extension, the might Mkoll himself.

So, any recommendations for the two?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome back to the Guard, this is a great army idea I'm very keen to see your models :) I'm not especially familiar with the books, but I think either character could represent him well enough from his background so it depends on how accurate you want to be (Commissar bit in particular?) and how effective it may be on the table top. I think I might be leaning towards Yarrick in this case, as even tooled up a Company Commander isn't going to be too great at CC so could be an expensive flop which would do no justice to Gaunt...

Greetings ! I play Tanith myself, doing exactly as you said ! I modeled big-ass sniper to even incorportate ''heavy sniper'' (count-as lascannon) in my veteran teams.

I have the model for Gaunt, and I either play him as Lord Commissar with the blade relic (it's ALMOST the same as his old rule in 4th ed), or Yarrick. Yarrick is a little bit too strong for Gaunt and has some special rules not fitting (Preferred Enemy Orks), but still, at least he's badass.

You could try to convince your gaming group to re-integrate Marbo in the codex as Mkoll. That's my plan actually. As far as the scout goes, I have no idea. I thought about using some guard models as count-as of something not IG if your gaming group is okay with count-as (for example SM Scout with CCW, etc.).

I personnally have both the real metal Tanith models for my command squad and the victoria miniatures for the veterans. Works great. I also play artillery platform and some tanks as Pardus 8th. I'm also gonna try and do an Inquisitor Lilith for the sake of allying with the Inquisition as a have a +-2000pts of Inquisition/Scions too.

Have fun ! It's great to see another fething Tanith around here. For Tanith ! For the Emperor !

EDIT :

If you don't know the old rule of Gaunt, it was along those lines :

Colonel Commissar Gaunt
75 pts
WS 5
BS 4
S 3
T 3
W 3
I 4
A 3
LD 10
5+

Wargear :
Sword of Heironymo (+1 Str, MasterCrafted, Power Sword)
Bolt Pistol
Camo Cloak
Frag and Krak Grenades

Special Rules :
Frontliner : Must move and charge if possible any assault within 12'' of him. All IG units of this CC gains +1A.
Fearless
Leader : Cannot carry a 'Summary Execution' but will still carry out 'It's For Your Own Good'. Any IG within 12'' of him may use his LD for Morale or Pinning test.

The problem with Yarrick is twofold-he doesn't come with a camo cloak and he he comes with summary execution. Gaunt has never killed a ghost, so is really rather not kill one of my own.

@david ravel: I Loved those old rules, I really did. The tanith would be amazing if I could use the old doctrine system from there, but my group is current codex only, so no Marbo either.

The problem with space marine scouts is that they've got 4's in all the wrong places. The scouts are only bs3,so they'd be worse than my line infantry where they should be at least as good.

Telion would make a pretty good larkin though!

Space Wolf Scouts then.

Though they then don't have a way to portray any of the named caracters, as Wolfguard and so on would be to powerfull I think.

Edit: Just had a thought. What about Craftworld Eldar. There are Rangers/Pathfinders and Scorpions.

Who can't take camo cloaks. :(

You see my dilemma?

And pathfinders are snipers, really.

Ideally, for the scouts I'm looking for a short ranged shooting unit who can hold their own-by guard standards, anyway-and have access to some form of 'Stealth'.

I don’t think there will be a unit that matches all the criteria, so it might be a case of settling for the closes match either rules wise or flavour wise.

All I can think off

Tau: Kroot, Pathfinders, Stealth suits

Eldar: Rangers, Scorpions, Guardians with a warlock for the Psychic power that gives stealth

Dark Eldar: Mandrakes

SM/SW/DA/BA: Scouts

Veterans can have Shotguns.

Scorpions is a good tradeof. Cypher not a bad idea. I mean Mkoll does kill Dreadnought with exploding lasgun and is able to hunt a kill a Dark Eldar Mandrake assassin.

For Yarrick he is indeed not fearless, my bad. Still, with Priest avalaible at 25 pts (Ayatani), you don't have a reason to now have fearless in the squad where he is. At the very least he is still LD 10 with the Warlord Traits that helps LD.

Hmm, I didn't think about including a priest for zweil. That sounds like a really good idea. Yarrick and a priest sound pretty good to me.

I think I'll play test the scorpions and mandrakes, if not I'll go for cypher with some veterans.

Why not just kit out the CCS with a blade of conquest (model it after Heironimo's Sword). That way he can toss out orders, take camo pants (he and this retinue) and won't execute anyone. Sure, he won't be a Commissar in game, but I never got that impression from Gaunt anyway. I think a melee centric Company Commander fits the bill a bit better. Don't forget, he's a Colonel-Commissar, so a CCS might fit him just as well in the end.

Well, at the moment I'm thinking of using cypher as Mkoll and for the scouts a squad of veterans with forward sentries, demolitions and either flamers or grenade launchers.

Which means that gaunt really needs to be yarrick in order to not have a ld8 warlord with cypher's special rules!

Mind you, I'm still open to suggestions. If anyone's got any other ideas for Mkoll/Mkvenner and the scouts, I'd love to hear them, especially as it would open the company commander up for gaunt without cypher.
